If you can cast your mind back to the last time Sony hosted a livestream – and, trust us, we know that was eons ago – you may recall that it started out with confirmation of a Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic remake, which was slated to launch as a console exclusive for PS5. Since then, the project has been hit by a huge delay, and development was yanked off Aspyr Media and handed to Saber Interactive.
Despite the changes, it doesn’t look like much progress is being made – and you certainly shouldn’t expect an update during today’s PS Showcase. Speaking as part of an investors meeting, as described by Axios’ Stephen Totilo, CEO Lars Wingefors was asked for the latest on the project. “[My] favourite question,” he said. “I have no further comments.”
Considering this was planned to comprise a big part of PlayStation’s portfolio – it was even signed on to publish the release, and was collaborating on development – this doesn’t sound particularly promising, does it? It could be that Wingefors is simply acting coy ahead of a big re-reveal, but considering the title’s turbulent route to market thus far, we’re going to assume this release is trapped in development hell for now.

If it comes out probably won't be until 2025 at the earliest. I saw where THQ lost a partnership with an undisclosed company, so wonder if Sony cancelled their deal
Sad, this project was doomed the moment they announced it, I got really excited until I saw the Aspyr logo, hope Playstation gives it to one of their own teams.
Wow, I always believed high profile projects like this should be handled by more accomplished studios. Had Sony Bend or another PS Studio been on this it would have faired much much better. Even if it was a timed exclusive.
Grubb seemed to imply the other day this might never see the light of day which would be a shame
this is the New Last Guardian, it'll eventually come out but will take as long
I said we were in trouble as soon as it was announced, as Aspyr were developing. KOTOR on switch (by the same studio) was a complete distater
@3Above Does Sony even own the rights to hand it off to one of their internal studios? Cause I feel like Sony didn’t really have a say in who developing it and are just paying for it development for it be exclusive.
I’m not entirely convinced that this will ever release.
What a damn shame. One of the best RPGs of all time and arguably best Star Wars game as well. Hate to hear that it’s in so much trouble. I really want this remake to be a shining spectacle, but I’m not holding my breath.
@AverageGamer I doubt that they have the rights. But I think it should have been offered to them. If this deal was anything like FFXVI Sony was probably going to provide some development support. With that much money and resources at stake better to Liscense the ip to Sony for 1 game.
Could they perhaps borrow some guys or gals from Bluepoint?
Deep Down, I think we all know this isn't coming out ever.
This will likely never see the light of day.
I may have read over it in the article, but Lars Wingefors is CEO of which company? Aspyr or Saber?
@pyrrhic_victory "Lars Wingefors is the cofounder and CEO of Embracer Group, Europe's biggest gaming company" This guy is having a really bad day 🙁
@3Above Ah thanks for the clarification, I was thinking too small 🤦♂️
Sounds like it was Metroid Prime 4'd. Announced early, but the original devs weren't doing a good enough job, so development was restarted with someone else.
The second they had said Aspyr was in charge of this, I lost all hope immediately. Glad to see that pessimism wasn't misplaced.
Why would you write this? Why would you deliberately hurt me like this, Sammy?
This is the remake for which they hired the writer that vocally hates the source material, right? Just asking.
This will see the light of day. There just too much money on the table for it not too. The question is not if, but when. It may not even be playstation at some point, but it will come out. At least from my strategic arm chair game player perspective.
@NEStalgia a lot of SW projects since Disney have been written by people who don't: know/care/like the source material in a variety of ways. Those projects have never ended well.
@redd214 ...I see what you did there 🤣
Just play the original. I bought it for £2.99 on Xbox X sale - it upscales really well. It will still be better than the remake.
@KingPev
@Ralizah Pretty much this exactly. Hilariously I still see us getting the KOTOR remake before Metroid Prime 4 releases.
Nintendo is gonna milk the 2 & 3 remasters, prob get 2 in 2024, 3 in 2025, and finally 4 in 2026.
@KidRyan I think we'll see MP4 by next year at the latest. Retro has had about five or so years to work on the game, after all.
@Ralizah I seriously doubt they'd release three Metroid Prime games in 2024 though, and they wouldn't skip 2 or 3 before releasing 4.
I suppose it's possible they could shadow drop MP2 in Fall 2023, and then MP3 could release in Spring 2024 and MP4 in Fall 2024.
Seem to remember the writing was handed to a right proper idiots who took to twitter saying the usual ***** about SW fans and lost all interest 🤔 which is a shame as I'm playing the OG version at min just got BIG Z!!! from sewers as we speak 🤩🤩🤩
Maybe best not to be made, to many box ticking no respect for source material.
