The impeccable Dead Cells, alongside its superb Return to Castlevania expansion, is coming natively to PS5. Confirmation comes as publisher Merge Games and developer Motion Twin have announced all-new physical bundles, which will be available on both PS5 and PS4 from 11th August. These retail releases will include all previously released DLC packs, including the aforementioned Konami crossover.
“Available for pre-order from today, standard retail editions of Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania will feature reversible retro cover art, harking back to the Nintendo Entertainment System and original PlayStation eras, while the deluxe Signature Edition adds a host of collectable extras including the epic CD soundtrack, an exclusive art book, pin badges, and more,” the press release reads.
The official blurb adds: “Featuring the original base game for Dead Cells along with downloadable contents Rise of the Giant, The Bad Seed, Fatal Falls, and The Queen and the Sea plus 34 more free updates, Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania introduces a brand new storyline across two new biomes.”
The aforementioned Signature Edition includes the following bonuses on top:
- Unique Signature Edition outer sleeves
- Alternative disc soundtrack featuring 28 original Castlevania tunes reimagined in a Dead Cells style
- Collection of four enamel pins
- Exclusive art book
- Five snapshot photos souvenirs of the Beheaded in Castlevania
- Lenticular castle card
- Four Dead Cells: Return to Castlevania postcards featuring printed signatures
- Special edition collectors box
While there’s no date for the PS5 version beyond these physical editions, existing owners will be able to upgrade from the PS4 for free. The press release notes: “Putting to use all of the console’s features, players will feel every enemy they take down and power they use with trigger effects, custom vibrations, feedback using the DualSense’s speaker and lightbars, and more.”

Yes! Dead Cells is my favourite indie ever made and I have it on every console. Sure hoping we get a free PS5 upgrade for the digital PS4 version. If not, I’ll just buy it for the fourth time! I’ve got hundreds of hours in this.
@The_Pixel_King It's a free upgrade, just adding some more info now!
Curious about the soundtrack - thought the composer had mentioned in interviews that ~12 tunes were rearranged for the DLC…if they went and did another 16 for this soundtrack release that would be pretty amazing!
That alone is probably going to push my preorder, along with all the art and Castlevania styling I just looooooved this expansion. Have my fingers crossed Konami considers Motion Twin for developing a full Castlevania title in the future.
Hopefully I can autopop the plat on PS5
One of the best games of the previous generation is still fantastic today. The team can't be lauded enough for its support to the game, both with free and paid content.
Now just one question about its PS5 version : 120Hz mode please?
I'll have to install this seeing as dead cells is my fave of the metrovania style games. And a free ps5 upgrade just made this game one of the all time greats. If a small indie team can continue to knock out this kind of quality support for free then it just shows that the big studios are quite lame.
@The_Pixel_King nice dude, I have both those plats too. Good stuff
Dang. I knew if i waited like 4 years they would finally come out with a physical version. Really wish they would have done this a couple yeas ago. I am too cheap to buy half of this all again but for those that havent played it you should. Awesome awesome game.
Awesome to finally have official confirmation and a solid release date.
@Adaminoregon what do you mean? Dead cells has had a physical release for a long long time
