Gran Turismo – the movie, not the game! – looks pretty good! The film, due out in theatres this August, is based on the real-life story of Jann Mardenborough, a gamer who progressed through the GT Academy to eventually race for Nissan. You can basically extract the entire plot from this two minute trailer, but seeing as it all actually happened, we already know how this tale ends anyway. (Spoilers: he finishes third at Le Mans!)
Neill Blomkamp is on director duties, and there’s undoubtedly some stunning cinematography on the racing scenes. We’re not entirely convinced by some of David Harbour’s lines – the whole “scrawny gamer” stuff seems a little cliché – but it might make more sense in the context of the full-length film. This is being billed as an inspirational, feel-good affair – it has potential, we suppose.
We can’t see this one setting Box Offices alight to be honest, the concept just seems a little too niche to draw in huge audiences. We’re also not overly enamoured with the movie’s slogan, “From Gamer to Racer”. Is that really the best they could come up with? Geez! Nevertheless, this might be worth a watch when it releases later in the year.

This doesn’t need to be and shouldn’t be a movie
Ngl looks pretty good, heartfelt in a way.
Aside from some dodgy bits in the script, I thought it was a good trailer personally!
Looks pretty good
Correction: David Harbour is an actor who acts in this movie, he is NOT the script writer. Was taken aback there for a second.
No need to watch the movie now 😉
@Chapapa I think it means the script that he has to read, not the script of the film that was written.
@Chapapa I meant the lines he's reading, but I can edit!
This looks far better than a Gran Turismo movie has any right to look.
Has potential. Now imagine if they made a Gran Turismo movie during the PS2 era. 😏
Looks alright, you know!
Looks enjoyable enough. I'm assuming they will want to keep it positive and not include the Nürburgring incident though.
Def looks a lot better than I was expecting.
Perfect popcorn flick on the big screen. Honestly, it looks any better than it has any right to
Well a biopic is much more interesting than what I assumed the movie was going to be - some drole racing drama.
Yeah, the slogan absolutely sucks. "From Gamer to Racer" is pathetic. How about "From Virtual to Reality; one man's journey to the chequered flag"? You could probably delete everything after the semi-colon, but this was suggested to me by ChatGPT, and is far better.
This looks a lot better than I thought it was going to be. Maybe because it's based on a true story and not good guy vs bad guy on the road.
This looks pretty bad honestly. Fairly cut and paste "scrawny underdog trains hard and overcomes" story. Looks like it exists for marketing purposes alone. Anyway I didn't have high hopes so no disappointment here.
Really not sure why you'd put a spoiler in the article though.
Oh my god it looks atrocious. Why do we keep enabling absolute bargain bucket crap just because it’s tangibly connected to games?
For those who do not get it... "Based on a true story. The ultimate wish fulfilment tale of a teenage Gran Turismo player whose gaming skills won a series of Nissan competitions to become an actual professional race car driver." Got it? I am excited 😀
Just watched the trailer on my PS5.
At first I thought it was a documentary about a kid who really did this. Not a movie movie, a doc w/ the real kid, but then his dad was Djimon Hounsou and I was like what are the odds his kid did this in real life?
Then Legolas showed up, who looks MUCH better here than he did in Carnivale Row, so I was like, oh it's one of those Sony only gamer competition shows, which I really thought once David Harbour showed up.
But then the longer it went I was like wait, this is an actual movie, must be a dramatization.
Then I saw "only in theaters" and I was like, who is going to theaters to see this made for streaming real life but it isn't movie? Surely not I.
Could have been worse, could have just been a "Days of Thunder" remake w/o Tom Cruise, so I appreciate that it isn't. But with that said, this looks kind of forced and I'd rather watch an actual documentary about the real kid on Hulu or something.🤷
Dune 2 just got announced for November 3rd of this year. Now that's a 2nd half of a long slow boring movie I'll go see in theaters. #FearistheMindKiller
@StrickenBiged I think the slogan "From Gamer to Racer" is from the original GT Academy, so it´s not something they came up with for this movie, I think they're just referencing something from the history of the event. But yeah, it´s not good.
They should do this with the new Street Fighter. Show someone who's mastered all the combos and then tries to apply them in the UFC.
Cant wait to see Driver Man become the bestest and fastest racist of the whole Le Driver Mans
Well hidden spoiler, bravo 👏🏻
@get2sammyb ohhh, my bad, I didn't interpret it that way, but now I see it clearly
Look all Sony has to do is promise they will lock Neil away in a room and torture him until he agrees to do District 10 and I will go at least twice to see the film.
Orlando Bloom.. eehehe nahhh man
Looks a bit naff, I won't be watching it.
Its a bummer that we've seen more trailers for TV shows & movies based on Playstation games, than actual Playstation games of late.
I'll see it in theaters, should be a good buffer movie between Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem and DC Comics' Blue Beetle.
As a huge GT fan, I was excited to watch the trailer, then David Harbour turns up and it all turns to plop.
So from the Sunday Cup to Pro. From gamer to GT Academy to real driver. Yep already knew that before I hadn't seen the trailer yet...... Then again no cutting the corner in Trial Mountain as you can't in GT7 so is it really accurate to the games. Nope. XD
The drama is a bit eh but I mean GT Academy to pro driver is a thing after all it is real even if the slogan is yeah cheesy it's real.
Racing games sales for GT games are always high and people seem to forget that they were alongside GTA for games people bought a console for. People may not care for racing games but doesn't mean there isn't an audience.
Racing movies aren't big I know that but at the same time I mean why not attempt it I welcome them making this movie then an action movie with cars as props like it usually is and certain racing movies about historical events coming out and being really engaging watches. I'd rather a niche audience focused movie giving an attempt than the same thing over and over that's generic and some ideas that are a bit crazy, could work or be just as terrible as they seem at first glance.
The drama hmm. AI sure but the real drivers hmmmmmm. The romance elements sigh. Sigh, club scenes because of course they have to be there. XD
While it is just marketing their GT Academy it is still 'real' so it's kind of cool and does make the 'oh I wish it was real or stayed fictional' side really interesting because it is real and the esports side (that I don't care for at all just playing the games singleplayer in multiple ways for challenges in any way I the player want not the linear GT7 approach and too much online focus, yay how to make a disappointing anniversary just like FM6 was).
He has all but GT1, GT 2002 Concept Tokyo Geneva, GT HD Concept and GT4 Prologue on the shelf let alone a manufacturer demo, the betas, GT4 Online Beta or even the Platinum/Greatest Hits versions of GT1-5/Sport (6 and 7 don't have any of that branding) is he a real fan? XD Nah cool nod to them being there still.
At least it will be better use of the game having purpose even if game product placement (will we see past entries probably not. Surprised even Ratchet movie had Ratchet 3 multiplayer in it at all to be honest) than Last of Us 1 in Pixel for some showing off the game and making a mature modern games message while focusing on retro games in a Sony live action movie which was weird....
I think the movie may be good who knows. Not into the other IPs as much but I see potential in a GT movie even if it was probably completely unnecessary and just pushing an IP into movies because of course. Not into GT7 at all I'm never playing it, it does many things I don't like and nothing in the game will change it has it's roadmap and sticks to it. I still prefer the older entries more so it's not going to make me go and experience the game like Sony wants people to. XD
But for a movie of an IP I mean the Ford/Ferrari movie was well done I enjoyed that a lot. So I'm fine with more racing movies whatever angle they take than just oh cars are there for action movies when they can be for other things too.
If it was a movie about CoD, presumably the tagline would be "From Gamer to Racist"?
(Only took me 2 weeks to think of that one, good thing I don't write headlines for a living.)
