We're all waiting on a release date for Shadow of the Erdtree, the big expansion for Elden Ring that was first announced back in February. But just how far away is this DLC? Well, as spotted by @Ziostrom1 on Twitter, Shadow of the Erdtree has seemingly been in development for at least a year.
According to the FromSoftware director and producer Kenneth (Kin Yue) Chan's Linkedin profile — which has recently been updated — work on the upcoming expansion started in April 2022. That's around just two months after Elden Ring released.
This timeline suggests that Shadow of the Erdtree might not be too far off — but it obviously all depends on the scope of the DLC. Given the size of the base game, it's fair to say that we're all expecting an especially meaty expansion.
We're yet to actually see the DLC in action, but that's probably set to change over the next few months. We wouldn't be at all surprised to see Shadow of the Erdtree put in a major appearance during Summer Game Fest, for example. If we're lucky, we'll get a launch date as well.
When do you think Shadow of the Erdtree will release? Could it be later this year, or is it a lock for 2024? Whistle for Torrent in the comments section below.

Hope it has fewer re-used bosses, and maybe is a tad bit more linear.
Didn't mind it all that much in the main game but would want something a bit more focused.
I mean, I didn’t think it was that far from being finished given the base game has been out over a year? All well and good if it’s a massive bit of DLC, but if it’s going to take 2 years maybe why not do a sequel instead.
Most of the times I’ve finished such an enormous game I’m totally done with it, no matter how good it was. I just couldn’t get enough of Elden Ring though. It has been by far my best gaming experience ever and I have to stop myself to not jump back into it even now after I finished the end bosses a few months ago and have tons of games in my backlog. I’ll definitely play the DLC, perhaps in combination with a new game+ of the main game.
I haven‘t bought ER yet, so I‘m looking forward to the inevitable Complete Edition with all patches and DLC. Just hoping to find enough time for this monster.
Rarely play dlc since done with game when dlc drops.
Better they make other games instead of dlc.
I still need to get Elden Ring lol.
@Darude84 Same experience here. It is very similar to when I had played the first Dark Souls and it ruined other action games for more than a year, or when I went deep into Red Dead Redemption 2 and it killed open-world games for quite some time.
But now it's worse with Elden Ring, I have to force myself to not play it when I turn on my PS5, just so I can play other games.
Almost every time, my brain's reply to "what would I enjoy more, another playthrough of Elden Ring with another build or playing another game I've never played?" is... Elden Ring.
A real masterpiece.
@Neverwild Nah Fromsoft's DLC are actually top tier quality stuff. Old Hunters, Ringed City, Artorias of the Abyss are incredible work.
It's a shame it's likely going to be near 2 years when this actually releases.
Hoping it's a meaty expansion that smoothes out some of Elden Ring's shortcomings.
Stoked, I can’t wait to dive back in.
I'm grinding my way to level 500 in preparation. I'm on Journey 3 currently and at level 444.
@AstraeaV Won’t it be too easy then? Would be a shame if you easily breeze past every boss on the first try.
I hope this year but Q1 next year seems more likely
I just finished it this week so I’m itching for more. What a fantastic game and quite possibly the best FromSoft has ever done!
@Darude84 I was concerned with that as well but after a direwolf and archer rider two hit killed me I went right back to the grinding.
@AstraeaV @Darude84 I tried Journey 2/NG+ and got bored, everything was just too easy but I think it's fine for when you want to follow just the stories and have all the cool weapons and outfits. I started a proper new game and it's been as enjoyable as first time playing it.
I'm probably alone on this but why even bother with a DLC if it's over a year past the base game? I mean, I imagine most people have already moved on at that point. It makes more sense to work on an actual sequel or perhaps something else entirely. I just don't really get the point
I’m with @Darude84 here. I can’t think of the last time a game gripped me like Elden Ring. I was heavily into Dark Souls of course but Elden Ring made exploring the world so much fun. I explored every freaking inch and it was so rewarding…
I like to think From is the best at creating a world with a physical structure off in the distance — a huge castle up on a cliff or some towering thing somewhere-over-there — and invoking that feeling like, “oh man how do you get up there?” Or “Ah crap I’m gonna have to go in there at some point aren’t I?”
Been kind of slowly playing it again as I have time but I’ll be so ready when this DLC drops. I never buy DLC but I most certainly will be when this drops.
I highly doubt the DLC will be releasing this year. Early 2024 if we're lucky.
