Konami has announced the first volume of the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection will release for PS5 on 24th October 2023. As confirmed in today's Nintendo Direct, the compilation brings the original PS1 version of Metal Gear Solid along with the PS3 remasters of Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater to Sony's current-gen system. The MSX and NES versions of Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, and Metal Gear: Snake's Revenge will also be included.
A new trailer embedded above features footage from all three Metal Gear Solid titles to give you a proper idea of what to expect from the collection, and you're even getting some graphic novels and a soundtrack bundled in too! Pre-orders are going live today, with the price set at £49.99 / $59.99.
Here's an infographic explaining everything included in Volume 1:
A physical version of the Master Collection has been confirmed, which will cost the same as the digital edition: £59.99. Pre-ordering the game nets you a digital soundtrack containing "newly recorded, orchestral renditions of the iconic themes from the Metal Gear Solid series including The Best Is Yet to Come, Can't Say Goodbye to Yesterday, and Snake Eater".
The obvious elephant in the room here is the Master Collection is releasing during a very busy period. The likes of Alan Wake 2 and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 release meer days before it. Will you make room to revisit these classics? Let us know in the comments below.

sorry but this isn't coming to PS4?
They definitely could've released this during December, this is gonna get stomped amongst the holiday giants
Metal Gear Solid 1 with trophies is going to be sick. I hope each game comes with its own set of trophies (the max games included), but I have a feeling that's hoping too much from Konami.
Hell yeah! This is worth it just to play MGS1 again
@anoyonmus No it's not, current-gen and Switch only.
I wonder if MGS1 will be packaged like a classics catalog title with its own trophies. Has there been any word on this?
Any news on if they have updated controls?
Will MGS1 be remastered? I've been playing it on PS3 back-compat, and it is really hard on the eyes with all of the pixelation, etc😵
@LiamCroft weird
Of course you need the power of next gen to play those old games. There is no way the games would run the the PS4. You need the cutting edge technology of the Switch and the SSD of the PS5 to play them.
I don't care for Spidey and Alan Wake, I am ready to return to Shadow Moses and in Russia with brand new trophies to collect. We don't have details yet on price and a possible physical version?
Edit: Just realized that my newest platinum trophies are in FF Pixel Remaster, Crisis Core and Sonic Origins... That's clearly not why I got a PS5 for but I always end up returning to the classics...
Okay it looks like Konami is doing it properly. But why the same week as Spider-Man 2?
Wow! They are actually including Snakes Revenge in here!? That's actually pretty awesome. Sure the game isn't great but in the interest of game preservation I appreciate that. Plus the graphic novels too? Say what you will about Konami but they don't phone it in on their classic collections.
As for it releasing in a busy schedule, that is true...but it's Metal Gear so I will be buying it. Will I play all of them right away? No but at least MGS1. It's been too long!
Uff that MGS1 looks rough , why they didnt upscale it? but hey at least it should have trophies
also they should have release this much earlier like this August if not all games then split it monthly or something
Wooh what a collection! Metal Gear Solid is making a comeback, and I've been waiting to see this day since forever. Day 1 for me.
@AdamNovice It’s the week after Spider man. They should have waited till November for the MGS collection really. Everyone will be busy with Spider man who has a PlayStation or with AC mirage. There’s also Endless Dungeon in the same month
This is one game/collection where release date probably doesn't matter. There is no rush to target big day one sales for a collection of old games.
The full remake however, would perhaps be a different story
@Petto They should have gone with the Twin Snakes remake version as that still holds up after all these years and is the better version for MGS1 in my opinion
@Ravix Yeah hope they don’t mess up the remake of Snake Eater
Any word on a physical version?
Digital only? I dont mind either way. Also including Snakes Revenge is hilarious. Who was aking for that XD
@Dragoon1994 Eh that could have only be on Switch , as its still a nintendo exclusive with nintendo stuff , still not a fan of that game , i prefer the original PS1 game
@anoyonmus Time to get a PS5 bucko
The Nintendo Direct said each game can be purchase separately. I assume that's the same with PS?
@Danloaded
I know. When I saw Snakes Revenge I legit burst out laughing for a bit! Though I do appreciate the the fact that they actually threw it in here anyway. Gives me hope Acid 1&2 might actually make it into Volume 2!
Love that they added the MGS1 digital graphic novel from PSP. I'm not into graphic novel games but that one was a banger. Also glad the games can be purchased separately. Will pickup MGS1 and MGS2. I'll wait for MGS Delta
@anoyonmus Time to upgrade. Its been 3 years since PS5 launched. PS4 has had a great 10 year run.
MGS1 upscaled 4K via Duckstation looks so good , it's so unfortunate that we won't get anything close to that
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M8_c7V03GsI
Shame it doesn't include the MGS1 Integral ver of the original, I've never had the chance to play that ver.
@Petto True enough
@Korgon I hope so I absolutely love MGA and MGA2 two of my all time favourite games from PSP. Hope they include them in either Vol 2 or Vol 3 depending on how many MG games they give us
MGS1 looks really rough in the video
I wonder what future vol will contain? I really hope MGS4 is one of them.
@anoyonmus Guess not. time to buy a PS5 lol
@NathanKang I don't think it will. People who are fans of the franchise will just buy it no matter what. I have all these games multiple times over. I'll be grabbing it even though I'm likely going to be busy with spiderman at the time. As soon as I'm done with spiderman, I'll be starting on this collection.
@Danloaded disc version is coming. Already confirmed.
Just looked on PS Store, it can't be preordered, all you can do is wish list it.
@NathanCox most likely. Which may mean each has its own platinum like Pixel Remasters.
Any sign of a physical edition, standard or limited?
@Czar_Khastik I've just updated the article with evidence of a physical version!
I am so excited for this.
It will be great to re-experience those classics!! Can't wait!!
@LiamCroft Nice, thanks!
@Petto it looks terrible. Zero difference between it and my PS3 back-compat version👎Being that I mostly care for MGS1, this is a hard pass for me. When will we get a true remaster of this classic?
@eagletrippin Expect a remake in a few years
@eagletrippin upscaled version looks way better imho
it seems Konami or whoever did the port of MGS1 for this collection seems like a simple PS1 port without any improvements
and if you want better graphics then you have to wait for a remake
Metal Gear on the NES brings back some childhood memories. I remember ever time I wanted to save, I had to write down a long ass save code and god forbid you wrote it down wrong because then you had to go back to the previous code and start from there. I had a notepad full of codes, lol
I wonder what will be in Vol 2? Maybe a portable-focused pack? That could be Ghost Bable/MGS-GBC, Portable Ops, Portable Ops +, Peace Walker, and that's it? Maybe the two Ac!d games as well? If they include 4 there would just be Ground Zeroes, Phantom Pain, and Survive left. Rising maybe? I guess they could include Rising in Vol 2, then if possible include 4 alongside GZ, V, and Survive. Then again they look to be going in order. All bets are kind of off. Also it's Konami, so they could also bungle it.
I'm still very skeptical they'd include 4. From reading technical articles both at the time and alongside the development of PS3 emulation MGS4 was crafted directly around the PS3 to the extent that there are features of the PS3 OS that only MGS4 uses.
I'm also not 100% sure I'm down to play MGS4 again lol. I played and loved it the first time but I'm not sure I'm down for its specific blend of Kojima-ness anymore.
Still buying it 100% tho.
Lol ! I have this trilogy for the PS2. Uncut and uncensored content. Enjoy. A kekekekeke caw caw caw.
Good to see a release date, but that’s a lot for a collection of old games. I was thinking $40, maybe $50. $60 is a big ask for something like this. It’s 3 games (practically speaking). Not each is something you could resell for $20.
@Petto that Duckstation version you posted, I would take that. That is clean and easy on the eyes. This port looks bad.
Cool.thats a lot of metal gear games.those metal gear are iconic.word up son
@Triumph741 A 'remake' would be awesome. But I would have been fine with a simple remaster of MGS1 here, but all they did was port it🤦♂️
@Americansamurai1 Adapt instead of expecting them to make the experience enjoyable for you.
@Petto MGS1 on PS3 was basically the original disc images running under an emulation layer (even to the point you had to go into a system menu to switch discs or switch controller ports); the fact this is cross-platform (which we didn't know for sure before today) at least indicates it's not using a proprietary emulator (like, say, Castlevania Requiem does) but yeah, likely to be a pretty basic port.
@WhensDinner GZ+PP and Survive are playable on current-gen anyway & regularly come up in sales. Guns of the Patriots did reportedly have a working build on Xbox 360 but got canned because it would have needed 5 or 6 DVDs (per Time Extension a few days ago, citing an interview with the game's assistant producer).
The presence of Snake's Revenge certainly indicates these collections aren't going to be constrained by anyone's notion of series "canon," anyway.
Btw, PS store page has been updated & lists price for digital edition as 50 not 60 UK pounds.
why is there no ps4 release? that is INSANE. the inclusion of a switch port makes this news all that much harder to take in
#****konami
@twinspectre90 what a dumb thing to say. If I'm paying I have expectations if it doesn't meet those expectations than I just won't buy. Controls have evolved a lot since these games were released.
@anoyonmus apparently not? i am just as confused as you are. this is a travesty to be honest since they put the effort in for a switch port of all things and didn't bother to include the ps4... these are 20 year old games so it is inexcusable, not to mention even the ps3 handled the ports sublimely.
@Americansamurai1 Learn how to play. Evolved? we are talking about videogames and every games (if they want) can offer multiple way to control the characters.
What's the difference in MGS1 and MG1 I have only played MGS.
@twinspectre90 learn to have expectations and not just blindly buy a game out of fanboyism. If. Why would anyone play a game that sucks to control?
@Americansamurai1 Say "I suck at playing this game" it would be more believable.
" learn to have expectations and not just blindly buy a game out of fanboyism" Here I agree with you, cough Spiderman cough .
@twinspectre90 won't waste anymore time on your fanboyism, you can just keep buying whatever they release.
@pharos_haven One has the #1 after the abbreviation...
Thanks Nintendo for making us wait for this info 👍
@WhensDinner I read an article on Time Extension that MGS4 was running perfectly on Xbox 360 but didn't get released due to the number of discs that it would have shipped on and the developers loyalty to PlayStation.
I genuinely think a lot of times that the difficulty of converting games from PS3 to newer hardware is massively overstated. The Uncharted trilogy, The Last of Us and many others seemed to manage it fine. PS3 wasn't some mythical unicorn that only geniuses could program for.
@Drago201 Swings & roundabouts, Nintendo / Xbox / PC players had to wait over 3 weeks for confirmation that this collection was coming to anything other than PS5.
More interested in this than Spiderman or Alan Wake!
@dancingstar93 its not the confirmation for me it's that we had to wait for Nintendo in order to get a release date
@Americansamurai1 Whats so difficult in learning how to play? are you that lazy?
Honestly I'm such a massive MGS fan, so Spiderman 2 will just have to make room for it. Everything else installed on my PS5 around the end of October and November are gonna be ignored. Swap them around, one night it'll be SM2 and then the following night will be MGS or play them both in same evening game sesh. Gonna feel so good getting back on the MGS train, nostalgia wins sometimes
While Spiderman 2 is a day one purchase, this trump's that by a mile. I remember playing MGS on some demo disk back when I was in 8th or 9th grade. I can't wait to play them again.
Someone on YouTube made the MGS1 intro using UE5 and it's s#&t hot. Now if only Konami weren't so lazy and actually rebuilt the game using that engine it would sell well
A. It’s £49.99 not £59.99.
B. It’s still £40 too much.
It's great that it's coming, but I'm also sarcastically thankful for Konami making this an easy pass for the time being due to a horrible release date. Not waiting on Spider-Man 2 just because everybody wants to release everything in October for some reason. Exaggeration, but there is definitely too much coming out in October.
@Ludacritz I believe they still have yet to say it will. I’m really hoping they do though.
Damn so no VR Missions Included?
I think I'll be picking this one up on Switch. Will be nice to have it portable.
@VatoLoco47 VR Missions IS included, it's on the description on the the store. It's just missing from the article.
@AdamNovice Great news! Thanks for confirming
@InsaneWade Is it the same story?
@VatoLoco47 They've also said MGS2 & 3 are the HD collections so we should be getting the extra content and VR Missions there too.
@Hundred_Hand_Slap I got a Switch to play these games anyway so it’s fine.
@__jamiie I mean there have been a SLEW of developers that have corroborated claims of how difficult it was to program on the PS3. I think we should take their word for it as they're the real professionals.
@liamcroft any word if they'll adjust the aspect ratio, black bars and subtitles. I do hope all three will be a proper 16:9 with optional subtitle overlay.
It was fine in the 4:3 days but having the cutscenes pushed to the upper half of the screen just doesn't pass in a hd remaster collection.
The addition of snakes revenge, guides, soundtracks and the graphic novels are all a welcome surprise however.
@Rafie I was referring to the ability of devs to port PS3 games to newer hardware. It's not as difficult as people prefer to think.
I'd been quite interested in trying out this series starting with the older games, so this collection is perfect for me.
@anoyonmus
I wouldn't give up hope. I have a PS5 but I would prefer this on PS4. I don't see the logic in not releasing this on PS4. Let's wait and see.
@__jamiie I can't defend or condemn the notion as I have absolutely no clue as to how game programming works. I just went by the lack of ports from PS3 to current gen. If they weren't being remastered, I haven't seen a proper port really. Unless they used the 360 version (which was the best version in most games that wasn't 1st party).
With MGS being absolute favorite franchise, this will take priority over everything else. I still have both previous collections from the PS3 and all of my old PS2 and PS1 versions of the game, so I'll be looking forward to the convenience factor.
@NotSoCryptic Same. Also AC mirage and endless dungeon too hoping to have quite a few things finished by October
@AdamNovice All this means is I will be ignoring the collection in favor of Spidey 2, have to avoid those spoilers.
