Sony was AMD's biggest customer in 2022, accounting for a whopping 16% of the semiconductor-producing company's revenue, perhaps best known in the video game space for its graphics cards. Both Sony and Microsoft use AMD hardware in their current-gen consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S.
AMD sold Sony some $3.776 billion worth of chips for PS5 consoles in 2022, according to a filing with the SEC (thanks Tom's Hardware). At the start of January, Sony revealed it had sold more than 30 million PS5 units and that the supply situation that had plagued the platform since its launch had apparently been resolved, alongside an aggressive marketing push.
It will be interesting to see what these numbers look like this time next year, now that the PS5 is more readily available. Given what you now know, how many PS5s do you think Sony will sell this year? Hit us with your best shot in the comments section below.

100 million units 🤫
As much as they are able to produce. That' logical.
Another reason consoles are important....
If supplies are opening up, maybe they can crank out a mid-cycle upgrade. I got my PS5 in February 2021, so I’m willing to jump up to a PS5 Pro and put my old one in the spare room for the kids.
35 million consoles this year is my guess
@8bit4Life Don't hold your breath for a PS5 Pro. AMD simply cannot provide an SoC that offers substantial performance gains at a reasonable price anytime soon. This generation is shaping up to be very different from the last one.
Of course, realistically I agree with you.
But I would love a PS5 that doesn’t need to choose between Performance and Ray Tracing modes.
A PS5 Pro would be a great intermediary between now and PS6.
@8bit4Life If we do get a PS5 Pro, I just don't see it releasing until 2024 at the earliest.
Especially thanks to the delay in PS5 availability the past few years thanks to the pandemic and chip shortage.
