Sales of PS5 systems account for more than half of all console purchases in the UK during the first quarter of 2023, GfK data has revealed. Both Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S recorded percentage losses compared to the same period of time in 2022 (down by more than 25% and then 18% respectively) while sales of the PS5 were up a whopping 180%.
It's well documented how PS5 Stock has been in much more plentiful supply for the past six months or so, with the console also selling well in Japan and across the USA. In February, Sony set a new record for an individual PlayStation platform's unit sales in a single month. It's estimated around 500,000 consoles were sold to consumers within the USA. In Japan, PS5 has traded top spot with the Nintendo Switch for the past six weeks or so.
On the software side, just under eight million games were sold in the first quarter of 2023, representing a one per cent increase over last year. Hogwarts Legacy is the region's best-selling game of the year so far, outpacing the likes of Elden Ring and LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga from last year. Scaling the data down to March 2023 alone, Resident Evil 4 was the month's best-selling title, with 65 per cent of copies sold on PS5, PS4.

Hoping for a Final Fantasy 16 special edition console myself 🤞
I want to know from that 65% how many re4 remake sold on ps5, I remember miles morales and horizon fw is heavily skewed to ps5 sales.
It makes sense that, as the PS5 stock increases sales of other systems decrees. Sony won’t be too happy though, it shows people were buying alternate systems while stock was unavailable and they won’t regain all those sales back.
These are phenomenal numbers.
I’m not surprised the Uk and Europe is mostly PlayStation Territory just like Japan is mostly Nintendo Territory. North America is shared between PlayStation and Nintendo.
@4kgk2 Typically about half of all Nintendo hardware in the world is sold in America, some generations it's more than that. It explains why Americans tend to think Nintendo is more successful than it is. Also why this site seems quite international with a focus on the UK whereas Nintendo Life is much more American.
I'm not surprised, playstation actually have released more AAA exclusive games over the last two years compared to xbox, both first and third party. Playstation are actually giving it's fans reasons to get the new console whereas for xbox all they have is gamepass which is great value but it's nothing special to draw in the casuals especially with its focus primarily on indies.
I think the real battle was fought in the first 6 months. Ps5 was everywhere. Everyone was talking about it, even in comedies. The average person buys whatever everyone else wants.
So, now that the stock problems are mostly over, it's showing its real potential, unlike some other consoles that got a boost from the ps5's lack of availability.
Seems the comptetion has "inferior" consoles after all. Sony just speaking the cold hard truth...
Found a code for online DLC MGS the phantom pain for ps4 Q6K3M6NA6EN5 don't know if it works.
I think it's fair to assume that this year's PS Showcase is gonna be something special. Why, well if you look beyond Burning Shores, SM2, FF and TLoU Factions there's nothing officially confirmed for PS 1st party next year 2024, plus the huge sales of PS5 consoles over the last 6 months and the fact there was no PS Showcase last year on top of what appears to be Sonys lack of communication. Considering all of this Sony knows it has to deliver, if I can work this out then I'm pretty confident Sony can. Deliver the goods in what should be a really good Showcase to maintain the PS5's momentum
@get2sammyb just wait until the slim comes out, thats when PS hardware normally sells it’s most. That could really do huge numbers, cause PS5 at the moment is ugly to most people and tough to find a good fit for. When those are solved it will be insane. I will sell mine and get a new one for sure. It’s just too big and ugly.
@4kgk2 North America is the closest race between all 3. But i agree Europe is PS and Japan is Nintendo. Don’t look like that will be changing anytime soon, just wait until Sony releases a slim model that will sell insanely well.
@Green-Bandit I wouldn't call the PS5 ugly, it does look weird of course and yes it is to big. Disc PS5 got some nice curves on it and has grown on me a little. The Series X while not ugly is just a bland block, find the Series S to be mildly better looking than the X
@Victor_Meldrew
I see what you did there, very good!
Good to see their console availability sorted. Long May that last especially when more 1P is revealed hopefully next month
Think I read somewhere with Xbox they were allocating quite a lot for Xcloud in terms of console chips etc. perhaps with Starfield out later in the year they may allocate more consoles for consumer purchase
@Matroska Really ? Ive always thought (even more so recently) that this site is more USA leaning judging by language and slang usage.
@Beerheadgamer82 Agreed the Series X is a little boring but it works, Series S is really nice in size and fit’s just about anywhere and i am sorry but for my eyes only, the PS5 is ugly, it can’t lay flat without a stand or it wobbles. That is over engineered on purpose. No console should need a stand to lay flat, it is so wide that most furniture don’t fit it or at least allow it to vent and look proportionate. I did however put the black Sony plates on it and that made it appear more slim and not so eye catching, but i really must say it’s not a great design for me and many others, i will pre order a slim day one if they are available and will be selling my PS5 original. The fact that the PS5 engineer said he made it bigger than final design and Sony asked for it to be shaved off some, is concerning for me.
@IAmAshCohen17 the series consoles are selling less because the demand for it gotten lower since people can get ps5 easily now. The chip shortage help Xbox out a lot now that it’s over things are gone back to normal.
Are u really suprised tho??? 🤣👍 everyones already got a switch and who the f wants an xbox so of course ps5 sales will be up
One of those was mine....then I sent it back to Uncle Jimbob with a note to say keep me posted when anything of interest comes out!
I am very keen to see what the slim/short/redesign looks like - I mean, it can't be as ugly as the current one, can it?
@Green-Bandit it's the fact that it wobbles in the horizontal even with the stand in place! It's just too damn ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb!
@4kgk2 the UK is not really PlayStation territory. Its the closest market in the world
"The UK games industry is the most competitive console market in the world. Over the last 10 years, Xbox, PS and Nintendo have all led the market at one point.
Last year, Xbox Series, PS5 and Switch all had over 30% market share each (GfK data)
In terms of PS4 vs Xbox One, 57% of sales were for PS4 and 43% for Xbox One. On PS5 vs Xbox Series it's pretty much the same (56% vs 44%). It's close"

Congratulations to PlayStation, some impressive numbers indeed
@Smiffy01
I can only speak for myself but I have found that this is probably the most active PlayStation site on the internet that isn't a cesspool of crap opinions, misogyny, and bigotry.
Sure that stuff still happens from time to time like everywhere else, but the moderators are very good at ensuring it doesn't go on too long.
I am from Canada and would rather spend my days here lurking and reading comments than over at the Official PlayStation Blog.
Also, good job to the marketing team at SOE. They have done a great job of keeping this console relevant through a pandemic and now a financial crisis. I think this is going to be a very PlayStation Christmas...lol...
@grapetrap Yip can totally agree on those points raised 👍
@4kgk2 and the lack of first party from Xbox also a big factor too
Sony's Steamroller for another generation. It deserves the sales, they made a fantastic piece of tech.
@Matroska
Xbox also does very well here in the United States.
It’s the only territory they are actually successful in.
Well deserved success. You can't go wrong with PlayStations.
@grapetrap Agreed on all points, and hello from a fellow Canadian lurker!
@Green-Bandit I have mine horizontal and it only wobbles slightly when you have to move it about for cleaning and things like that, when in daily use like inserting discs it never wobbles, its firmly in place. Definitely agree about its size though, wouldn't be surprised if some gamers have had to get a new TV table just to fit their PS5 better. It is interesting what a new PS5 slim will look like. So many rumours atm about detachable, slim and pro
@sanderson72 agreed it is just a bad design. I am sure the slim and pro will be better or at least i hope. Take the curves out and make it lay flat for starters and you have a winner.
PS5 sales up by 180%, but software sales only up by 1% ?
I mean I get it two years ago. As a day one adopter or those that were fairly early adopters jumping in believing the marketing deceptions we were fed. Yet now two years later, the generation is still nowhere to be found. If you weed out the cross Gen games, PS5 has less than 5 console/generation exclusive games after nearly 3 years. Along with Sony being largely radio silent in this time frame as well.
At this point its far more wise a decision to wait for the mid generation upgraded console. Not merely for the reason that a generational shift never took place, but also because even with the cross Gen games and the handful of native current Gen games available; the base ps5 isnt capable of outputting next Gen graphical fidelity and features with a framerate performance above 30—45 fps, nor does it have a true and needed VRR range. Thus we have to choose between what often amounts to mostly a medium pc settings standard with a higher resolution target, or downgraded medium hybrid settings with a 60fps target. Save your money and wait for more capable hardware at this point.
The load times are great, and having a sometimes console exclusive 60fps option for a cross Gen game is expected. Yet had I known that 2 years and 4 months later we would still only have maybe 5 ps5 only titles that all released in the first 10 months, I would have probably waited for the mid Gen refresh cash grab as well. (especially considering two of those 5 games were just destruction Allstars and Astros playroom).
Having PS5's on store shelves was their first hurdle. Now Sony needs to give us a reason why we have one other than it plays PS4 games better than the PS4.
Sony needs to have a massive showing exciting even the most pessimistic of us.
Careful! If Microsoft catches wind that people love PlayStation and it's a popular brand, Microsoft will try to buy them. They love buying things that people enjoy.
@Loamy literally come on here just to put patents dont lie hahahahha legend
@TheCollector316 isn't that Xbox moto. Don't do anything ourselves becaise we s*ck at it instead just buy and take what people love for themselves.
Still love the fact they will all claim xbox first party games are amazing, when the top third party games come out from Bethesda, in my mind no matter exclusivity Bethesda studios and id and the rest of them will always in my mind be seperate from xbox first party.
@Green-Bandit Put black plates on it, blends into an entertainment centre well when horizontal 👍
As someone that genuinely likes MS and Xbox products, they have a pretty serious problem at their feet right now. Momentum for Xbox consoles seems to be completely dead, or at the very best on holiday until they decide to actually do something again.
@Smiffy01 i bought the Sony black plates and i have the Digital only so it’s a touch smaller. But overall not my favorite design. Sony can do better than this. This seems like trying hard to be special and falling short and just being awkward. Again no console should need a stand to lay flat, that is a no no.
@Bez87 So somehow playstation buying insomniac, guerilla, sucker punch, and ND isn't the same thing?
I am a longtime Sony fan, but I'm not willfully ignorant enough to suggest that Sony is somehow any different or less predatory in their business practices than Microsoft gaming division. It's 100% why Microsoft is buying up what they are. To try and carve out a larger patch of the market share that Sony dominates.
@Green-Bandit Fair enough, ive got the disk version only because it was only version available. Waiting for the new model in sept without disk drive as im all digital.
@KundaliniRising333
Sony developed relationships with specific studios, nurtured them, supported them, and provided tech and training. Then after years of collaboration asked if they would be willing to join the Sony family which now continues to allow them to work independently without any kind of external pressure.
Microsoft, on the other hand, strong arm entire publishers with fat cheques and promises of fatter ones so that the elite CEOs of said publishers have no choice but to sell off dozens of assets just to make a buck for stakeholders. Then they throw everything on Game Pass, squander IPs, and fail to deliver on any promises.
So ya, (shrug) Same Thing
@Smiffy01 yeah i waited and waited on a PS5 Digital, as they were even harder to find cause they produced less. Finally found a digital PS5 and got the black plates as soon as they went live for purchase. My Series X obviously has a disc drive and I haven’t even used it once, really wish they had a $400 digital version as well. Switch i have a 256GB card in a Oled model and haven’t bought any physical games for that either. I used to live in small places and digital was the way to go, now i have a media/game room and could support the space for discs but just don’t want to or see the need. I will be buying a slim PS5 in September if the inventory is there and won’t be buying the rumored Disc drive, i however like the strategy they are taking with that.Selling digital systems and letting players add a drive if they want. Thats a great idea for both sony and the player.
@KundaliniRising333
Please for the love of God, do your research.
I did write a very large history lesson for you but its to long for push Square.
So I'd like you to just look up what I say.
I won't be detailed here.
Insomniac; long history of exclusive partnership with Sony, very close relationship, buys them.
Sucker Punch; made a few games at the begining for pc/mac, then makes an entire series for Sony, strong partnership. Buys them.
Guriella; didn't have great success until Killzone, in partnership with Sony, agree to more games, other companies wanted a piece, both agree together. Buys them.
Naughty Dog; makes 3 games and a kart racer, iconic Crash Bandicot. Neither of them owned the rights decide next game best do it together without third partner. Buys them.
Their whole first party teams have the same stories.
Microsoft, buys ZeniMax gets Bethesda studios and the rest. No strong history together. Bought success.
Minecraft unworldly succesful buys them. Bought success.
Activision recording breaking first person shooter and multi billion dollar mobile division. Bought success.
Halo was a apple game so they outright buys the ip and bungie. Buy teams just to keep it going.
Destroys Rares magic takes years for them to come back. Cant even seem to get perfect dark back up.
Buys Tomb Raider Sequel exclusively. No prior history.
Many more stories like this from Microsoft.
Not enough room to write but please go look it all up. There is a huge difference.
@KundaliniRising333 completely different. Sony buy devs and improve them and bring out new ip’s that are usually GOTY contenders!! Wen Sony bought Naughty Dog they were making games for Apple 2. Since Sony bought them we’ve had Uncharted 1-4, Uncharted Lost Legacy an TLOU 1, 2 and Left Behind. What devs have MS bought and improved an brought out new, incredible games??? None!! They buy already huge devs an simply make the 3rd party games exclusive.
