The highly anticipated demo for Final Fantasy XVI is out right now on PS5, giving everyone a chance to play through a generous chunk of the game's opening act ahead of its full release on the 22nd June. Just to be clear, the exact launch time for the demo is 9AM BST / 10AM CEST / 1AM PT / 4AM ET on the 12th June (today, at the time of writing this article).
You should be able to find the demo on the PlayStation Store's front page, but if you don't see it, you can visit Final Fantasy XVI's page and simply select 'demo' from the '...' drop menu.
The 'Playable Prologue' promises over two hours of gameplay, and your progress will carry through to the full release. This means you can keep your story progress and any items or equipment you've snagged from throughout the demo.
But that's not all. Upon completing the prologue, you'll be able to take on the 'Special Battle Demo', which decks protagonist Clive out with a bunch of Eikonic abilities. Basically, it gives you a taste of what the combat system becomes beyond the prologue. Your progress in the battle-specific demo won't carry through to the full release, however.
All of this information was relayed through the official Final Fantasy XVI pre-launch event, which we were lucky enough to attend last night.
Will you be giving the Final Fantasy XVI demo a shot? Or maybe you'll be waiting for the full game? Unleash your Eikonic abilities in the comments section below.

Literally got on my PS5 as soon as it hit 1am just to download it. Lol
Loving the confidence Square is showing with this one. It’s been a while since a single player FF that wasn’t a remake has been appointment gaming. Let’s go!
I love how Square-Enix handles demos.
Sorry kids, daddy is playing Final Fantasy tonight.
I haven't been following FF 16 much. Please tell me it's not an MMO rpg. Loved FF 15 mostly. I was so devastated when FF 11 and 14 were MMOs and what's up with the FF 13 hate? I thought that trilogy was pretty solid!
Anyone know how much storage the demo takes?
@Truegamer79 Not a MMO.
@marino00 says 18.65gb, so I've just rounded up to 20gb
I'm not putting any stock into this demo. I already know the full game will be greatness. So this demo will not determine whether I buy day one because I will. I'm downloading right now more so to check performance and see how it looks on my LG C2 and QLED.
I’m really enjoying the demo so far. Biggest thing I notice is the Game of Thrones influence is super-dee-duper obvious. To the point Jon Sn…er - Clive’s dad comes in and says “War is Coming” in a super dramatic tone
@jollyjoe0 That's a line in every game ever made
You know nothing @jollyjoe0
Couldn't resist 😁
@-Sigma- do you find that some games still look better on QLED, even though OLED is lovely and tasty for a lot of games and should be king overall?
I do, and the inconsistency annoys me 😂
Awesome will get downloaded after work cant wait
@Triumph741 i mean I guess? But like, the influence is extremely obvious. It’s not even a criticism or value judgment, just an observation.
This game graphics is on par with some of sony first party games. it look so amazing better than the trailers and it runs 60fps too 😳.
@Martijn87 for 2 hours yes
@ShogunRok Did you order the plushie?
Go on. You did. 🐺
@4kgk2 please mate shut up hahaha I have no money left
@AhabSpampurse Thanks.
Another great exclusive? why? i thought ps5 was doomed.
@Shepherd_Tallon Haha, tempted!
Do the trophies carry over?
@jollyjoe0 AFAIK the devs have been pretty much open about that, one straight up said they made the team watch the whole of the GoT TV show.
This is great; however, it is just too close to the release and since I pre-ordered, I'll rather wait for the full game. The wait is very hard though.
I've been sold on this for months now, so I can wait a little longer. I'm glad they put this out and it's great that they allow the progress to carry over, but I'm good. I skipped the last two trailers too.
@Martijn87 My kid has been mildly upset that this is a Final Fantasy game that we won’t be able to play together. On one hand, I totally welcome an FF game for adults, and on the other…I’m going to miss the joy of experiencing it for the first time together.
Yeah sure why not. Wish it released yesterday we had nothing to do last night so watched some weird Jackie Chan movie “Knight of the Swordsman”. Was actually better than expected even w/ the farting gnome.🤷🏻♂️ Downloading it now.
And for all the “but it’s not turn-based” gatekeepers that often come rushing out, may I suggest that if the action combat isn’t your jam, then Triangle Strategy may be the game you’re looking for (both games seem to have very similar themes, if not exact mirrors of each other).
@Triumph741 Mario: “War is a-coming, Luigi.”
No thanks. "Cyberpunk Phantom liberty is the PS5 RPG I've always wanted" so I'll pass on this entirely.
Can't wait to get home and finally play it! Good to know that progress carries over.
Have it downloaded and ready to go for when I get home from work! The Pre-release event was a blast to watch too. Super excited for this game.
Tried it didn't like it doesn't feel like a final fantasy game for me
I tried to play a bit before work but there was so many cut scenes lol i cant wait to try it out later
I'm an FFXVI dissenter, but I've got it downloaded and I'll give it a shot.
The pre launch celebration was easily the best live stream to watch during this e3 time lol. Putting out a demo for game of the generation was all they needed but watching these legendary devs talk about the game and play it was fun itself
I'm so tempted to go in to work late just to finally get to play this gem
Nice! A decent demo before releasing a new game. Square Enix know how to do it.
Super nice, downloading it now 😁
Update: It's nice the demo is only 18gb, considering ff7 remake 2 have 2 bluray I though the demo will at least be 50gb lol.
was waiting to try the demo before pre-ordering (burnt too many times) I played the demo for 10mins and I've made my mind up. EASY buy this one, I honestly think this will be rated the best original FF since 10. not that the bar has been set high since. but still.. long time coming
Wow that came outta nowhere. I'll give it a go today!
the fact that the progress carries over makes is great, after playing it , i have no regrets per-ordering, the 22nd can't come soon enough. if you are on the fence i'd suggest to play it , mostly because the progress carries over.
Played through the whole thing & then pre-ordered the full game. This, in contrast to FF XV, is action combat done well (as expected given who worked on it). Also a decent EN voice track, evidently the voice director made it quite clear to the cast they weren't dubbing a shounen anime.
Did not hate the combat, frame rate was good so that’s a win for me. Action mode was fine, but I hope you can swap dodge and eikon (R1/circle).
@4kgk2 I was a little disappointed with the Characters, I didn’t think they looked that great, not for next Gen standard anyway. I mean they are decent enough but compared to RDR2’s characters, which were last Gen, they don’t look any near as good. The environments look phenomenal though.
@Grimwood you get a real feel for it after the demo, a short combat mode unlocks with better abilities that you get later in game. I was skeptical about the combat but it very pleasantly surprised me.
@DrVenture69 you can but you can’t just map them, you have to pick a different set, at least from what I could see. I also kept pressing O to dodge lol. I didn’t like the other 2 options available so just kept it the same and will just have to get used to it.
@awaltzforvenus yeah this is one of those games my kids can't watch either, at least not all of them. Playing the demo really shows why it got a adult rating. My oldest daughter is allowed to see movies and play some games that are not for her age, but that's mainly because she really understand that it's fake and just a game or movie. At least you and your kid have FFVII rebirth to look forward to. That game has some dark moments but not like ff16.
@Martijn87 Yeah, that demo makes the M rating very clear, ha. Definitely a lot of excitement for Rebirth in our house, though. The original VII and Remake are her favorites in the series, as it is (although certainly I did play through some segments and explain later, ha).
@luisterr I'm also curious about this, do we earn any trophies @ShogunRok ?
@Shepherd_Tallon I almost ordered the giant plushie personally, but waiting for customer support to change my email address.
Hopefully I can get an order in before they're all sold out.
@KidRyan I ordered it myself. I couldn't resist it.
It's still in stock so you have time.
@KidRyan I'm honestly not sure, I don't think you do. But then I'm not sure the prologue has any Trophies to begin with. Will hopefully be able to answer this when the game's out!
@ShogunRok @Shepherd_Tallon I ultimately decided against ordering it. Maybe if it's still in stock around Christmas?
