The next PlayStation first-party game to hit PC storefronts is Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The PS5 console exclusive, renowned for its gorgeous visuals and near-instant loading, has just been confirmed for release on Steam and Epic Games Store.
Developer and PC porting specialist Nixxes Software is behind this version of Insomniac's colourful action platformer. It's set to launch on PC platforms on 26th July, 2023. Julian Huijbregts has taken to the PS Blog to provide some more details.
The PC version features ray-traced reflections as well as new ray-traced shadow tech to take the already stunning game to the next level. In addition, various ultra-wide aspect ratios will be supported, the game's frame rate will be unlocked, and you can choose from numerous performance enhancing options. These include "NVIDIA DLSS 3, AMD FSR 2, Intel XeSS and Insomniac Games’ Temporal Injection" as well as "NVIDIA Reflex and image quality enhancing NVIDIA DLAA".
Furthermore, the game includes mouse and keyboard support, but also supports controllers and will make use of DualSense's features when plugged in.
Pre-orders are live now, and doing so will grant you access to the Pixeliser weapon and Carbonox armour set. Will you be picking up Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart on PC? Shoot into the comments section below.

Hell yeah. Glad to see PC players get to experience Ratchet and Clank at their best! (As long as the release isn't get botched)
Also considering how incredible it already looks on PS5, I can't WAIT to see how it looks on PC.
Usually I have no problem with Playstation games being ported to PC, that’s even nice, because more people can get into all the amazing titles and have some fun. But at the moment I feel a little bit disappointed: no new single-player games from internal studios shown during the last showcase, but more and more being ported.
So Demon Souls is the only good PS5 exclusive game now lol. If you didn’t have a PS5 you really missed nothing tbh.
Magic SSD was probably nonsense also
PS Studios the last 12 months or so:
2 PS4/PS5 exclusives
6 PC Ports
Incoming (announced):
1 PS5 exclusive
1 PC port
3 live service (all PC day one)
I have zero regrets about getting PS5 day one because the other option has nothing, but I ate that "only possible with PS5 SSD" marketing stuff up and certainly don't feel like a first class citizen, especially compared to PS4.
@Tomato_Goose But there were new games from PlayStation Studios.
First thing I'm going to do is test it on a standard HDD and see if their talk of an SSD being required really were true (it wasn't needed for The Medium despite Bloober Team saying otherwise).
@JSnow2 Shows how much Sonys focus shifted from the PS5 to PC lol
There you have it, that's the PS announcement for the Summer Fest LOL.
And sadly it won't sell on PC because PC players are ... special.
It's coming from Nixxes, so it will more than likely be a high-quality PC port. Also, why the hell wasn't this at the showcase? Totally bizarre.
@LiamCroft your truth, corrected the initial comment - no new single-player games. Guess, I am too old to jump into any kind of multiplayer PVP titles and pray for more games which can be enjoyable solo.
Nice. It's a great game. Enjoy PC nerds.
Pitiful. The only PlayStation releases these day are on PC. The company has truly lost its way.

Ooooh finally! I'm in.
Why dahell wasn't this at the showcase
@RBMango The only PC announcements in the showcase were of games that were also upcoming for PS5. They did a similar thing in the 2021 showcase (Uncharted was PS5/PC and the other PC announcements were announced elsewhere instead).
Though I am surprised this wasn't announced at Summer Game Fest, perhaps others are there instead like Demon's Souls and Ghost of Tsushima.
Removed - trolling/baiting
Hopefully if it successful we get another rachet this gen.
Of course I see the news first on Hot UK Deals…
These ports exist only to keep Digital Foundry in business.
Nice. This is one of the games on my "reasons to buy a PS5" list. Now I can just play it on PC.
Great news, hopefully PC players enjoy! I'm sure it'll be an awesome experience!
any reason why Dual Sense features cannot be implemented wirelessly on PC?
People crying about PC ports again
Pretends to be shocked
@Ralizah This comment is exactly what I mean. Hopefully a lot of potential PS customers are going the pc route.
I'm waiting for Ghost of Tsushima - want to replay that on the Deck
It likely won't sell that good.
2.5+ years after PS5 release. I think that’s about the sweet spot given PS5 players are getting it as part of their extra subscription already.
I've never played Ratchet and Clank before so I'll definitely be picking this up when it hits PC.
Let's remember to keep the discussion constructive here please, no need to be calling anyone 'fanboy', 'fake', etc
@Jacko11 The reason we are crying is because Playstation isn’t currently really investing in new PS5 exclusives. Every announcement except Spider-Man is also PC. In addition, we all believed the marketing from super SSD speed not being possible any where else (the rifts). I think the outrage from a part of the PS community including me is that the showcase was a total disappointment (leadership is also really out of touch)
Edit: for me also the lack of communication regarding PSVR2 games is really hurting the image of Sony/PlayStation. The dislike I have for current leadership is also pushing me to the other side for next generation (team Green for all third party, the exclusives for next PS and ofcourse Team N for their exclusives… but primary console for third party will definitely be team green)
@BeerIsAwesome
Yes and have you been able to play it someplace other than Ps5?
Have they said how much it will be on Steam?
Currently £70 on PSN and considering the retailer/storefront percentage cut it should actually be more expensive on Steam. 😜
There's absolutely nothing wrong with bringing playstations games to PC, they are still console exclusive and don't come to PC until over 12 months after release so there's still enough incentive to own a playstation console. In fact Sony's PC strategy seems to not be harming their consoles sales, especially as the PC sales of these ports are quite low compared the milliona upon millions they are still selling on console. Sony are seeing PC as a quick cash injection.
Also Microsoft put their games on PC day one and no one moans about them. I can't believe people are moaning about Sony making more money whilst letting more people get to play their games. Microsoft are hailed for bringing their games to more people and systems, yet sony are slammed, I just don't get it.
@Sanquine I have a PC anyway. Updating it is a default for me. So, yeah, the more of these games come to PC, the less I need a PS5.
That'll especially be true when the new Horizon game and DLC hit PC in a year or two.
Assuming these ports are functional, of course. Which most of them have been.
@Sanquine yet Jim has come out and said that pc players will need to wait 2-3 years for games if they ever ports over.
This will be tenth game out of a few hundreds exclusive and people cry their hearts out.
@Neverwild @UltimateOtaku91 Microsoft is very upfront about it. You can expect that everything is pc.
We believe in generations was also said by Jim Ryan. Than he did a reverse and almost all PS5 exclusives were also on PS4 (and now most PS5 exclusives are on PC 😅).
Had you told me 15 years ago that people would never stop obsessing over their gaming device of choice I would have believed you
@CaptD There's no price on Steam yet but most likely be £50 direct from there or around £35 on CD Keys.
Excited for all the sharing of new and wacky mods.
@Neverwild good thing Sony releases like 2-3 games a year max which makes it easy to wait.
@Sanquine PlayStation are upfront about it, they said the PC games will come much later after the console release.
And you can't blame them for reversing that generations decision, Covid put a halt on supply and caused stock shortages for both playstation and xbox, why release a game on PS5 if people were struggling to get hold of one? It made sense for both of them to continue releasing games on the last gen consoles otherwise they would of took a heavy loss leaving out 100+ million players who were stuck with the PS4 still.
The ones moaning back then we're the lucky ones to get a PS5, all those PS4 users were grateful to sony for sticking with them.
Finally they started sharing their games to PC. No one should be forced to buy a ps5 just for exclusives.
Ooof I only bought this game along with my PS5 a few days ago but I'm happy to swallow the L and buy the PC port too while keeping the physical copy as a souvenir. I guess I shouldn't be buying any PS5 exclusives released earlier than 2022 from now on. Can't wait to experience this game with all the bells and whistles when it hits Steam less than two months later.
Imagine wasting resources and time on the PC ports that no one buys and cares about. It's obvious that Jimbo is a spy sent by Microsoft.
Again Valve are the real winners of this generation. Both PlayStation and Xbox have succumbed to Steam yet Valve gets to keep an iron grip on Half-Life Alyx, it's as if they understand the importance of exclusives to attract and lock down customers.
@UltimateOtaku91 COVID started in 2020 (in the Netherlands). Games like GT7 and GOW were released in 2022. With Sony taking so long to develop any game the plan to release these games on PS4 was surely made before COVID hit. But we agree to disagree right?
@Sanquine Yes and Covid caused stock shortages all the way through 2021 and most of 2022, it's only been the last 8-10 months that Stock has sorted itself out and Sony have actually been top of sales charts these last several months as well, so now you will start seeing games being Playstation 5 only.
It's the same with Microsoft and third party developers, you will now start to see a decline in last gen versions.
This year alone there's going to be way more current gen only games such as Forspoken, Dead Space Remake, Star Wars Jedi 2, Final Fantasy 16, Spiderman 2, Redfall, Starfield, Alan Wake 2, Alone in the Dark Remake etc
Any new games that have started development within the last 12 months will be this gen only.

The real PS5 exclusives are the friends we made along the way.
Considering how little they sell on PC, I still don't think it's a good strategy, but we'll see.
But, but, but, I thought you couldn't run this on a PS4 or anything but the amazing SSD of the PS5 even though it was clearly just a faster loading loading screen and nothing more than that? Now it's on PC with no Gen4 nvme minimum spec headlined. Hmmm...
Can't wait for another stuttery game from ps on pc. Not to mention they are doing it again. Skipping the first game with the "expensive pretty one" just like uncharted.
Imagine most have already and will continue to pirate there anyway. Meanwhile only 1st party we hear about are the live service titles which is probably more pc centric then console as well
@naruball More people playing your games is somehow not a good strategy. Okay then.
@RedRiot193 not what I said, but nice bait.
I wish they had a team working on a new Ratchet & Clank game.
I’ve played them all to date but would quite happily play a new one every year and never get bored.
@BeerIsAwesome You're right, a year ago it was announced Horizon Zero Dawn had sold 2.4 million on PC, at £30 (probably cost more) a copy that would be £72 million in revenue, that's not bad for an old game just by releasing in on PC 3 and half years after.
@naruball Then please clarify
@BeerIsAwesome not sure if these numbers are accurate, but we saw how something like Sackboy didn't sell well at all, unlike God of War that did better. I think Ratchet is closer to Sackboy than to God of War or Horizon. It'd be nice if Sony released any PC numbers. There must be a reason they haven't (unless they did and I missed it).
I played this game day 1 and beat it within 2 weeks. Now more people are able to enjoy this awesome game. Why would this piss anyone off?
What happened to it only being possible with the power of PS5’s SSD 👀
£49.99 on Steam and still £69.99 on PS Store.
Anyone still buying these games on console at £70 really ought to re-evaluate their spending habits because you're straight up getting fleeced by Sony.
@truerbluer Console gamers love being ripped off and exploited. Perfect example is the people defending the $70 price like Sony needs that money when they are making record profits,tv shows,pc ports,ps plus, etc
These corporations look at console players as piggybanks willing to buy anything and everything.
@naruball to be fair Sackboy didn't sell well on Playstation either and it's PC port was broken at launch. I'd imagine even modest sales will more than cover the cost of porting these games and Sony must be happy to continue
@NEStalgia
Have you been able to play it anywhere else?
@nessisonett have you been able to play it anywhere else?
@truerbluer They joys of becoming a "lifestyle brand" targeting uninformed high-income people with self-esteem issues with overpriced products marketed to evoke a "premium" image.
Same way Bose has been able to sell $1200 speaker systems consisting of speakers barely worth $500 for decades. Apple brought that to tech. Though Apple retains that image they've actually changed their strategy and now feature plenty of low price points and are often a high value option rather than a lifestyle option, they're still perceived as lifestyle. Sony, and really Nintendo, have both moved into that space now. They know their market and target their aspirational fantasies.
Though you'd think actively highlighting how inferior their console is next to PC, like they're doing with these ports targeting the features of the ultra high-end GPUs, would work against that brand they've cultivated.
@Neverwild According to this article, yes it will be on PC. And is not stipulating PS5-equivalent storage speeds. Meaning the whole "only possible with PS5 SSD" was smoke blown up our rears. Which plenty of us called out at the time, but of course were attacked for.
@carlos82 yeah, that's why I'd like to see some official numbers. We'd have a better view, though again, one needs to put things into perspective. On PC games cost less and Sony gets a smaller cut. So 1m sold on ps5 are not the same as 1m sold on PC.
Considering how it devalues the brand to some extent, I'm not sure it's a great strategy, but I could be wrong. I think it was part of xbox's downfall. I don't see it happening with Sony, but it could hurt it long term.
@BeerIsAwesome Yep and as it is currently it's still a sound business strategy, Sony are putting their games on PC once sales have halted on playstation, the longer a game is in demand on their console the longer it will take to release on PC, at the moment it's a quick cash injection by reviving dead sales by putting them on another platform but yeah eventually that wait time will get reduced.
I wonder if people will also kick up a fuss once you can stream playstation games on mobile? Actually these games hitting PC are technically already on PC via streaming with the ps plus premium membership. Those wanting to play HFW on PC can already do so right now 🙄
@NEStalgia to be fair, it hasn't come out yet. We don't know how well it'll perform. So perhaps it wasn't all smoke, but most likely an exaggeration.
@truerbluer what are you talking about? Not only did the game come out years ago (price goes down with time), but it's been on sale several times and can be enjoyed through plus for free.
It's not like it launched on ps5 and pc at the same time and it cost less on PC.
hold on.
they told us that this game can only run on a high specced SSD. will this game have a pc requirement that includes an SSD with read speeds of at least 5,500MB/s for it to function? or did they water down the experience to make it more accessable to the pc market at large? or was it an outright lie that the game required a state of the art SSD (at the time) for it to function? we need answers!
So another ps5 game is going to the pc. Why does it matter so much? It makes no difference to me if pc gamers get to play ps5 games a year or 2 after they have launched. I'm mostly very happy with my £450 console and how it performs but i doubt i'd be happy with the ports pc gamers sometimes get when they have shelled out at least 3 times the cost of a ps5. I'm getting to the point in my life where i'm finding it harder to give a ***** about silly, trivial things that wont affect me.
@NEStalgia haha i just posted a comment with the same sentiments. i find this pretty interesting. very curious to see what the pc requirements are for this game, but something tells me that it will run on any old HDD
@NEStalgia
Bur you havent been able to play it anywhere else.
Lots of things can happen in 2 years.
We all know you hate playstation so dont know why you are here all the time.
@naruball I'm comparing like-for-like digital retail stores at their normal selling price.
Steam has it at £49.99: https://store.steampowered.com/app/1895880/Ratchet__Clank_Rift_Apart/
PS Store has it at £69.99: https://store.playstation.com/en-gb/product/EP9000-PPSA01474_00-RATCHETCLANKRIFT
I'm not including temporary discounted prices or subscription addons here. If you want to use these as a price win over PC just remember PC owners can just as easily pull out the piracy card and end the comparison right there.
@Neverwild No, I don't hate PS. If you think that, you clearly haven't followed my long and expensive history buying ps stuff, including 3 Viti, both VR kits, and am one of the few even here that bought an Edge lol. I do hate the current leadership and direction of PS though where it's clearly an abusive relationship with captive customers and the company no longer serves the customer, the customer is expected to serve the company.
@Porco @naruball Yeah, technically the min spec isn't posted yet, but with no disclaimer about storage speeds, it's pretty unlikely this won't be able to run on any pc storage, just with longer loading times. Maybe "exaggeration" but "can't run" and " doesn't load as fast" is a bigger stretch than here exaggeration. It's kind of slimy.
That's a big surprise. Ratchet & Clank has always been exclusive to Playstation consoles, plus Rift Apart was the poster child for PS5's special SSD. I'd love to see the system requirements for it, though it's unlikely to run on my ageing PC without some upgrades.
@Shad361 does ps5 games like spiderman that have been ported load any faster on PC? Because I haven't bothered to look myself to know.
Well let’s just hope this port isn’t nearly as bad as TLOU Part 1 was. Every other PC Port seems to be good. That was the first and only screw up so far.
I sure as hell won’t be in a hurry to get the next systems that release.
The PS5 has been a joke in comparison to all previous consoles. Don’t come at me with sell it then. I bought a PS5 day 1 based off of previous experiences, and expected similar experiences but it definitely hasn’t felt that way, so I’ll correct course when the PS6 launches. Unless, they really really sell me on it. I bought numerous systems for years day one, but going forward, they are going to have to really sell me on it.
I think the PS5 will crossgen into the PS6 gen longer than we’ve currently experienced and Sony will not push the limits of their games anymore to ensure that the games work easily across multiple platforms, especially PC.
@truerbluer again. How many times has it been on discount on ps5? Your comparison makes zero sense. If someone who owns a ps5 wanted to buy the game, one had plenty of chances to do so for less than that over the years.
https://psprices.com/region-us/game/4546677/ratchet-clank-rift-apart
It's gone as low as 29.39 USD and it's currently available on Amazon for 49.82. You're cherry picking and it shows.
Also, the fact that you're comparing a subscription and price cuts with piracy is really telling.
Can't believe people are still getting salty over PC ports. Some even calling it bad strategy. Well considering they keep releasing to PC, I think its fair to say they are seeing a good return on it otherwise why would they bother?
I genuinely want to get this on PC as well for the mods and ultra wide support.
@naruball You're the one being disingenous with your comparison, "It's gone as low as 29.39 USD" but your own link shows the game is currently $69.99
And the irony of saying I'm cherry picking when you're listing Amazon prices for physical copies when I clearly stated I made a like-for-like digital retail store comparison. The Amazon prices are worthless to a Digital PS5 owner.
If I wanted to cherry pick I would have just listed any number of legitimate cd-key sellers for PC that price games even lower than on Steam.
I mentioned piracy because everyone that has a PC has that option available to them. It's entirely up to them whether their conscience allows them to make use of this. Consoles will never have PC beat when it comes to digital game pricing unless they incorporate DRM that prevents piracy.
I honestly don't know why I bothered getting a PS5...
Why was this important news about one of the best PS5 exclusives not mentioned in the Showcase, only to be released 5 days later with little to no fanfare ?
Oh, wait : "they didn't know" or "they weren't ready"... pffft riiiight.
I guess for Jim games like kitty pirates and foam fighting are more important going forward...
I don't care with PC gaming.
As long it still have PS5 version, I will play the PS5 version.
Just started this on ps plus, think ill put this down a wait for the
PC version to come out with unlocked frame fates and M+K support.
@TrickyDicky99 like i said i dont care.
@TrickyDicky99 there are plenty of great games that i want coming. I dont have time to play everything that gets released. I'm not a pc gamer so i'm not bothered about sony exclusives being released on their platform and i care even less about what you think of me..
You guys still surprised by 2 year old PC ports?
I mean, this is nothing new anymore. PS5 SP games will end up on PC after a couple of years and GAAS will be day 1.
Complaining about this every single time is pointless and a bit stupid at this point.
Hopefully it's fully verified for the Deck and is a good port.
@TrickyDicky99 👍
Can't wait for them to announce it works on hdds 😂
Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart is 60 on Steam and 80 in PSN. I guess Green Man Gaming, Fanatical etc. will have it for preorder cheaper.
Also, and that is a literally question, how games that were possible only on the super fast PS5 SSD are now playable in mechanical drives and in the Steam Deck's SD card?
Seems like Final Fantasy 16 is now the one and only true PS5 exclusive.
I bought this not too long ago. Now I know how some of you guys feel lol but honestly what’s the worse that can happen? Day & date like Xbox? Personally I wouldn’t really care so long as Sony keeps the games coming
The Shawn Layden era has finally ended, and the Jim Ryan era is just beggining.
this proves that Rift Apart was completely possible on ps4
Well hopefully PC players enjoy it. I didn't. I'm not complaining about PC ports at all PC players do deserve to play games console gamers get, console players get to play it on console as their preferred place to play them, not everything is about exclusivity when it comes to money. Us console gamers like console, end of story it being on PC isn't a bad thing.
I use PC and Console for different things. 99% of the time console. Usually mods for PC and if I don't care for them and want a physical copy likely which for most console games I do I'll go console but if it's something in particular I see a need for PC.
That and well piracy while yes there is no PS5 emulator that's fully functional the games being on PC gives companies a reason to say 'well it is available to players so there is no excuse' when it is available on Steam/Epic or otherwise then well emulating the console.
Sure I don't have a reason to own an Xbox or a PlayStation besides a handful of games but I don't even care for most PS4/5 2016+ heavy hitters anyways I'll be honestly and own up to that, Sony kills off the studios I do care about/some changes aren't for me personally and I go to Nintendo and play my third parties on PS4/Xbox One anyway if I see a copy for each console. Take this from yes a PlayStation 2+ owners onward, encase people think I'm a Nintendo fan I wasn't and I use all consoles for different reasons nowadays I still buy old PlayStation games from 1-3/PSP/Vita I still use my PS4 regularly.
The thing is for me with Rift Apart though it felt like it barely used the hardware, Crack in Time was more impressive on a HDD in 2009 and it had aftermath, in progress and fixed reality moments as well as ship level select sectors almost like No Man's Sky in a way with it's small sectors/galaxies just well without the large universe scale of that game (also the only entry in the series to not be 'safe' and fans love it still to this day but we get safe entries since then for the traditional Ratchet games features/structure even though it's praised not hated so it feels odd to backtrack and the spin-off experimental titles on PS3 were just that multiplayer focused ones for Sony's wishes besides well Fuse also being similar but PS3/360).
So how Crack in Time is loved yet we never saw that style again makes me question what Insomniac thinks of 'going back to the old again' when they have aspects of it but it's very much Tools of Destruction (standard Ratchet, weapon skill tree) again more so then what Crack in Time offered of features (ship segments, charge boots which Rift Apart focuses on in the Monk level with Kit's introduction, mods to 3 weapons/no weapon skill tree, the moons as bonus levels, I mean both games have a level with an arena but Crack in Time more so has just the arena as the goal which Rift Apart also does it isn't multiple paths like Tools was, swapping characters on the other side of the galaxy, Clank has very interactive elements in the puzzle areas even if Rift Apart's is kind of like 2016 reimagining, so how it borrows a lot from Crack in Time around it then it's main core is interesting to me).
Size Matters had Dayni Moon a day/night transition planet at certain points on the PSP in 2007. Even Gran Turismo tries to push for dynamic day and night like Metropolis Street Racer on the Dreamcast aka before Project Gotham Racing 1 on Xbox was a refinement of it did city accurate time and date to even Test Drive Le Man or Grid with 24 minute Le Man many things of the past do things, current gen says 'look we can do it now' while others are too strict or safe and we don't get 'gameplay' innovation we get 'graphics or cloud or other things' innovation instead and the games barely changes. It's clear what it did but hey it's more than Spyro 2 did of low res/high res or a flag change of villain/good guys flags appearing.
I wanted more dynamic elements to the rifts in boss fights (wow to the monk level subsection and back how useful and scripted then dynamic) or levels not forced uses of it in a scripted way it was so wasted. Blizar may have used the segments well of back and forth transitions like Crack in Time but even on grind rails which is really cool almost like shooting enemies in Deadlocked or the gold bolt on Kalebo III with the gates to open but cooler but I didn't play those I watched a let's play at that point onwards to the end (from Useless Podcasts the devs in other positions now) because I was so bored with Rift Apart I didn't play it. I still bought it though of course just didn't play it much.
But Rift Apart doesn't really go beyond. I can tell they didn't. Many games have dynamic 'player input' design that makes them feel smart or like it matters. Rift Apart is so scripted it's really boring at this point in gaming. I can place a portal wherever I want in Portal. That's the level of I should work out what to do but for rifts not exactly a portal gun just that level of players doing what they want to in levels to work things out or the game having a timer to transition between things like the day night level even if it is scripted somewhat too but still. Like if we had a final boss or a few with 3 rifts cycling I'd be ok with that it's constantly switching assets and areas to go between. That's what I wanted to see but we didn't get that at all.
But then again the coolest things fans come up with doesn't happen in the dev world because it requires effort to attempt I understand that but even still it does boring scripted segments too and sick to death of them. Like even the Uncharted 2 train segment is more impressive then Rift Apart and it's on a route and moves along as you go. Do something more interesting. Actually show me more than graphics or better lighting with ray tracing show me gameplay that can't be done on current gen hardware with that hard drive, CPU with good loading times it can offer and RAM to allow for beautiful worlds that support more dynamic gameplay but no we don't get that just the same structured approach over and over the games have done for years and playing it safe, give me more dynamic levels developers. Give me good gameplay that makes me impressed not see through it immediately. I mean there is appealing to fans and fans saying 'hey we would like to see new things we don't need the nostalgia/back on track Insomniac please take a risk with it I'm open to you doing that.
Even if they literally had more than 10 months to a few years (besides oh we make marvel games now but even with Sunset Overdrive or Fuse or Resistance it felt like Ratchet games sometimes still were an after thought and a milking of the series besides their sometimes hit sometimes miss execution and All For One had to be made because Sony wanted co-op and online support titles on PS3 so that is that and it was just dragged along till they could make one when that game came out then with Tools or Crack or another.
Even if Resistance 2 had bad COD simplification when the audience didn't want that and why appeal to an audience with an alternate war setting if COD MW was modern? Why would people care about the gameplay changes like how dumb was that, 3 was better with their unique Ratchet like gameplay elements put in which I can forgive because leveling them up in Resistance 3 is so much fun and it felt like a game only Insomniac could make with only Insomniac game mechanics not copy paste other developers mechanics they don't even understand likely just to 'fit in' than 'stand out' with more compelling ideas).
Their 10 month dev time made their games of the past more fun and impressive for the hardware/gameplay/story (also not to mean tons of minigames in the old ones too for 10 months and a small team when Spyro and Song of the Deep had smaller teams that's nuts) even if roughness in areas sure but it's easy to ignore because the rest is still so good of execution. The story for Rift Apart was ok to good but also a cliffhanger because of course they want to string us along for the 5th time now. It's been a decade rap it up Insomniac with the Future saga storyline already.
No Crack in Time ship segments, the armour was less fun than Size Matter customisation, skill tree weapon trees again which sick to death of but oh follow the industry we can't have good weapon mods like Deadlocked or another unique system that's too much effort copy and paste someone else's and whatever average spin that isn't really improving on skill trees by that much, a little but not enough to justify committing to it, it gets boring. Like I said PC players can enjoy it but does it push the hardware, ha no. Unless you want/absolutely love scripted segments not even worth it.
Unless the game requirements say you need a 5,500mbps SSD to play it I think we got duped.
I think any Sony games going to PC is BS. Ported games are just a straight up money grab.
@Tomato_Goose This was done by a external studio through.
@RBMango Sony plan isn't just to dominate the news cycle for a few days, they plan to dominate it for the whole of the summer. My guess is that Sony got a quite a few of these announcements lined up and read to go.
Good for the dev.
Very curious to see hardware reqs — especially SSD and RAM. You either have to store more, load faster, or load less, right?
I cannot express how much of a mistake this is.
This game was the showcase of the PS5. This here is the murder of the PS6.
@belmont "Seems like Final Fantasy 16 is now the one and only true PS5 exclusive"
You mean console exclusive. Cause that is also coming to PC at some point.
@Worlock_ed
The work around for Returnal was to mandate an absolute crap ton of RAM.
Ratchet will probably require 24 gigs of general RAM at the minimum.
Companies really need to start using Direct Storage on PC.
@GreatAuk
It won’t.
What it will require is a ton of RAM in your rig though. That’s how Returnal got around the memory bandwidth issues on HDD equipped PCs.
With all this said, it is pretty clear that Sony and Insomniac’s marketing of the game and the PS5’s SSD was a bit misleading.
If the game required Direct Storage it would still apply and be truthful. Since Direct Storage is the PC’s answer to the Series X and PS5’s SSD utilization that makes them special in most regards.
But since this port won’t require Direct Storage most likely, that means that this game could have been done on PS4 with some proper optimization and downgrades.
But like I said in another post, the way they’ll get around not using Direct Storage coupled to a NVME drive on PC is to require a ton of RAM even for lowest settings. That’s how Returnal was. You load in more data in RAM to compensate for memory bandwith limitations.
@truerbluer
Just do what I do. Maintain a backlog and wait for sales.
@GreatAuk
It’s not just the SSD that makes the PS5 and Xbox Series systems special.
It’s their unique compression algorithms and custom memory management units that made them unique until relatively recently.
Direct Storage (part of Windows 11) is the answer to that issue for PCs. It’s based on the Xbox Series X’s compression/decompression APIs and brings that to PC games.
The issue is that not enough developers are leveraging it. Weirdly enough Forspoken is probably the most well known game on PC that can leverage DirectStorage. It basically rids the game of traversal studder (a common issue on modern PC games) and dramatically improved load times with the same SSD.
@Krysus
For me it was cost.
Building another PC back in 2020 was prohibitively expensive due to the GPU shortage.
And even today it’s still ridiculous how both nVidia and AMD price their latest GPUs.
I’m looking at building a basic starter PC soon. But chances are it’ll have a used RTX 3060 12gig or a 6700XT in it paired with a mid range Intel Core I5.
Because nVidia must have lost their damn minds with the 4060Ti pricing and what you get for the investment.
@NEStalgia i have the Edge and think it’s still uncomfortable and only used it a few times , it’s been charged almost as much as played. I agree the current leaders of PS leave a lot to be desired. As for Ratchet and Clank, i have beaten it twice and still find it the only game to truly show off my consoles and LG oled. I enjoyed the game and it’s one of my favorite PS5 only games. But i think it’s funny how Sony games going to PC later somehow make it ok but going day 1 for the same players on PC’s to enjoy is bad. Oh right console war sales. That’s still a thing in 2023? Man you have had a day on Push. 😀
@OrtadragoonX direct storage on Xbox is their advantage but most dev’s don’t use it. I am sure in 2023 and forward MS first party will start to use it. PC should be on that like yesterday. It’s been reported unreal engine 5 will use Xbox’s direct storage.
Haven't felt the need to upgrade from PS4 and this delays the need even longer. Played all the latest Sony exclusives on my PS4 (GOW Ragnarok) Played Hogwarts Legacy & now can play Ratchet on PC.
i can't imagine it playing well on normal hdd's. i wouldn't be shocked if a ssd is required to play it.
@BlueBeemer Those are some really broad, general statements.
I played exclusively on consoles for years, but jumped over to PC after I got turned off by the "HD" consoles running games poorly, and the Wii... being the Wii.
For me, it's about the choice to turn the settings down and keep hitting 60fps on mid-range or outdated hardware, and about the massive back catalogue that carries over from past generations, often getting better when installed on newer hardware.
For others, it may be about having the best graphics, installing loads of mods, or even getting into gaming without spending a cent (pick up a PC on the side of the road, and start your library with some Epic/GOG giveaways).
That's the beauty of PC: its flexibility. "Have it your way."
I know that there are many who are firmly in the PC or the console camp, but I'm not convinced that the two markets are exclusive, with minimal overlap.
EDIT: Oh, and I've since picked up a few used/discounted consoles, to catch up on some of the better exclusives that I missed... though I usually go with the PC version if there is one.
@NEStalgia You're absolutely bang on about the 'only possible with SSD' - it was clearly a lie and was totally debunked by Jon Burton (of TT fame). There was no reason this couldn't have been on the PS4 apart from marketing issues.
@BlueBeemer I mentioned being able to get good performance on outdated hardware, as well as picking up a few old consoles... not sure how you got "hardware enthusiast" from any of that.
But yeah, I'm totally a super 1337 gamer, with my 8-year-old PC (3 teraflops, baby!) and Xbox One S.
(Sorry, I'll dial down the sarcasm now.)
This obviously doesn't prove a wider trend, but it seems clear to me that many, many people have both a gaming-capable PC and a recent console (most often a Switch, but PS4/5 is also common). I'm going both by online chatter, and by people I know.
@ItsBritneyB_tch @LazyLombax @Americansamurai1 I'd love to get another Ratchet & Clank game, especially with the teaser they gave us at the very end of Rift Apart.
@Ryne-Gaia @RedRiot193 The Last of Us: Part 1's port was handled by a different 3rd party.
The team behind Rift Apart's port (Nixxes) has a flawless record, the game should run smoothly at launch.
@knowles2 Where do you think Sony is saving these surprise reveals for, Summer Game Fest? Or the rumored 2nd showcase in September?
@KidRyan Spiderman had loads of issues day one. And STILL has issues. No such thing as a flawless record on pc to begin with.
@RedRiot193 My bad, thought they did. Thanks for correcting me.
@LazyLombax Hmm possibly! We shall see in due time.
