With titles like Assassin's Creed Mirage, Alan Wake 2, and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 releasing around the same time, PS5 game Lords of the Fallen may not be something you pick up on day one. However, a new 18-minute gameplay deep dive from developer Hexworks is proof of why it should remain on your wishlist, as the current-gen experience appears to be shaping up nicely ahead of a 13th October 2023 release date. Check out the extensive gameplay demonstration above.
Starting off with a boss fight, footage shows how death isn't the end of your journey. You can resurrect in the realm of the dead, Umbral. This gives you one last chance to survive, and in the gameplay presentation at least, it results in the boss being defeated. From there, it's revealed how using an Umbral Lamp can show hidden platforms and objects within the environment, which are manifested from the other realm. You can cross between the two realms, but doing so consumes a life and it's explained that returning back to our world isn't an easy task.
Other highlights from the gameplay presentation include a look at co-op, Vestige (like bonfires in Dark Souls) creation, the mixture of melee action and magical abilities, and how some of the many worlds come together.
"The team at Hexworks is thrilled to finally share an extended gameplay preview and reveal numerous new details of our dark fantasy action-RPG," said studio head Paul Gascon. "We have passionately carved our own path in this increasingly popular genre, and we are particularly excited to see how players will approach the game's unique dual-world mechanic when it releases this October."

Everytime I hear about this game I go through a loop of 'wait hasn't this already been out for years' then realising it's a sequel to the game which has the same name :/
Do the xbox or playstation have one game that isn't some grimdark demonfest? This art style is becoming very tired, very quickly.
Getting a proper Demon's Souls vibe from that video, day one for me!
That hit at 1:53 was a miss
I wish it didn't come out so close to spiderman. I would jump in if it came out sooner
I hope it has a difficulty level or at least more balance. The first one was brutal, even amongst this sort of game.
@Cashews Hi-Fi Rush on Xbox.
This looks friggin awesome. Unreal engine 5 looks more realised in this title.
One of My most anticipated games remaining for the year alongside lies of P, atlas fallen, armored core, baldurs gate and Alan Wake.
Glad their are options for those that are less enthused about another bloated, safe, samey, teenage spider boy game.
@Cashews lots of them, to be honest. Such problems only affects Souls-likes. And to be honest I am kinda tired of this sub-genre and wish devs made more traditional action games with non-souls battle system.
The lords of the fallen looks good.another game to look forward to.word up son
@nitram2k11 Demon's. Sorry, pet peeve. I can't help it.
People need to remember the first one wasn’t great, very very clunky. So this I think is being over hyped. Not sure at all it will deliver
@dschons I thank you sir, post now amended.
the game's unique dual-world mechanic
It's impressive, yes, but the concept behind it is not entirely unique. One example is the Soul Reaver trilogy, which had as central pillar (pun intended) exactly the dual worlds mechanic. You could switch from physical to spirit realms at any time or upon death, and back again only at full life and at specific points. And the spirit realm was overlapping the physical one, it was actually a twisted version of it. Useful for traversals and puzzles. Sound familiar?
And those 3 games hit the market around 20 years ago, 1999-2003.
Don't get me wrong I can hardly wait for Lords of the fallen to launch in October, i'm more hyped for it than for Starfield or Spiderman 2... But I don't like borderline false advertisings....
I absolutely love that most games are souls like now! No sarcasm.
They should have called this game Lords of the Fallen 2: Sorry About Lords of the Fallen 1.
First game felt as slow as Gameloft’s Dungeon Hunter on old iOS. Don’t do that again!
Looks like the downgraded the graphics, or this is the ps5 version, and past videos were on PC maxed out. This looks like a ps4 game.
I’d pick this up day one, over the beige garbage that is the latest Assassins Creed or Spider-Man.
Gamers are so basic.
