The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom has — unsurprisingly — recorded the UK's biggest physical game launch of the year so far, comfortably beating what Hogwarts Legacy managed in its first week by more than 50 per cent. It took top spot from the aforementioned title, and it's probably going to stay there for the coming weeks. As the sequel pretty much takes over social media, FOMO will surely fuel more sales of the Nintendo title.
Tears of the Kingdom has recorded the best week-one physical sales of any Zelda game in the UK's history, and no PS5, PS4 game has been able to compete with it. Hogwarts Legacy, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, and FIFA 23 all make way for it, while Dead Island 2 slips to sixth. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild even received a large sales bump; there were enough boxed purchases to see it land in eighth. With Sony even highlighting the game's launch, it is the sort of release where the entire industry kind of stops for a second to take note of the experience.
These sorts of games don't come around too often — the last would probably be Elden Ring — so it's no surprise to see it topping sales charts. Expect the same to happen globally too. Here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 13th May 2023
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Star Wars Jedi: Survivor
- FIFA 23
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Dead Island 2
- Super Mario Odyssey
- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Minecraft Legends

Well lets be honest, buy a Switch and get maybe one or two games a year, amongst all the drivel. Hated, hated breath of the wild, Immortals Fenix Rising was more fun.
I do actually have it twice now as the physical copy turned up today but I already bought digital, so back it goes. Pretty sure that'll put Hogwarts back on top.
Bit of a let down by The Game Collection not getting it to me on Friday. Not the end of the world, but when you're competing against digital you have to get pre-orders delivered on launch day.
I still wouldn't buy a Switch for it.
The only games that would make me buy a Switch are Xenoblade 3 and SMT 5, if it they would run in 4K 60 fps.
@Wheatly yeah understood, and they have been good in the past, although I didn’t get a dispatch email until 1-2pm on launch day so did they even get it out the day before?
When there is not much to buy for Switch it’s logical that a new good game is rocketing like that.
@kyleforrester87 Weird, eh? I also only got the dispatch email from TheGameCollection on the day of release, but thankfully it did arrive that day. I'd checked the previous night on my order history, and it did say "shipped" on the Thursday.
I can't lie, I am seriously considering buying a Switch, having never played a Zelda in my life or ever owned a Nintendo
The hype is getting to me 😅
@RainbowGazelle That's what I expected tbh, I figured they just got the dispatch email out late but the game itself would have been shipped for delivery that day. I've had them turn up an hour after the dispatch email before. Happy to put it down to Royal Mail, but doesn't change the fact TGC will be getting the game sent back in this case.
I was absolutely hooked over the weekend on it! Though I did have a scare as I thought one of the main story missions was bugged at first. Long story short it wasn't bugged thankfully and all I had to to do was interact with something that to be fair gave absolutely no sign of looking interactable.
Regardless congrats to the Zelda team. I can't imagine how tough it was to get this thing running on a Switch. It drops frames...a lot but the fact that it's never bad enough to ruin the experience and that the game never crashes under the pressure is very impressive.
Fully deserves it place, best game released this year so far and will be near impossible to beat.
@Slippship ...as a lifetime Zelda fan I loved BOTW but can appreciate why people aren't so keen. I spent 975 hours on BOTW ....and deleted Immortals after 3 hours.
@Soulless666 That years alone already had Fire Emblem Engage, Kirby, Metroid Prime Remastered, Bayonetta Origins and Advance Wars 1+2 before TotK, and that's only the first party stuff.
Not sure if that counts as "not much"
@Atreus97 ....do it ! And buy BOTW, Skyward Sword. There's also rumours of The Wind Waker and Twilight Princess releasing on Switch too, 2 absolute gems there. And get Metroid Prime Remastered......Switch purchase justified 😅
@kyleforrester87 when that happens to me i email them, usually they give me £5 worth of points, say something like you took the day off wanting to play it since you pre ordered it you expect it to arrive on the day, always works for me 😉
@Daleaf Yeah I hear you, I dunno - don't really want to make a fuss or get compensated, just wanted the game on Friday lol.
@kyleforrester87 i think its important to let them know though, because they might need to change their couriers if it keeps happening.
It's a truly monumental game. It's just so good. A true juggernaut and the latest game since Elden Ring to get this much hype. Well done Nintendo
The whole weekend was basically spent on it, the times i stopped was when i needed to sleep and eat haha.
@mariomaster96 Not to mention Xenoblade 3 Future Redeemed. Nintendo has been keeping people busy so far with all these releases
Yeah I got my switch a few months back in a silly Tesco deal. I think I paid about £100, great buy tbh. BOTW was good, but I didn't really max my playthrough as I knew this was coming. Boy is this good, "more of the same" but it's BOTW on drugs. Haha, some of these new features are very impressive. I'm expecting a GOTY for this one.
@KingPev too many bad guys? Zelda was barren and boring for me. Still Nintendo.
Who guess Nintendo haters would come and post on this thread.
That top ten is brutal for everyone but Nintendo really…. EA doing ok and Hogwarts is a beast.
3 RPG's ahead of FIFA and no CoD in sight 😱
This is monumental for gaming, it can't happen very often right?
Also, what a year for gaming it's shaping up to be. It feels like the real heart of the industry is back (not the online throwaway stuff or the try-hard releases) this should be celebrated by all, even if not a specific fan of all of the titles releasing.
@Slippship I'm in the minority as well that didn't like Breath of the Wild, but actually liked Immortals Fenyx Rising better. Is it the better game? Not really, but it is far more accessible, and I'm enjoying it as I happen to playing it right now. It doesn't have to be better to be more fun, in my opinion of course.
Not looking to turn this into an argument either just in case somebody wants to throw me under the bus as a Nintendo hater (I own a Switch). I just happen to be somebody who didn't like Breath of the Wild for multiple reasons.
@KilloWertz no arguments, 100 mil or whatever switch owners can't be wrong. I liked ACIII on the Switch, and LA Noire. Heard the new one looks awful when docked on anything other than a 4" screen at 60 yds. Was on thegamer mind. Switch update well overdue with steamdeck out there.
@KilloWertz ...yeah I'm a lifelong Zelda fan and I must admit it took me 3 attempts to 'click' with BOTW after the previous games. When it did click I put nearly 1000 hrs into it. But I do understand why people won't like it
@mariomaster96 If anyone has been feeding me in 2023, it's 100% Nintendo. They've been a roll and we've still got Pikmin 4 coming.
@Slippship Lots of things can be said about Switch, but having few releases during the past 6 years is not one of them.
I read the article and was wondering how there were still so many people buying BotW after 6 years then looked at the list and was like “Oh, a lot of people must have purchased a Switch for TotK and decided to pick up 9 year old Mario Kart and 3 year old ACNH and 5 year old Super Mario while they were at it.” Doesn’t seem like Brexit is hurting Nintendo in the UK any. 😂
@Slippship @Soulless666
crickets chirping
@Soulless666 @Slippship
The Switch has been getting so many interesting exclusives that they've had to double up on them in certain months since last year.
Just this year, we've had a remake of Metroid Prime, a new Fire Emblem, a console-exclusive Square-Enix horror game, TotK, a remake of the first two Advance Wars games, and an expansion to Xenoblade 3 that is a high-quality, 20 - 40 hour experience in its own right. Also stuff I'm less interested in like a remaster of Kirby's Return to Dreamland and that spinoff of Bayonetta. We're getting the spiritual successor to Danganronpa in June and Pikmin 4 July.
Three of these, so far, have scored 91+ on Metacritic. TotK in particular is one of the highest rated games of all time.
@Ralizah and yet not one of interest. To me at least.
@Slippship shrug The console is almost drowning in interesting, high-quality exclusive software. You casually dismissing it doesn't change that fact.
@NielsNL not arguing. All the girls in the house have one, games purchases are something that doesn't happen.
Ive been playing zelda all weekend long. I was playing ng+ on gow but i was not able to put down the controller for nothing! lol
@Ralizah the switch is just a thing that is idolised by Nintenbots. There's absolutely nothing wrong with that and I get it. I just feel you guys deserve so much more. If I had a handheld it would still be a Vita, or a Steamdeck as the choice is still much greater.and varied.
@WallyWest I literally forgot to eat on launch day. I've been struggling with fasting lately, but I've fasted for 20+ hours twice since Friday.
Thanks, Nintendo!
@Slippship "Nintenbots?" Good lord, if you're over the age of 12, you really, really need to touch grass, bro.
@NielsNL variation. Why has MarioKart not changed at all since 64?
@Ralizah I just made it up sat at my desk in the office and made me chortle. Don't know what you mean by touch grass, my rear lawn is walked over everyday. Or was that an attempt at an insult? Sorry I'll be offended in a minute.
@Slippship I was just embarrassed on your behalf by the use of an insult that would make an elementary school child cringe lol.
@Slippship There's nothing wrong with not being into Nintendo. But feigning as through the are hardly any games released on the Switch is just ridiculous. And has already been adequately proven wrong by several other commenters that you've gone out of your way to dismiss.
And then you come out and say something utterly inane like Mario Kart hasn't changed in 20 years. Or even that implication up there that the Vita is better than the Switch. Not really helping your case of presumable impartial fairness.
I didn't really like Breath of the Wild, even though I bought it twice over a period to see if I could get into the game. Playing a few hours of the new game over the weekend, I immediately enjoyed it more. The weapons seem to last longer, there seems to be more direction by design. Will see if it continues to hold my attention, but to me at least it seems a real improvement over the previous game.
@Slippship while the Steamdeck is far more robots, the battery sucks and it’s quite bulky. Granted, you have to be a fan of Nintendo like stuff, but it has the most exclusives and developers have managed to do a lot with the hardware…. It’s starting to feel dated but I still prefer it over my other three consoles. The Vita has aged pretty well. It’s like the WiiU. Under appreciated and obviously didn’t sell very well. It’s a great little device but the Switch is an upgrade
TotK is, so far, absolutely incredible. It goes to show that, for all the arguments of the Switch being weak, creative visuals and strong gameplay are what a game needs to succeed. Not since Elden Ring have I been so enamored with a title early on, and it’s possible the game will surpass that title as Elden Ring did for BotW. Truly incredible.
@Wheatly the words “drivel” was used. But yeah that’s not hating. Whatever fella.
I’m just delighted to see Dead Island 2 still in the top ten!
@Slippship Vita? Its a great console but the Switch is more powerful and has way more games, the Vita is hardly an argument against the Switch especially when its best game in Persona 4 Golden is now on Switch and everything else.
@Atreus97 You should, i did the same after holding off for years just only playing on ps4/5. If you do get a switch your first 3 games should be the zelda games, metroid dread and fire emblem three houses
In my case, I'm lucky that I also have a Series X and Switch.
Since my PS5 started becoming issues(thank you Sony for this low quality system), I'm glad that I'm not doomed.
I had the game delivered on Friday and I honestly cannot put it down. It is that good (at least for me). Nintendo outdid themselves this time.
@Sil_Am this won't happen for a very long time. Even the 'next gen' consoles can barely push upscalled 4k let alone 4k 60.
I have a PS5 and PC (4090) and yes the low res is jarring at first you soon adjust and the game is that good it doesn't matter.
@kyleforrester87
Personally I use either SimplyGames or ShopTo. They've always been consistent in getting games to me for launch day. And sometimes even before. That happens more often with ShopTo. I've been buying from them since 2010.
@Cookiecadet May be good but I'm not into make your own adventure in an endles open world anyway. Much prefer a focused experience. Would totaly jump on a Switch 2 if I can play Xenoblade 3 and SMT 5 with 60 fps at least, let's forget about 4K. That is far resching dream.
I still haven't played BOTW
@Sil_Am for what it’s worth, Breath of the wild was not “make your own adventure”. It had plenty of guidance and direction, it just allowed players to ignore that direction and either do a lot more side content or take shortcuts and go perhaps directly to the final boss, so long one was good enough at the game to face them with next to no HP.
As far as I heard, Tears of the kingdom is even more story focused while still providing that same freedom, maybe much more freedom.
Game of the Year for me so far. Loving it so far and I'm only about 10 hours in.
Anyone who won't play this game because it's not 60fps 4K bla bla bla is missing out. Their loss.
I'm not the biggest Ninty fan, but even I dusted off my switch and set it up in the dock for Tears.
It's phenomenal. For someone like myself who's been playing games over 40 years, and made them for 2 decades, this is a very special game in gaming history, where the majority of games players get to love and experience a truly special creation. This is not a title I will forget, and I bow to the game designers at Nintendo who made this possible, they are at the pinnacle of their craft, and the sales deserve to be as earth shattering as they are.
@WallyWest a friend lent me his switch to try Zelda a few years ago and my first thought was, I can't believe how uncomfortable this device is compared to a vita, which deserved to be 100x more successful. Got to play the game for a bit and though it wasn't my cop of tea, I was impressed by how well it was made and understood the hype. But as a device, imho, the switch is simply awful. Since it's been breaking records, I understand that it couldn't matter any less, but that was just my experience with it.
Enjoying what I played of Zelda. FF16 is not on PC so not on SteamDeck - so hopefully Zelda can carry me over for a bit when away from home.
Steamdeck can take a well deserved break after my obsession with Hogwarts Legacy (seems to still be doing well )
Great for Jedi Survivor... love the game. Alternating from Playing it and Watching Clone Wars on Disney+ all weekend.
4K+RayTracing+HDR+lightsaber = happy Star Wars fan 🙂
But when is it coming out on PS4 or PS5?
When all is said and done Hogwarts Legacy will ship more copies than anything this year baring COD or maybe Fifa. It significantly outsold Elden Ring in it's first week. it's in 2nd place for a 3 month old game that just launched on 10 year old consoles.
Switch physical sales will outsell almost any PS5 game because it's usually cheaper to buy and saves a lot of storage where there is little. I never download switch games.
It's unsurprising. Nintendo are frequently in a league of their own when it comes to the software gaming market.
Ok, but I don't care, I still prefer my Playstation games.
TotK is something special. I don't see myself turning on the PS5 for a long time. BotW was a warning to the rest of the industry, and all the big studios wasted the last five years focusing on service games. Now they're ten years behind Nintendo. It's ironic that the game is made on hardware ten years behind the competition too.
Wild how this site has reacted more to ToTK than Nintendo Life.
Plastic fans.
@Slippship I mean I really liked Immortals Fenyx Rising, don't get me wrong. I even think it's slightly underrated if anything. But more fun than Breath of the Wild? 😅
I think you've surpassed a hot take, this is a smouldering take
@Slippship I'm actually really really sad we won't get another one Fenyx really deserved better marketing. It was basically everything I wanted BOTW to actually be.
@Slippship @Ralizah Both of you are wrong.
Nintendrones
Xbots
Sony Ponies
You're welcome.
What else are you going to buy on a Switch? On PS5 we're drowning in choices and there's PS+ Extra now too. On Switch it's either the once a year outstanding 1st party game, or poorly optimized 3rd party ports.
@Wheatly if I see before paying that someone uses royal mail I'll just order somewhere else. That is if I care about getting it any time soon 😉
@Critonic There is a lot more then "once a year outstanding 1st party game, or poorly optimized 3rd party ports." There is a treasure trove of titles that literally don't see a release on other platforms. PS5 is only drowning in choice cause it piggybacking off the larger library of PS4. If it wasn't for the PS4, the PS5 would be deader than a doorknob
@Tchunga if I understood you it might be funny. Hang onto the fact you have Zelda. I'm pleased for you.
@Slippship I didn’t hate BotW, but I was extremely underwhelmed by it. I truly have no idea what people found to be so life-changing about it. I remain confounded to this day.
Duh!!!, no ***** Watson!!!, Switch is cheaper system hence more people buy it, I mean, you've got the display ("at 60 fps") and else, meanwhile with a PS5 you need a capable telly which add another 1,000 or so, it's logical. There are many "discerning players" who own a Switch and they claim that they cannot play games below 60fps, haha
@Slippship any particular reason you hated BotW? I love BotW
No matter how popular or record-breaking Nintendo games are, I am not getting a Switch just to play a handful of games. Many Nintendo games besides Zelda, are supposed to be multiplayer. I'll pass.
@Slippship I'm not exactly speaking in riddles or meming here. What is there to not understand? 🤔
@danzoEX too much hand holding, barren landscapes, looked no better than ico on PS2. Bad guys that looked like toys we stuck on our fingers. Maybe I just never really clicked with Nintendo, it's pretty much never gripped me, apart from Wii bowling.
@LightningLeader .....yeah 11 playthroughs lol and also just pottering about. Yeah I need to get out more
@Slippship I don't agree with you on the game ...but I love the comment "bad guys that look like toys we stuck on our fingers"....🤣🤣 you win just for that. Genuinely made me laugh
Great for zelda its a classic well done to fellow gamers on Nintendo switch lets be honest if spiderman 2 or halo or even assassins creed, GTA released at same time would zelda stil top charts probably be 2nd behind spiderman 🤔
@KaijuKaiser What, a game that went downhill since Final Fantasy 12, I don't think so somehow! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tears Of The Kingdom I knew would sell well at launch, however selling well doesn't make it that great of a game IMO. But Nintendo fanatics will eat up whatever Nintendo shovels out onto the Switch. This game is nothing more than a cut and paste of Breath Of The Wild using the exact same combat mechanics, running over what seems like an endless map to find "X" shrine that's about as boring as watching paint dry on a wall, while breaking numerous weapons over and over again. Not to mention turning every damned thing you do into a puzzle (like the fusion stuff") every time you turn around. Also, the Switch's weak hardware really shows itself a lot in this game. If anything, The Legend Of Zelda has went down hill and the lack of new game mechanics, memorable dungeons (yeah, remember those?" And quests that feel more like a chore to complete, taking the fun out of the game. While there are many who eat Tears Of The Kingdom up as a great game, sorry I cannot. I just don't believe the game over all is all that great, especially for $70+ tax.
