It's everyone's favourite news story: Sony has just released a new firmware update for PS5. It's been a little bit since the last one, but before you get too excited, this is just a small one. Nothing too crazy here.
So, what does PS5 system software version 23.01-07.40.00 do? Here are the full patch notes for the latest firmware:
- We've improved system software performance and stability.
- We've improved the messages and usability on some screens.
And that's it! We're not entirely sure what Sony means by "some screens", but hopefully it makes for a better messaging experience overall. Not that we really had a problem with PS5 messages, though. Anyway, the update comes in at just over 1GB, so it's not gonna take long to get your console up to date.

Improved messages? Reminds me that I can never ever get notifications from the PS App on iPhone, anyone else get/solve that?
Earth shattering? More than than matey-boy! My universe just imploded violently!!😂😂😂
Downloading as we speak to stop the chaos.
Nice. Thank god my PS5 is stable again, yesterday it almost fell over. Thanks Sony.
Where's my Folders sony?
Am I the only one who lost my game lists since some weeks?
Sony Elaborate firmware notes challenge (Impossible)
Give us the damn wallpapers feature please 🙏
They need to fix the PS App, mine is really laggy when scrolling. Also, when I add games into my wish list on the app it's not appearing on my wish list on my PS5.
@Snake_V5 Glad you mentioned this. I thought it was my phone, but it's been awful for the last couple of weeks!
Either revert the UI back to the way it used to be or give us the option to turn off the forced Activity Cards finally. The UI used to be nice with the artwork and such, but the more games I play the more the update becomes even more useless. The activities shown sometimes are just completely random and not even the one I'm currently doing, and obviously the screenshots are far uglier than the nice game artwork most of the time.
Pointless update again. About time Sony added something worthwhile, like the ability to hookup multiple hard drives or the ability to upload screenshots and videos to services like Google Drive!
@Rob_230 also is your playstation stars symbol visable from the app home screen? I always used to check mine but just now noticed its disappeared.
@Kidfunkadelic83 Yep i'm currently still seeing the stars icon on the android app on the 'play' tab. Its just to the left of my notification bell symbol.
The playstation store is lagging like crazy though
I’d like to see a huge update hit the library of games. I hate that it’s to the far right making it long to get to, and it don’t save your sort selection. The cards are just lame and in the way for me, i would love to get rid of that clutter. Sony could focus on reducing clicks to do things. Everything is at least 2-3 more clicks than needed. Would like to see it become a really basic and fast Ui that get’s me in and out of screens and games. Right now it’s bloated, slow and just no where near as good as PS4 and Xbox. Again for me. I am sure some people love it. These are just my update wishlist and it would have me liking my PS5 more. I didn’t even mention the store cause it’s such a mess that is a whole update on its own.
I remember the days when PC magazines came with bonus CDs packed with stuff. Nowadays, all a 1GB update does is "improve" the messaging app. WTH, even the install disc of WinXP was smaller than that!
@wiiware 100% agreed, we want real folders on the home screen!
@Luminous117 @Yeezee Seriously nuts that the PS5 still doesn't have themes/custom backgrounds after 2.5 years.
They can't keep spoiling us like this
@wiiware @KidRyan Still no themes or proper folders!!! Grrr...
Also, I want some custom music via the themes as well because that funeral dirge that the PS5 plays in the background is soooo depressing!
@Green-Bandit The PS4 UI is still light years ahead of this 3 year old fridge. And why so many button clicks? The PS4's context menu (by holding down the much better DS4 button) is possibly the most important functionality missing from the PS5.
@KilloWertz totally agree. The pop up activity cards are just pain. I never even look at them, they just get in the way. I don't understand why they thought they'd be a good idea. Just makes a messy interface. I wish we could just turn them off.
@Anke yes I typically get them on my iphone before my actual ps5 somehow
"We've improved the messages and usability on some screens."
This reminds me of the last 5 times I've tried to connect my G Cloud to my PS5 on PSPlay and after the PS5 goes into please wait for a minute I keep getting the "Something went wrong" error
(insert Nicolas Cage gif.)
@sanderson72 The PS5 is the only console ever where you have to enter the Konami Code just to turn it off.
@Animal_3- totally the opposite to me, technology eh?
@MarkA67 u can have muti harddrives connected I have 4TB one has all my ps4 games and few ps5s all gotta do re add ps5 games when want them
@daddycool197 because there are a option to quickly load the game or games modes like gta freemode or Fifa FUT, continue missions ect
I'm not asking for nothing groundbreaking just folders on the main screen 🥲 the PS5 UI shouldn't feel like a downgrade from the PS4 and even the simple yet to the point PS3 UI!
Would love to have an actual Discord app instead of the way it is now.
@Juanalf Also, the tub o' lard can only download one thing at once which a definite step down from the PS4 background download chip.
How about improving the game library, the PS5 is after all a GAME-ing console. I have over 700 games and no search function, it is pathetic.
@Falkirk4life Sorry, but they are useless just as often as they are useful. Horizon Forbidden West has activities that can never be completed, but since they are forced on the home screen rather than it just having the game's art, it will forever have activity cards rather than the game's art no matter if you 100% the game or not. Immortals Fenyx Rising jumps around to random activities rather than always sticking to whichever one you are tracking in-game, rendering the feature useless. There's other examples of course, but I don't really have time to list more.
Regardless of what it can do occasionally, they should have never forced it onto the home screen, thus taking away the game's artwork. They weren't being used, but it's still a pointless change given the activity cards themselves are literally two clicks down from the Resume Activity button. At the very least, there should be an option to turn them off to revert back to the old look.
Dear Jim, give me a function to run my disc-based PS5 games (I love physical media) without the disc actually inserted. This would work for e.g. a month or so, and then my PS5 would ask for the disc again. You as gamer had to allow Sony to save the disc‘s serial number on their servers, and you had to inform Sony when you’d sell the disc to somebody else. Lending out would be blocked (effectively blocking the function for you if you would „buy“ the disc back after a month or so).
My main question to you: Do the discs have unique serial numbers on which the PS5 has access?
@KidRyan FAX
Ya know I liked the Activity Cards at first back in 2020. I thought it would be an interesting feature for open world games after completing the main story.
But so few games, even Sony’s own games, actually make good use of them that I would like for Sony to just kill them off. I tend to just ignore them now.
@OrtadragoonX I'd also like to see them killed off and Sony allow us access to the web browser which is STILL hidden away! Searching for online treasure maps in ESO is a pain now as it's a 2 machine job rather than the old stager being able to run the app AND its web browser at the same time.
That said, given that the PS4 had a recent update to its web browser with variable zoom levels, I have to wonder how bad the PS5's one is?
