Pixel Ripped 1978 is conceptually so awesome because it’s marrying contemporary technology like PSVR2 with retro nostalgia. The game, for those who missed the announcement, sees you assume the role of an Atari employee in the late 70s, where you’re tasked with working on some of the iconic publisher’s hits – and immersing yourself in the games themselves.
If you haven’t played a Pixel Ripped game before, they’re incredibly clever. In the first instalment on PSVR, for example, you’re tasked with playing a simple sidescroller on a Game Boy in school, and you have to avoid detection by your teacher. The association with Atari here stands to elevate the entire experience, as classics like Yars’ Revenge and many more will be officially represented.
There’s no release date beyond a vague “coming soon”, but we’re confident this will be one to keep a close eye on – especially if you’re a fan of old-school 80s arcade gaming. Personally, we love how Atari’s been licensing out its catalogue lately, and this just seems like the perfect place to see its old-school classics represented.

The other pixel ripped games are dope. dont have a psvr2 yet but I'll definitivelly check this out whenever I do.
@LordOfTurnips Love them! I hope they port over the old ones when this comes out!
I enjoyed the first Pixel Ripped outing, but the collaboration with Atari seems like its making this something special. I can’t believe I’m saying this, in the year of our lord 2023, but Atari has been on a bit of a roll lately.
Never played a Pixel Ripped game, haven't heard of it until now, but with the Atari association this looks like it could be special!
Saw on Twitter a few weeks ago they were just polishing the game, so hopefully not too long to wait.
I can't wait!! The creativity on display merged with VR should produce a strong case for VR gaming in general. You can't do this in 2D!
Looking forward to this! PSVR2 just keeps on giving!! Golf and fisherman's tale on the 11th...where's this dearth of games??
Personally I can't say I enjoyed Pixel Ripped 1989 that much.
Although the game-within-a-game stuff is neat, I found the mini games themselves to be pretty boring and uninspired takes on games from that era.
Looks really nice and fun.
@SgtTruth Well, I'll take a 7/10 PSVR2 game over any flat-screen title. This headset has ruined traditional games for me. VR is just on another level.
Yes looking forward to this one. Personally just want an Astrobot announcement though!!!
