Aliens: Dark Descent is a squad-based, real-time tactical action game set in the iconic Alien universe, and it's coming to PS5 and PS4 on 20th June. We got our best look yet at the game in action courtesy of IGN's First preview coverage.
Dark Descent puts us in mind of XCOM but removes the illusion of safety offered by that game's turn-based combat; the xenomorphs we see here are certainly not interested in patiently waiting for their chance to move. The sound design is near pitch-perfect, as is the tension, and we will be watching this one with great interest as the release draws near.

When are we getting an Alien Isolation sequel? That was incredible.
Yeah I'll second that. Alien Isolation was amazing!
@havoc33 @itsfoz Unfortunately Isolation didn't perform too well when it came out so the chances of a sequel are pretty remote. I think it sold a lot eventually but that was people picking it up on sale and/or gamepass.
It came out too soon after the Colonial Marines debacle and that really hurt it.
Obviously I'd want a direct sequel to happen to continue the story in Isolation (Amanda Ripley was a great character), but I've always thought the setting from Alien 3 would be perfect for a similar game. The stormy outsides of Fiorina Fury with the two suns in red and yellow and the oppressive prison would be really intriguing. Imagine if they replicate the scene where you trap the alien in the ledworks!
Looks, super cool, hope it delivers, will be in top of my wish list.
@itsfoz Isolation would have been a decent game if they shortened it by half.
Really excited but worried about the June release. It's too close to FF16 and Diablo IV just to name two.
Looks like Alienation reskinned but with... other Aliens. And that's no bad thing π
When will we get a AAA Aliens game, single player, third person.
@havoc33 Alien 3 gets a bad rap but itβs always been my favourite Alien movie, despite its flaws. I only wish someone would George Lucas the dodgy composite puppetry and replace it with modern CGI. But keep the practical effects - they were perfect.
@itsfoz really keen to see what the VR Alien game is like that's coming out. Set between the first 2 movies apparently and will be both VR and regular flatscreen. Really hoping it's more horror than action.
@itsfoz Complete snoozefest to me, i hate that game crawling through vents slowly and hitting androids 100 times each alongside annoying puzzles when if i wanted to do puzzles I'd buy a puzzle game.
Probably sit this one out. Isolation pretty much ruined me when it comes to Alien games. Everything else seems so underwhelming by comparison. Like wow, top down zombie shooter but with aliens. Let me get my wallet. π
I absolutely love the Aliens franchise and have played every game that's been released for it going back to Aliens vs. Predator on PS3 (loved that!!), but I may just pass on this. I'm not into real-time, X-com type strategy games AT ALL. This definitely looks good if that's your type of game, but it just isn't for me
@ItsBritneyB_tch I thought Alien 3 was a superb ending to the original trilogy. A lot of people were upset about Newt and Hicks, but it never bothered me. The idea that they would somehow live out the rest of their lives happily ever after is not what the franchise is about. Might be another unpopular take, but I think Aliens have aged worse than Alien 3. Fincher brought the series back to where it started; it's dark, nihilistic and relentless. Especially the Assembly Cut is really good, maybe except the scene where they swapped the dog with the cow. The theatrical version is actually the better of the two for that specific scene.
I'm loving the look of this, they nailed the lighting and atmosphere, and some of the mechanics mentioned sound like an interesting twist on the genre. That's a rough month to release though, it will probably harm their sales which is a shame.
Glad that its real-time π€
@ItsBritneyB_tch @havoc33 Newt and Hicks was a gut punch for sure but I was okay with it because yeah, that fits the franchise. Even Cameron's Aliens is fairly brutal so I wouldn't go as far as to say it hasn't aged well but that's just me. Overall though 3 felt like an overall good conclusion except the fx really haven't aged well in some parts. Then you have the Assembly Cut improving things and getting it mostly right but for the dog/cow switcheroo and sloppy looking effects. So I absolutely wish it could get some kind of anniversary post-release revamp.
But with Fincher essentially disowning it and Fox or Disney or whoever owns it now being entirely apathetic, I doubt we'll ever get anyone to care enough about it to put in the effort, or money.
@zupertramp yeah its a pity. I also hate the fact that Ridley didn't get to make a final movie to finish up his prequel series. I didn't like the direction Covenant took, but what the heck they can't just leave us hanging like that π π Oh, and btw i do like Aliens. It's just a little bit clichΓ©d maybe, with the gung-ho marines and macho 80s talk. It's definitely a classic though. ππΌ
@havoc33 Also don't have a great opinion of the recent Ridley (alien?) films but I totally agree... like give us an end at least!
@havoc33 I agree with everything you said. I might watch Alien 3 tonight π
@zupertramp my biggest issue with Prometheus and Covenant was the crew (except for David). Iβve always said if Prometheus had the crew from Danny Boyleβs Sunshine it would be a much better film. The crew in Prometheus (and Covenant) were all so unlikeable and poorly written. I still like the movies but they could have been so much more. Michael Fassbender was brilliant as David though.
@Deityjester I can respect that point of view (I loved it but felt it was overly long). I just can't understand how you could get 'drowsy' when my heart was beating out of my chest most of the time! π
@ItsBritneyB_tch Make it the Assembly Cut!
@ItsBritneyB_tch Prometheus would have benefitted from including a few of the deleted scenes. Still can't save some horrible writing though. Like how can a biologist freak out over the skeleton of an engineer, but in the next second stop to pet an alien snake lol. But the movie had ambition and I've grown to love it despite its flaws. Its just a shame we didn't get the real sequel, Prometheus: Paradise Lost, where we would have followed Elisabeth and David to the engineers homeworld. Due to a vocal minority complaining online, Ridley rewrote the sequel and instead of focusing on Elisabeth and exploring new alien species, we got too much David and a flawed attempt at crowd pleasing with bringing back the original alien creature. It was a mistake and it really hurt the momentum of the prequels.
@Ninjadeath2023 Damn shame, from what I've seen of Isolation on YouTube it looks amazing.
@Axelay71 When the multiplayer games stop selling like hotcakes.
