The Japanese commercial for Final Fantasy 16 goes hard – alarmingly so. This extended television spot features several renaissance (?) style paintings, which are animated in a kind of stop-motion style to bring them to life. While dramatic music plays in the background, a voiceover speaks in Japanese, presumably spouting deeply poetic declarations about dense subjects, like life and death.
The video ends with a few set-piece moments from the upcoming PS5 game, before reminding entranced viewers that that the title’s due out on 22nd June. Elsewhere, Square Enix recently confirmed that there will be a day one patch, and that the release was originally intended to ship on two discs.

It’s biblical, baby!
The hype for 16 just keeps getting better :] Cant believe we are this close the release!
@get2sammyb You can turn CC on and get English subtitles.
It was quite awesome but I don't think that ad would fly in many other parts of the world.
The marketing for this game has been nothing short of special. All the trailers have been S+ tier, all the gameplay segments with the devs have been fun to watch. Seeing the huge murals, posters, bus decals all around the world give goosebumps. The demo was superb
It's gonna be a little sad to see it all die down soon but at least the full game will be out then
We’ll be getting the same trailer over here but with an outrageous rap soundtrack, I expect. And people will go ?watdaprablammmm
Holy hell… now THAT is a game trailer! 😮
@Judal27 Square-Enix knows they have something special on their hands here. They are adverting this game extra hard.
@Gitface they have a wonderful team in CBU3 that's been putting out bangers. They should definitely cherish them more after this 😆
I’m excited about the game but this spot was a bit over the top for me. Almost felt a bit sacrilegious with some of the imagery and I’m not even that religious.
FF art direction is kinda less anime and more western than previous entries. Hope it will be a hit in Japan, its good for Switch to have some competition
@KaijuKaiser There’s a difference between video games doing it with clearly fantasy or cartoonish takes and using painting styling that actually invokes religious imagery.
Heck, I play plenty of games like Diablo to Shadow of the Damned and am not offended. But whatever, you don’t care about what others think. I get it.
And WTF does it being Japanese have anything to do with it?!?
I generally don’t block people for opinions but when people start attacking over something about religion? Well, maybe you’ll be the first.
This dude thinks a painting style belongs to Christianity.
I played the demo an it is a fantastic game but my god the cut scenes!!! Played about an hour, at least half of that was cut scenes!!! Think i’ll wait till it hits PS+!!
@TheArtfulDodger Try to watch them with attention and see them as part of the journey instead of checking your watch or skipping them. The magic of FF isn’t just pushing the buttons on your controller but also simply sitting back and letting the story wash over you, often with breathtaking graphics. Also, the beginning stages often have more cut scenes than later parts of the game, to set up the story.
I’ll never forget the impact FF X made on me many years ago, in a big part because of those cut scenes.
@ChrisDeku And also that if it's not his religion, it's cartoonish or fantasy but when it's his it's different. Imagine if in God of War, you killed Jesus and his disciples - he'd have a stroke.
Who'd have thought a long playable demo would pay off?!
@Darude84 i always watch cut scenes. My fav type of games are story driven games, just thought there was a lot in FF16. Not played FF since SNES days.
@Matroska I never said if it wasn’t my religion I wouldn’t care. Of course it matters.
Love coming to Push Square. Where even having an opinion about something being sacrilegious gets you mocked!
I’d report comments for this but clearly others enjoy it, from the likes you get. Perhaps I should go somewhere else where the community doesn’t attack someone over a religious point of view.
Good job Push Square!
Superb imagery ,I hope they are taken from the game
@awp69 maybe its taken from cutscenes within the game ,I saw more dantes inferno ,than Renaissance christ to be fair, everyones opinion will differ ,I disagree that you should be shot down for what is your viewpoint ,thats whats wrong with this world now ,everyone can have an opinion as long as it falls in line with theirs.
@ChrisDeku if thats his take on the trailer ,he isn't wrong is he ,its what he personally took from it ,he shouldn't be attacked or ridiculed for his view.
@KaijuKaiser hmm not many people worship zeus anymore though, so think that's a safe subject ,I doubt they would have kratos smashing Allah upside the head.

@ChrisDeku My opinion about what I personally see as religious in the imagery is “nonsensical garbage”? That’s exactly what I’m talking about. No one should be calling people’s opinions “nonsensical garbage” about religion (or anything else for that matter).
@awp69 That’s my opinion though, and I’m entitled to it. It’s also my opinion that the bible is a fantasy story. Please don’t criticise me for my opinions, opinions can’t possibly be wrong.
I’m out of here. Hope the moderators here are happy with the way people are treated.
Oh wait, I’ll get reprimanded for criticizing moderation while nothing happens to those that are truly ruining this community.

@ChrisDeku why yes you are ,but there's way of putting across your point without being insulting
@ChrisDeku hmm he seems to have gone a bit over the top ,slightly hypocritical of him,I think ,oh well, thats the Internet for ya,game looks great though dont you think 😂
Looks like stable diffusion AI. Didn't think that would be uses in a game trailer. Interesting stuff.
@awp69 brah c'mon you're the one that brought it up XD
@MayaMousavi another choral version of "Final Fantasy" is always welcome (last attempt was for the bridge scene in Stranger of Paradise).
I am starting to associate this game with two things:
Choir and gore
I hope the choir is not going to be overused in the game.
@awp69 The Pope does not have copyright on art-styles as far as I am aware. Nothing sacrilegious about this.
“…presumably spouting deeply poetic declarations about dense subjects, like life and death.“
@get2sammyb - Might be a good investment for Push Square to get a translating consultant the team can reach out to in future instances so presumptions aren’t needed. Just an idea… 😋
Looks fantastic I'm rewarding this with a day one purchase.
That was quite a video, thanks for sharing!
