Sony is enjoying enormous success adapting huge PlayStation franchises like The Last of Us to new forms of media, but it’s not limiting its efforts to live action. Speaking as part of an interview on the Official PS Podcast, the head of PS Productions Asad Qizilbash revealed that of its ten projects in production, there’s a “little bit of animation” on the way.
This shouldn’t come as an enormous surprise, as the Japanese giant obviously owns Sony Pictures Animation – the award-winning studio behind movies like Spider-Man Across the Spider-Verse – as well as companies like Aniplex and Crunchyroll. It’ll be interesting to see which franchises it picks to get the animated treatment.
Gravity Rush seems like a no-brainer, and it has received anime shorts in the past, but with no future games in production, it’s unlikely it’d pick this. We know Destiny is eager to explore a cross-media strategy – it played a role in Bungie’s decision to partner with PS Studios, after all – so some kind of animated adaption of the sci-fi series has potential, especially after the gigantic success of Arcane.
But what kind of animated series based on PlayStation franchises would you like to see? Let us know in the comments section below.

An Astro's Playroom or Rescue Bot adaptation would be nice.
An animated Horizon series would be fantastic and maybe we can finally get that Sly Cooper movie or TV show we we're supposed to have a while ago. Maybe a horror anime based on Forbidden Siren? That would be really cool
@GRQuake084 Yeah, I could easily see Astro becoming a CG Saturday morning cartoon for littles. My younger two kids loved those games.
So, Gravity Rush anime series, when?
OR it's time to bring Knack to the big screen!
It's crazy how Sony Pictures Animation's reputation was already rock-bottom even before they made The Emoji Movie.
Then they made Into the Spider-Verse and their reputation did a complete 180.
It's crazy how once widely-hated studios like Sony Pictures Animation and Illumination Entertainment are hailed much better than Disney and Pixar right now, while Disney and Pixar have had downfalls with their most recent films being box office bombs or being dumped on streaming.
Gravity Rush is a no brainer, I also think a Horizon series would be great.
And id love a bloodbourne anime.
@GRQuake084 Agreed. “It’ll be the next Minions” is a cliched elevator pitch, but I can see it hitting those same notes. The characters are cute and there’s a lot they can do — besides video game references the new format means they could even mimic Sony movie and tv shows (Ghostbusters, Men in Black, the Karate Kid, etc.).
@Hydra_Spectre I disagree with Illumination being anything other than a mediocre-at-best studio. They make shallow, colourful movies for very young children and the Mario movie didn't change that. A far cry from Pixar quality, even at their worst
@Hydra_Spectre I don't think Illumination is ranked so highly even after the Super Mario movie to be honest; their money making potential has never been in doubt even with Minions really.
Obviously Spider-Man absolutely transformed Sony Pictures Animation's reputation though.
I would freakin' love to see a Gravity Rush full anime adaptation. Do it Sony!
Sly Cooper. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT SONY!
That Rumored Jak And Daxter Movie Could be Animated. Also Hopefully They Give Ratchet And Clank Another Shot.
I Also Think Returnal Would make a great Anime.
@SplooshDmg they have been so unfair to Gravity Rush it deserves a anime or a movie.
A Horizon anime will be cool Sony own all theses anime companies why wouldn’t they make some PlayStation ip into anime.
I'm pretty sure a Gravity Rush movie was already announced altho I'm not sure if it came directly from Sony's mouth and therefore whether it's true or not. But I'd personally prefer an anime of it. I loved the 2 part animation they put out for it
I still don't get why exactly they chose gravity rush for an adaption. It's one of the most overlooked/unknown playstation ip of recent memory (rightfully so btw).
A bloodborne animated series would've been a lot more interesting.
I'm still sore the Sly Cooper movie was never released. I'm sure it would have been mediocre coming from the Ratchet & Clank studio but I was still eager nonetheless.
I think LittleBigPlanet could be really fun in animation. It could lend itself to short, self-contained episodes for all ages.
They should revive certain older Anime titles like Nagasarete Airantou, C3, School Rumble, Jubei Lovely ninja eyepatch, Ebiten, Aokana, My Sister My Writer, Magikano, Harukana Recieve, Non Non Biyori, Konohana Kitan, Anime Gataris, Are you Lost, RPG Real Estate, even recent ones like BOFURI (as of 2023), Shadow House and turn them into a video game or mini video game versions that leads to their references.
Plus many other titles.
I'd rather a Gravity Rush 3 for PS5
Gravity Rush. It deserves way more love then what Sony gave the games.
Been saying this for years. Do shows/movies in the style of the games in game cutscenes. Who cares if general audiences don't get it at first, if it's good and done well in time they will come around. I've had people tell me they can't watch the netflix Pinocchio because of the stop motion animation. You can't please everybody
I've been saying for a long time that adaptations of Sony's big games should be animated. The sort of spectacle you expect from God of War and Horizon, for example, would be near impossible to pull off properly in live action, in my opinion. Exciting that there's some animation to come!
We have one thread all about how all the studios are basically only working on online mtx chasers with scant few unknowns that could be core games, and then this thread about how all the unused ip we wait for games from are going to be anime and movies. Why does Atari seem like the only console vendor, using the term loosely, that's actually expanding their games potential? 😂
Legend of Dragoon anime to tie in with a full PS5 remake
I'm pretty sure a Gravity Rush movie was announced last year, though whether it is animated or live-action is unknown.
Still, I rather have a new Gravity Rush game. Don't really see a point in making the movie, besides gauging interest in the IP, considering how GR sadly has been put in the back corner along with certain other Sony IPs.
@Keyblade-Dan
Horizon as an animated show would be the only way you could even do that setting justice. I don't know what Netflix is smoking, thinking making their Horizon show live action is a good idea.
I enjoy Sony's exclusives, but other than perhaps Ghost of Tsushima I wouldn't really be interested in animated shows for them. Or shows period, to be frank.
@Quintumply Saaaame. Would love to see God of War or Bloodborne get the anime treatment. Animation can capture a lot more in those big action sequences than a live action show can. (Mainly due to the tech limitations in live action of course. Nothing against live action itself. whispers I've gotten in trouble for this before.)
I'd also love to see Crunchyroll be what PlayStation Premium is all about. Once there are a few PlayStation anime series, add Crunchyroll to the top tier to set it apart from the others finally.
Tearaway animated movie, please?
In the order I'd like to see the most
Ratchet and Clank
Resistance
Killzone
Horizon ZD/FW
inFAMOUS
Sly Cooper
Gravity Rush
Astro
Jak and Daxter
LittleBigPlanet
invizimals
Last two including astro aimed for kids, most for family, and the two shooters including infamous for adults with a lot of violence
@Beeeee-AHH-eer Animated series would be very welcome! Especially Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank, and Jak & Daxter.
@PegasusActual93 Agreed it's gonna be horrible I always want to keep an open mind but they have a track record when it comes to adaptations and it's anything but good
