Despite the fact that Final Fantasy XVI is out in just a couple of weeks, Square Enix has been bombarding us with new Final Fantasy VII Rebirth news. The anticipated sequel ended up being the closer to Summer Game Fest Live, and we saw a lot more of the game than we thought we would at this point.
The new trailer shows actual gameplay — in what seem to be somewhat open environments — new playable characters like Red XIII, what looked like a slightly adjusted battle system, and more. We also have an updated release window: 'Early 2024'. We told you it wouldn't be out this year!

Looking forward too it.
Looks great (and confusing)
Also that game is going to take up a good chunk of my storage space when it comes with two discs lol
I feel like I'm the only person in the world not jumping up and down for this. XD
What I wanted from Rebirth was the feeling of walking through the world and then noticing Junon (or other locations) on the horizon and making my way towards them as they grow bigger and eventually loom over you. This seemed to show that. It's an amazing setting, with so many iconic and atmospheric locations and I just want to get that in modem graphics with an immersive sense of scale. The trailer made me feel the devs got that.
It's fitting this is a (pseudo) remake of FFVII because I feel like I just went back in time to the 90's upon seeing that it'll be two discs.
Looking great though. Not going to play it for a long, LONG while myself since I haven't played either the original FFVII or Remake Pt. 1 but I'm definitely interested.
Also it seems like they're going to be killing Yuffie instead of Aerith this time round; poor thing
Yooooooooooooooooo!
I better hurry up and beat this VII Remake I have sitting here.
@mariomaster96 I wonder what they mean by that. If I remember correctly, the first part came on two discs too but one was an installation disc and the other the play disc, like older PC games would do. But I'd love it if it was as big as it seems. You seem to at least get to Cosmo Canyon (so we'll see the Gold Saucer) but I think they need to get to the Temple of the Ancients - at the very least - if they have a chance of this being a three parter.
It's really cool seeing these familiar locations rendered in such high detail now. This definitely looks like it's going to continue sticking close to the original game.
Strong GOTY contender for 2024, and the first game to make me feel like it might be worth getting a PS5.
And some thought Square should have done the entirety of FF7 in one game? Lol.
This is looking massive.
This looks very cool. Please do not ruin it. Please.
Also I just rewatched it and at the end Sephiroth seems to say that Aeris isn't actually Aeris ("You know that I killed her and so... Who is she?") which is interesting. Like, he does kill her but after everything we've seen in this trailer. So it seems like this is chronologically after the original as some theorised. We're going full Kingdom Hearts in terms of Nomura-isms.
@KaijuKaiser That was the Ever Crisis trailer, not Rebirth. Though who knows what Nomura will do in Rebirth.
When they said it would offer a high degree of freedom, I was not expecting the world to look as vast as that. So damn hyped for this. And those team combos were so amazing to watch. I take it those were taken from the Yuffie dlc? I really gotta get on that now. There was so much to take in. My minds blown. 2 FFs to look forward to relatively soon.
Well obviously it wasn’t going to be out this year. When they said winter 2023 I don’t think they really realized that is like a 10 day window lol. But obviously we all knew what they meant. I’m wondering why they are advertising it being on 2 discs though. Normally I would say who cares, unless they are trying to say this is parts 2&3 and this is the end.
Will this be the final game or will there be a part 3? If it’s the final game I’ll be playing Crisis Core and replaying Part 1 first. That’s the correct order to play them in, right?
@Matroska as for your first question I'm guessing something like red dead2...data disc and play disc, which means basically massive install size,
And sephiroths comment on " I killed her" who is she I belive he is referring to Tifa, when she tried to stop him getting to jenova in nibilheim reactor,
(sigh) I'm sorry I'm so sorry (again this is my personal opinion if you feel differently that's awesome and I'm happy you're excited) but I just hate this fan fiction crap they're doing to the story it's killed my excitement for the rest of this project
@Uromastryx Yeah I think they're trying to make it ambiguous by playing that line over footage of Tifa but there's a bit in part 1 where Aeris walks off and it's made to look like the bit in the original when Cloud is chasing after Aeris to the city of the Ancients - which leads to her death. And when Cloud sees this (in Remake) he sheds a tear. There's definitely something where events from the original are something characters in Remake are vaguely aware of. Not to mention how we see Meteor in part 1 too.
@Darude84 That's the chronological order, yeah, but bear in mind CC was written to make sense after FFVII. It's up to you, I don't think either way is wrong, but it's like do you watch SW Episodes 4-6 before or after 1-3? They're designed in release order but it's still cool to watch in chronological order.
Don't forget to play Dirge of Cerberus too 😉
I knew it wouldn't be "winter 2023"
Yes this look amazing.a lot of final fantasy games to look forward into.final fantasy 7 rebirth looks amazing.word up son
@KaijuKaiser Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised. Especially after that Naruto villain-esque bad guy in the Yuffie DLC.
@KaijuKaiser Sometimes I even agree with some of the things you say, but I can never agree with how you feel the need to knit pick everybody on any article having to Do with all things final fantasy.
Relax. sit down and smoke a joint and stop acting like somebody's slapped your sister.
@Darude84 Remake project has a third game planned. Crisis Core is a prequel to the OG FF VII but spoilers a fairly major third-act reveal so shouldn't be played first. Ditto Before Crisis (tho' the only way to play that at the moment is a bad RPGmaker "remake").
@Fizza where did you get "Yuffie dies" from that trailer? Sephiroth appears to be insinuating that the real Tifa died at Nibelheim and that the "Tifa" travelling with the others is a puppet formed from Cloud's memories & Jenova cells (<spoiler for something on disc 2 of OG FF VII redacted>)
@Matroska Hmm, might stick with the two base games first then and play CC after that. Don’t even know BoC… As far as I can see it’s also not playable on current gen.
As for Star Wars I’ll stick with Koothrappali: 4, 5, then 2 & 3 as a flashback, finish with 6 and forget about 1
Square with the two hit combo(FFXVI and this) coming up. This is the best timeline for me.🎉🥳
Looks amazing! Can’t F-ing wait!! The environments, the combat, the EVERYTHING!!! Had to turn the trailer off when my boy Sephiroth came on—it’s media blackout for me from this point forward!
Ok, FF XVI , FF VII and silent Hill 2, the PS5 investment is starting to bear fruits.
@dancingstar93 Just rewatched the trailer and I realise that it's Tifa he swings at and not Yuffie, my apologies XD
This looks incredible!! Most anticipated game right here! Cannot wait! Where’s Max for the breakdown?!
I cant seem to get excited knowing I'll have to wait at least 5 more years to see the ending of this trilogy
That ending scene. I love how Sephiroth is trying to gas light Cloud.
It looks absolutely perfect! I forgot FF16 even existed for a second.
I'm in, take my money!
Delighted to see Elena, and bringing Yuffie along. I wonder what overworld stories are gonna stick and which ones are gonna go. Dyne? Dio/Gold Saucer? Cait Sith? I bet Vincent is saved for part 3.
@MidnightDragonDX after how they ruined the story I'm not too
@Keyblade-Dan same they ruined the story
Does this mean Part 3 will launch on 3 discs? lol
Is this unreal 4 engine like remake? Or are they using unreal 5 already?
@RatmCky tbf crisis core said winter 2022 and released before winter so it was possible 😂
@Cordyceps what makes you think it won't be? They said early 2024. Winter goes until March 2024
Now this and persona 3 reloaded are the RPGs I'm looking forward to!
RPGs with actual playable party members hype!!
Roll on 2024!!!
The original Final Fantasy VII changed my views of gaming all those years ago. See so many iconic scenes and places of my youth, in that rebuild detail, is breathtaking.
Those Japanese character running speeds... 🤦♂️
@Andy22385 Saying Winter 2023 When you know the game is going to drop in 2024 is disingenuous.
@Uromastryx In the JP version of the trailer he explicitly mentions her name at that point. Also in the announcement trailer from last year, we hear Tifa asking Cloud, apparently in connection with the Nibelheim flashback "What are you implying? That I died? That I'm some kind of imposter?"
Looks like the GotY discussion for 2024 will be starting early. Looks absolutely incredible. Hope it’s out for my birthday in January!
pre-order material right there.
if youre into final fantasy of course
Has anyone seen a 4k version of this trailer yet? I want to be able to better see it, as the trailer shown was pretty low quality. Looks great though!
@Matroska "Sephiroth seems to say that Aeris isn't actually Aeris ("You know that I killed her and so."
Dangit Sepheroth, spoiler tags FFS!
Really excited for this as OG FF7 is my favorite game of all time. I really have enjoyed the Remake stuff so far as well.
I think the biggest sigh of relief is seeing how big and expansive this game is looking. That's so key to making FF7 feel correct.
"The unknown journey" tells me all I need to know about this game and it's not good.
@NEStalgia seriously! According to the tag line, the unknown journey of this remake y'all played already is yet to continue!
Only 2 discs? Why not make 3 or 4 like the old days.
Legit hyped. Happy to see Red XIII and Yuffie as well
@Cordyceps it actually said next winter, not winter 2023. Even though it's the same thing.
@Matroska Tetsuya Nomura was only the director for Remake, Rebirth is being directed by Naoki Hamaguchi.
@Ralizah If you're lucky, maybe they'll sell the PS5 by itself for $450 Disc/$350 Digital, or a discounted bundle for $500 Disc/$400 Digital?
@Darude84 I'm unsure if you saw @dancingstar93's reply, but Rebirth is only Part 2 of 3. There will be one more remake game after Rebirth, it's a trilogy.
@BossBE We don't know yet at this time. I'm hoping it's Unreal Engine 5.
@freddquadros I know exactly how you feel sorta! Original FF7 was my very first JRPG, awoke my inner anime nerd.
Thanks for the replies! Won’t play CC then until after part 3, since I haven’t played the original VII and don’t want spoilers.
@Andy22385 It used to say that in the first video way back. they updated the release window here. People were hyping 2 FFs in one calendar year for a second.
so props for managing expectations actually.
