Forever Entertainment has today confirmed it's porting the Front Mission 1st: Remake to PS5, PS4 after a Trophy listing leaked its existence, releasing later this month on 30th June 2023. The tactical RPG returns with a modern mode said to sport improved controls, and the soundtrack has also been orchestrated.
"With dozens of characters to meet, its mature story, and non-Manichean protagonists, Front Mission is the classic of a tactical Japanese RPG genre, finally available worldwide," the PS Store listing reveals. While it lacks a price at the time of writing, the Nintendo Switch version goes for £31.49/$34.99 on the eShop. It's not known yet whether the PS5, PS4 editions will come with any further graphical improvements over the base Nintendo Switch remake.
While the improved visuals supposedly give Front Mission a much-welcome facelift, our sister publication Nintendo Life slammed the game for tedious gameplay and inaccurate weapons. "Unless you’re a die-hard fan of the original or the TRPG genre in general, you’re probably safe to give this one a miss or just lower the difficulty of the combat to enjoy the story. Despite the strengths of the setting and the characters, the gameplay becomes more frustrating than fun and won’t keep most players engaged past the first few hours," it concluded in a 5/10 rated review.
Forever Entertainment is also enhancing Front Mission 2 and Front Mission 3, first for Nintendo Switch once again, so some gameplay improvements may be packaged with those sequels. I do want to try this series but it's coming in an extremely busy time unfortunately. SF6 tomorrow, FF16 later in the month, and Trails into Reverie next month. I just don't have the time I'm afraid. Heck I'm still trying to finish Zelda!
I will get it eventually. It’s kind of a game I always wanted to play but never got too.
Any news on physical editions?
I’ll probably get this at some point. I like mechs and turn-based tactics, so I should like this. I play most games on the easiest difficulty these days, so it shouldn’t be too frustrating for me to play.
I played fm 3 and 4.
Is this any good?
I enjoyed this game on Switch. It is pretty hard until you start unlocking skills so can be a bit rough to begin with but I thought it was worth pushing through. Really hoping they follow through with the second and especially third remakes!
@Czar_Khastik I had the same question. Maybe with a cool PS1 sleeve like they did with Wipeout. 😁
@Flaming_Kaiser That would be awesome! Imagine a world where we could also get a steelbook with a manual tucked inside. Wishful thinking, I know.
@Czar_Khastik They did do a lot of Steelcases lately so let's hope.
If they say "Forever Entertainment is also enhancing Front Mission 2 and Front Mission 3, first for Nintendo Switch once again" That just means it's coming out on switch first, but if the game is better on ps4/ps5 why not just wait for the better console to play it on? Unless they do something on switch that they didn't on ps4/ps5/pc to make up for buying it first on switch.
Sorry but being first to play something isn't no way near as important as getting it later on in life, but way better graphics/sound and loading speeds, down the line.
