For the past generation or so, fighting game developer NetherRealm Studios has interchanged between Mortal Kombat and Injustice. This year, however, it’ll release Mortal Kombat 1 – the second successive entry in the series after 2019’s Mortal Kombat 11. So, why did it make that decision? Series creator Ed Boon explained in an interview with IGN.
“There were a number of factors, some of which I can talk about, some of which I probably shouldn’t,” he joked, before elaborating that the pandemic played a huge part. “We really wanted to be careful with COVID and all that stuff and everybody staying safe. So there were a bunch of variables involved that eventually we realised, ‘Okay, let's do another Mortal Kombat game and hopefully we'll get back to the Injustice games.’”
Boon was pushed for further clarification, and insisted the door is not closed on Injustice. “Not at all,” he emphatically replied. So, it sounds like we may get a new Injustice later this generation after all, but for now all of the developer’s focus is on Mortal Kombat 1. Would you be hyped for a hypothetical Injustice 3? Mortal Kombat 1 looks like they started Injustice 3, the WB sales concern happened, they switched the game to MK to be safe.
MK1 is giving off Injustice vibes.
The last fighting game I bought day one was Injustice 2. I would totally do the same for Injustice 3.
@OmegaStriver I'm sure that's the reason he alluded to that he can't talk about, yeah.
Really hope a 3rd does happen as the first two games are fantastic.
Yeah it's a great single player series.
Love injustice so much, shame it didn't get made but hopefully it's next.
Glad they went with MK instead for purely selfish reasons. 100% chance I’d buy an MK game, 0% chance I’d buy Injustice. Just not a DC/Marvel person, you know?
@WallyWest I didn't like the first one that much the second one though was one of my favorite games.
@somnambulance You missed out on the second game it was the best.
Hopefully we do get an Injustice 3. Had a blast with Injustice 2. Even got the platinum
Much as I love MK, I'm glad to hear Injustice 3 is still on the dev team's minds.
Hmm..I'm getting the feeling we might not see another injustice but some kind of "we want our games to tie in to our Gunn movie verse" nonsense. I really hope i'm totally wrong.
I know there were rumours of a possible DC V Marvel game too. And with Marvel's legacy of tag fighters, the kameo system would have suit the pairing.
I also think MK1 looks too clean and colourful, it doesn't have that edge that previous games had outside of fatalities. Heck I think there's a Malibu stage, what's the betting that was going to be Tony Stark's stage?
@Flaming_Kaiser I’ve played it casually. Super hero stuff doesn’t do it for me though. I have no interest in Spider-Man 2 either, for the record. Mortal Kombat, on the other hand, I’ve loved the series since the original! MK9, X, and 11 were all fantastic too, so it’s got good momentum.
I'll be interested in an Injustice 3 when DC Comics allows its fatalities to be instituted into the game.
@NoFaceBigFoot I found the other supermoves just as cool to be honest maybe a few extra though I'd like that.
@z0d15g0d : I hope that doesn't happen, hopefully Injustice will be part of the Elseworlds label (which basically contains any project that doesn't fit into Gunn's dumb shared media universe plans).
@Coolmusic I hope it doesn't but seeing as they are the only ones to make a successful DC universe game WB will probably redirect their efforts to assist Gunn.
@OmegaStriver @AdamNovice I could definitely see that being the case. Especially since I do remember reading about those Marvel vs DC rumors.
