Last week, SEGA announced Sonic Origins Plus, an expanded and improved version of its mascot's retro compilation. Launching in June, the package's big new addition is a dozen Game Gear games — all the ones related to the blue blur — as well making Amy a playable character in the Mega Drive titles. At first pass, it sounds like a much better package, but fans aren't too pleased.
To recap, these are all the Game Gear Sonic titles included with Sonic Origins Plus:
- Sonic the Hedgehog
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Sonic Chaos
- Sonic the Hedgehog: Triple Trouble
- Sonic Labyrinth
- Sonic Blast
- Sonic Drift
- Sonic Drift 2
- Sonic 2 in 1
- Tails Adventure
- Tails' Skypatrol
- Sonic Spinball
Now, the problem this time around is with these extra games. SEGA has elected to include the Game Gear versions of all the above, but the trouble is that the emulated software ends up zoomed in and cramped, making the games tougher to play. Many of the listed games are also available on Master System, where they look and play much better thanks to a fuller picture. Here's an example of the difference:
Unfortunately, the Master System versions are not the ones included with Sonic Origins Plus. It's a choice that's left Sonic fans frustrated. After the initial release of Sonic Origins failed to impress with emulation issues and a general lack of content, this Plus upgrade feels a little like one step forward, one step back.
What do you think? Is Sonic Origins Plus making a big blunder, or are you just glad the 8-bit games are included at all? Discuss in the comments section below.

The Game Gear games are just a bonus anyway. This isn’t something to get mad over.
It's not ideal but I'm not too bothered by it. At least they are playable.
Most of these were only purchasable on the 3ds which has now closed the eShop, so great they are being made available again.
I also understood that for most games the gamegear version was considered better? Could be wrong though.
Finally - and it's probably a matter of money/time. Only a handful were on Master system, so then you end up with two sets of emulation to develop. Would be nice to have the full set but this is better than nothing
@Alexface I know the Game Gear had more colours and stereo audio, while the Master System only had mono audio.
And these are emulated bonuses.
In an ideal world, maybe Creative Araya would be hired to remake these games in 16:9.
My ideal for Sonic Origins would be:
This is a non-issue.
I grew up on the Game Gear versions and am happy to see them included. The only thing missing for me is the Genesis version of Sonic Spinball but honestly, I could play my original Genesis copy, my PS2 Mega Collection Plus version, or my Retro Pi version. Not a huge setback as I have access too it.
What was the saying a while back if someone complained about the difficulty of a game... Git Good? — I'll never understand the need to destroy spelling on purposes on the internet.
i just want an emulated version of Knuckles Chaotix for ps4/ps5.
Since the early days of Sega doing any kinds of compilations when in comes to including any 8-bit Sonic games the have to my knowledge only ever done the Game Gear versions because there are all on that system so having them all display at the same resolution makes sense. Only 4 of the games listed were made natively for the Master System and one Sonic Blast was ported directedly from the Game Gear version in Brazil and as a result just displays a stretched full screen image not taking advantage of the higher resolution anyway.
@Jireland92 you literally have to pay money to get access to them, it's not a "bonus" by any definition.
@Jireland92 It's the bulk of the new content hardly a bonus for $10.
And Sega won't replace them with the MS versions. Going by their past behaviour with this sort of thing at least!
But luckily Sega's predictability (regarding Sonic Mania Plus) allowed me to hold out on buying Sonic Origins digitally so now I can happily plonk down the cash for this updated and content-rich physical edition!
I mean, I definitely would of liked to have the Master System versions of all of the games, but Sonic 1 and Chaos are pretty well optimized for Game Gear, Mean Bean Machine doesn't increase the actual playfield, Sonic Blast is Sonic Blast, and while Sonic 2 is hindered, it's not impossible to play. I'm just glad these are now actually available on modern consoles, plus the fact that Amy is the main show, and you get the other DLC included, I can't really complain at all
People are getting mad at Sega for….including exactly what they said they were including? It’s not like they were ambiguous about it, it’s very clear that they’re the Game Gear versions. If you don’t want it, don’t buy it. Ay yi yi.
I said this from the start that there are bad smh, they could have easily put the megadrive/Saturn versions and add the GBA games but they took the cheap easy way out 😤
It would have been a easy buy for me for that but I'm going to wait till this hits plus extra instead, I know it won't take long 👍🙂
@Hydra_Spectre that would be great but we all know sega will never do this, this list would be the bare minimum at least

Love the way people here are just perfectly ok with the inferior product but you know you do you.
@awaltzforvenus I won't be buying them I can play them for free on my Phone and Tablet thanks.
Hot garbage, they clearly put in the least amount of effort
The GameGear had a lot more Sonic titles, so it makes sense to do a collection of games on there as opposed to the Master System. Plus, Master System ports of the Genesis titles were basically just downgrades of those games, while the GameGear games had some purpose as handheld games.
If you really want to play the Master System games that badly, just download them on an emulator or go for a collection that included them. Would I have liked to have had Master System games included? Sure, but I would much rather have the full GameGear collection. As a Sega fan, I consider this whole thing a total non-issue.
The Master System version of Sonic 2 is better. I had the Game Gear version at launch, and it's not great, mimimal was done to alter the game design for the small screen except for zooming in way too far to adapt the resolution. That first boss as a result, is frustrating. Game Gear Sonic one is a much better effort, more background graphics and a new Sonic sprite with the game properly adapted to the Game Gear.
@Hydra_Spectre I mean, this would be epic.
I'd love a series of sonic collections like they did on GameCube.
So origins being 8 and 16 bit (need to add sonic spinball) and 32 bit (sonic 3d, R and fighters)
Then an advance era (Advance 1-3 and battle, throw in rush and rush adventure for good luck)
Then finally a Dreamcast/ GameCube era (SA 1&2, heroes, shadow and maybe even shuffle for fun)
Sonic 2 first boss and some leaps of faith in later levels are present in the Game Gear version but I don't care that much to be honest. I really love that some of my favourite games are released again. It would be great if they expanded Sonic Origins more by adding the Master System ports, the Mega Drive versions of Spinball and 3D and the Knucles game for 32X though.
I think that just like the original release, this is a greedy company making a quick buck without respecting the source material.
They literally don't want to fund anything and want to sell it for premium price.
Can't be bothered with paying royalties for the original music, can't be bothered to give devs time, gouge with made up dlc, port quick and cheap GG games.
Amy and knuckles in Sonic CD is the only good thing about this. They couldn't even be bothered to add Mighty and Ray that are already done.
You know what i did? I bought Sonic Jam for my Saturn. Much better. Feels just right.
Well that's unfortunate news, hope they swap over to the Master System versions.
