Update: Not only is the PS5 trending ahead of the PS4 in the USA, but it also set a new PlayStation units record for March – after achieving the same feat for February last month as well. Estimates peg the sales at over 620k for March 2023, which is what the PSP sold at launch back in 2005. Basically, the new-gen console is selling extremely well.
Original Story: PS5 sales are now trending ahead of the PS4 in the USA when time aligned, demonstrating an incredible strategy from Sony following the initial launch period which was heavily supply constrained. The Japanese giant has flooded the market with hardware since the tail of last year, and it continues to be snapped up by hungry consumers, eager to get a taste of the new-gen console and its expanding library of games.
Unsurprisingly, the PS5 was the best-selling console in the USA in March 2023, and it helped lift hardware spending for the entire category. However, this was offset by a decline in content spending, which meant the industry as a whole slumped by five per cent year-over-year, totalling $4.6 billion in overall revenue.
Resident Evil 4 was the best-selling game for March 2023, although San Diego Studio’s MLB The Show 23 also enjoyed a strong start, finishing in third position – even with Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch digital sales excluded. Hogwarts Legacy continued to perform well in second, while The Last of Us: Part I continued its steady performance in fifth, following on from the enormous success of HBO’s adaptation.

You know just because you can stick Jim Ryan’s face on anything, shouldn’t mean that you should 🤢.
Well done Sony. Will probably jump on the train sometime later this year 🕷️
What the hell is that picture😂😂 oh lordy I can't look away😂 it's so bad it's brilliant!!
@Ichiban @Fight_Teza_Fight You're welcome! 🤣
Imagine how well it would've done if it hadn't been, so far, mainly a machine for playing PS4 games at 60fps. A PS4 Pro Pro, basically. Really looking forward to what comes next as we actually start the next gen.
Added in the software charts as well now!
But I thought the current management would destroy the Playstation brand as predicted by some zealots on here, what happened?? /s
Good to see PS5 stocks finally stabilizing. Now all one needs is that showcase.
Whoever makes these Jim Ryan edits is a genius 😂😂😂
Why is Goku's eyebrow leaking out of Jimmy Boy's ear? LMAO
@RBMango It's a magic eyebrow!
Spiderman 2 is going to be massive.
More funny Jimbo pics please, when appropriate of course
@jimbouk it’s just because Jim is a suit. He hasn’t actually done much wrong. But people say it’s from the previous management. But Phil gets away with everything coz he games and is your best mate. He is still a suit at the end of the day.
that thumbnail was clickbait gold hahaha
love it
@KaijuKaiser , Ryan has been conviniently painted as a scapegoat by moth media and gamers alike for faults of previous management ( Eg: Japan Studio decline). Now granted there have been some questionable decisions during his tenure( Console price increase, unnecesaary 10$ price upgrades) but the vast majority of it has been successful. PS5 so far has had much better games than the PS4 and PS3 had during it's initial two years and tbh, that's all that matters.
Oh, and also some weirdos love to simp after corpo execs who play games because they seem to think it's "cool". It's why the likes of Phil Spencer have such a cult like following.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner Exactly , suits are suits whether or not one plays games is completely irrelevant. There seem to be an alarmingly high number of gamers who pretty much worship these people.
@KaijuKaiser It's all PR. Like you say, they're all businessmen at the end of the day. Jim Ryan is good at his job as is proven by the ridiculous sales in unprecedented circumstances.
That's good, they need to sell while it's hot, because once MS had COD and when the next Elder Scrolls comes out, I can guarantee that a lot of the playerbase will switch to Xbox.
@Sil_Am In Florida state of the USA perhaps. Worldwide nobody like Xbox.
Omg that's gonna haunt me for awhile lol 😆
Updated with more info!
@Keiji, People underestimate the power of Elder Scrolls. We'll have to wait anyway, they might not even release the next game in this gen, with how long it's taking to make these games now.
@Sil_Am Your overestimate the power of ES in my opinion. Specially when it's day one on PC.
@get2sammyb Just saw you update which state "PS5 sets a new unit record for the Playtation brand, selling more than the 620K PSP set at launch back in March 2005".
It's even more impressive than I expected.
That's great and all, but it would be nice if we could get off the fence between the previous and the current generation and focus on the current one. After 29 months since the PS5 launch, it still feels personally as if we were sort of hanging in the middle of it.
@get2sammyb
With that Jim Ryan meme, I'm suprised you didn't go with "Super Rayan" for your subheading 😆
Header image is so cursed lmao
@Capirdbara Oh man, that's brilliant! Missed opportunity on my part! Well done! 👏
@Sil_Am they wont, first bc COD wont be an xbox exclusive for at least 10 years, or at least that what microsoft has been yaping nonstop since the Activision drama began ( also call of duty is not a console seller game, sure a lot of people play it but that's just bc its available) secondly elder 6 is years and years away, bethesda hasn't even been able to complete Starfield, the single (if only) most anticipated xbox exclusive game, and i assure you, that game is going to be a buggy mess at launch and it's going to backfire horribly on microsoft face, it may very well be the nail in the coffinig for them
@Fight_Teza_Fight I don't care if PS is doing well, I don't like Jim Ryan and I think he should change his mind about a lot of things.
@LordBakemono COD is definitely a system seller. It's the reason ABK is the biggest publisher in the industry. I do agree, even if MS gets ABK this gen is a wrap, and Gamepass might not be the disruptor many thought. It's not how majority of users are consuming games.
They really need to kill the ps4 already and focus on the ps5. It's time.
Something is way off with that photoshop'd picture. I think Jim Ryan's face is too small? His neck is in Goku's chin, from what I can decipher. It doesn't matter, I know
@Omnistalgic COD is not a console seller, i have never in my life heard someone (personally or online) say "im going to buy x or y console to play call of duty" bc call of duty has always been multiplatform since its release, so no its not a console seller and we wont know if it is until it becomes exclusive ( if it does) but i'm pretty sure it won't, xbox would be loosing a huge revenue and they know it, bc most people (as a poll showed) are not willing to switch from ps to xbox just for call of duty
