Hogwarts Legacy has already been selling extremely well with its current-gen versions, and now the game's last-gen release is here to kick things up a gear. WB Games' open world RPG has shot straight back to the top of the UK's physical charts after it finally arrived on PS4, preventing Star Wars Jedi: Survivor from a second week at number one.
While Cal Kestis has to settle for second place, Dead Island 2 has been knocked down too, now residing in third. FIFA 23 is also down at number five, but WWE 2K23 has returned to the top 10 at number seven. It's similar news for Grand Theft Auto V, which is back in eighth place, while Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 clings on at number nine.
Here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 6th May, 2023
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
- Dead Island 2
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- FIFA 23
- Super Mario Odyssey
- WWE 2K23
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Expected! Also expecting it to do it again in July when it comes to Switch. Congratulations to Avalanche Software who had to go through a rough development with leaks all the way back in 2018, then silence, then the JKR cancelling and death threats. Good on them for sticking with it all to make a great, and successful, game.
Probably all those extra sales from Mortal Kombat owners
I’m pretty sure the Switch version will also dominate the sales chart.
WHO IS STILL BUYING GTA V AND MARIO KART 8!!!!???? 😅 Anywho go Hogwarts keep on kicking butt ^__^
@Keyblade-Dan My young nephews friends & their other friends at school 😂, you are not cool if you don't play GTA.
@themightyant That depends if it doesn't get cancelled like Midnight Sun's did recently.
@KaijuKaiser I mean Incendio could easily replicate Scorpions classic Toasty Fatality 😅
@UltimateOtaku91 Perhaps. Though considering how good the PS4 and XBO ports appear to be, I think they can reduce everything further for Switch.
It's also likely related to the market size. i.e I'd expect FAR more people to buy Hogwarts on Switch than Midnight Suns which gives much more incentive to getting it working.
Congrats GTA V! It's always nice to see underdogs succeed.
Goes to show that abandoning those 117 million PS4 consoles is still not a smart move. We might still see more cross-Gen support for a while longer, although this “release last Gen later” is likely to become the norm going forward.
@themightyant yea, if I recall Midnight Suns didn’t sell as expected, they didn’t have the budget to sink in a switch port. This game has the money to go through with the port, given its surprising sales numbers.
Diablo 4 coming for that #1 spot soon.
@Tharsman I'm not completely against cross gen games. I don't want cross-gen to hold back the truly ground breaking next gen titles, but a careful balance is needed.
The reality is most have the sort of scope that could easily be accommodated on lesser last-gen hardware. Plus building for a larger install base, and more potential sales, may increase the budget. Horizon Forbidden West would likely would have had a smaller budget game if it it was just PS5 only for example. Especially for games earlier in a new gen. Though we should be getting towards the end of that now.
Ultimately I like the "delay the last gen version" approach, not just to maximise the next gen versions and give some incentive to upgrade, but also allow them to optimise the last gen versions too. I hope this will also the be the case now for more games, and for the next gen in 2027/8/9/? when we likely have the same issue.
@themightyant I expect next Gen’s cros-Gen period to be even longer than this, potentially the entire generation maybe. There might be some titles that are exclusive to the next Gen, but for the most part, expect almost everything to be a lot more flexible, especially on the Xbox front. MS is intentionally building their strategy around scalability.
@Tharsman it’s going to be significantly less than 115mil consoles, as you would assume most of the 35mil ps5’s were ps4 owners.
Plus most new games that come out sell better on the ps5, even when ps4 versions release at the same time.
I think the usual yearly sports games etc will get the longer cross release as is normal, but the bigger AAA games will go current gen only.
@PsBoxSwitchOwner even if you assumed these users just stirred their PS4s on a glass case to never be played again, or set them on fire, that still leaves over 80 million PS4s out there.
But truth is: most people sell or trade in their PS4s, that in turn are sold to new users that will want PS4 games. Of course they won’t all buy the same games, but it’s a huge install base that won’t be easy to ignore.
Won’t be shocked if we see at least two more years of CoD on PS4.
@Tharsman Possibly. This gens consoels are certainly more balanced with decent CPUs and super fast SSDs. But I still think there should be games pushing more than graphical fidelity that would need new hardware. Especially better CPUs.
@Splat maybe, but those lists are outdated, by showing physical sales, while physical sales are like 10% from all sales?
@themightyant I honestly think we reached a breaking point on what can be realistically done with graphics and budgets.
I’m more interested in what can be done with additional CPU horse power for AI and simulation. More characters on screen (animation of multiple entities is more of a CPU thing than a GPU thing), more destructive environments, more realistic NPC behaviors, more physics and destructible environments, etc.
@Tharsman Oh I agree. It's more down to teams skill, engine and budget. That's why I think CPU might be the thing that is pushed next... which like you I find more interesting and would need beefier CPUs.
But I suspect they will keep chasing graphical shine and go down the full path traced route, RT etc. Snooze.
Totally expected. I’m sure we’ll be seeing Hogwarts in most of these charts for a while. The game could be the next evergreen title. It’s been a while since we’ve had a game that’s appealed to the so many demographics in such a profound way and been a critically praised title… We shall see if Jedi Survivor can cling onto second place against Hogwarts next week since we all know Zelda will be first place.
Congrats Avalanche and JK Rowling, the world supports you both! <3
A great game, glad to see it doing well against an attempted boycott!
@kyleforrester87
You are the greatest poster on this site.
Always have a brilliant quip based on previous news articles.
Live long and prosper my friend.
@OrtadragoonX why, thank you! Although, fortunately for us all, there are countless more intelligent folk here who make much more meaningful contributions!
Would play well with PSMove controllers
