The massive and currently embattled Embracer Group announced a large-scale restructuring involving a round of layoffs, closures, and cancellations yesterday. Embracer has since tried to clarify things, with Interim executive Matthew Karch providing a rich bounty of quotes in the process, with zingers like "we need to be exploiting Lord of the Rings in a very significant fashion" just the tip of the iceberg.
Obviously, this kind of turmoil at the top could cause chaos for the studios under the Embracer umbrella, or at the very least, could be perceived to. Crystal Dynamics has taken to Twitter to address the concerns of players who might be wondering what effect this might have on in-development titles like the ambitious next Tomb Raider game:
Are you concerned? Should we be? Time will tell, and we'll be sure to keep an eye on the situation as often as we can spare it. It's starting to feel like long enough since we had a great Tomb Raider adventure, so we certainly hope the game turns out well. Of course, because Amazon is bankrolling that one...
After Tomb Raider and Perfect Dark are finished, if those two games are successful, that will improve confidence in Embacer Group and Crystal Dynamics to do a dormant IP like Legacy of Kain and Deus EX without corporate influence.
Oh nice, still on track to being awful then, if the last games are anything to go by. I'd make a great Tomb Raider game on my own in a week if they'd let me.
@Exerion76 I actually really enjoyed Shadow and thought it vastly underrated.
This should be a different interpretation of Lara in any event though. Apparently they are recasting Camilla Luddington as Lara, which usually comes with a change in direction for the series
@Rob_230 I really don't get the hate for Shadow. I liked the tombs in Rise better, and Shadow was better visually. But there's both so similar it's weird how Shadow gets singled out.
I'm not surprised given that Amazon is paying for Tomb Raider. Still, glad that CD will continue on the project without being hampered.
@videoman190 Last November Jason Schreier tweeted that Eidos Montreal is very early in development on a new Deus Ex game 😎
@lankieBD
The least they can do is to do a remaster of the game, with the best parts from the Dreamcast and PlayStation versions.
A current-gen-only remake would also be great.
Im more concerned about Amazon that group has not released anything good yet.
I thought they were working on a new Legacy of Kain as well...
I'm relieved...now we just need confirmation that the game studios for Destroy All Humans, SpongeBob, and Darksiders are safe!
