The latest instalment in the Utawarerumono series, Monochrome Mobius: Rights and Wrongs Forgotten, is heading West this autumn / fall on PS5 and PS4, courtesy of NIS America. Originally released in Japan last year, this is a turn-based RPG adventure set in the long-running franchise's fantastical world.
The game was relatively well received when it launched on Steam back in November, with players praising its characters and gameplay systems. If you're into your more traditional Japanese RPGs, complete with some modern sensibilities, then this will probably be one to watch.

Was hoping this would happen eventually. It looked so good and tempting on Steam so many times now.. Hopefully its a physical release as well.
Edit: Nvm. Physical Limited Edition confirmed!
@rawzeku If it's NISA, they'll surely make a physical version.
@Sil_Am That's very much what im hoping, or even a Limited Edition. But nowadays you never know.
I think I read there were some issues with the PC version so I hope they could've maybe patched things up for this release
But can't wait, all the more reason to continue playing thru the series. I played the 1st game and loved it
Sadly NISA decided to skip the previous Game ZAN 2
Never played an Utawarerumono game before, they didn’t seem appealing to me. But this looks like a traditional turn-based JRPG, so it’s piqued my interest.
Very much excited. The artstyle used here is absolutely beautiful. Can’t wait.
Never played the series. Where do I start?
@Corc11 I'm new to the series with Mask of Deception and the ZAN version of the Mask of Deception story so can't say much but I'll say for the formats then story and such.
I found a reddit here though for starting out: https://www.reddit.com/r/Utawarerumono/comments/l3fbr3/newbie_faq_read_this_first/
Mask of Deception and Mask of Truth are the newest I think prior to this new entry while Prelude to the Fallen is the oldest entry (was a eroge/tactics on PC in Japanese but it got a PS4 release later, I think but the other two entries are more tamer and just tactics/visual novels as far as played of Mask of Deception at least). There is two others but they seem to be mobile games those being Lost Frag and Mugen no Roulette. So otherwise 3 console games really if focusing on those. Besides the ZAN games being hack n slash versions of the Mask games. So 5 console with 1 oldest entry, 2 newer, hack n slash retelling than their tactics versions and the new one coming besides the mobile games.
Both Mask and the Fallen games are on PS4 and Steam. With the Mask games on Vita but I can't find them as easily at least in my AU store region so can't say for US/EU stores (with I think the PS3 versions being in Japan only).
The ZAN versions are more your Senran Kagura, Neptunia U or other Tamsoft style hack n slashes in arenas with the same stories as the Mask games just presented differently if you aren't into Tactics games (as far as the demo I tried of one of the ZAN versions was).
So you have that. There is the anime I think for each of games out so far which is an option.
I can't say for the ZAN versions much but the tactics ones are long for the visual novel sections so if you can sit through those for hours your good.
Mask of Deception was released first before Truth but in the West they were pretty much released same day May 23rd 2017. Then Sept 24 2015 for Deception, and Truth Sep 21 2016. For chronology I assume same as release order I think. With Prelude to the Fallen in 2020 for PS4/Vita and I assume Steam as it is there.
Even as someone that doesn't mind visual novels I did find them really long and the tactics parts are fine enough to time attacks and position where to go (can seem basic though at times) but you will either keep grinding because of the next tactics battle is a long way away due to how the menus work it can be awkward so I just grind a few levels because you can't quit the visual novels to get to battles you just can't only at the battle segments can you do more battles to grind (for some reason) or wait until the battle, see how you do and well grind past levels with however many there is if you can't beat the current battle.
They are fine games but yeah if you came for the tactics side at least with Mask of Deception I'd say be prepared for the 90% visual novel reading and 10% tactics at least early on I'm probably 10hrs in (I forget, maybe later it differs of battle/VN moments but even as someone that wasn't bothered by Valkyria Chronicles cutscenes and battle approaches being spread thin either and skirmishes in-between I found the Utawarerumono games more annoying with the VN moments but you might not feel the same way) I think and yeah had about 4-5 battles and the rest visual novel. The first 3 hrs or so is mostly visual novel and I think 1 battle, maybe the 2nd.
Again only played the ZAN demo so can't say much more there. Either way hope that helps.
A huge help. Cheers!
Oh thank Nisa saving this.
I love the series, but i'm not playing it on PC.
@Magnus_Selene The zan games are a retelling of mask of deception and mask of truth. Yeah, i would have liked to have gotten both, but you can experience the story by playing the main mask of truth or watching the anime season 2.
