Sony has today announced the retro-inspired PS5, PS4 RPG Sea of Stars will launch straight into PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium on its release date of 29th August 2023. It will be part of the August 2023 service refresh, arriving at the end of the month, and you can get a taste of it right now with a demo available on the PS Store. Details on the game's traversal system can be read over on the PlayStation Blog.
Level designer Philippe Dionne said: "It’s incredible for us to imagine how many more players worldwide will experience Sea of Stars and join the conversation around our project. After working on this game that is so dear to us for five years, we’re now only a few weeks away from release, and we’re happy to share this moment with the PlayStation community."
The full PS Plus Extra and PS Plus Premium lineup for August 2023 will be confirmed on 8th August 2023, with Sea of Stars as one of its headliners. If you don't have an active membership, it'll cost $34.99. The game comes from studio Sabotage, which previously made The Messenger. Are you happy you won't have to pay a penny extra to play this RPG? Let us know in the comments below.

Wow pretty cool
Very nice, the game gives me major Chrono Trigger vibes
So they’ve got a nice bag from both PS and Xbox for their subscription services.
I enjoyed the demo so looking forward to jumping in next month.
The demo was really good, so I'm rooting for this game to do well.
Isnt this also going to Game Pass day one as well? Intresting...that would probably be the first time thats ever happened. Besides the point, this looks awesome.
Well this is actually nice. Nothing for me to do here, so moving along
I can’t wait to play this!
This is great news, was going to pre order this soon but now I don't have too, thanks Sony 👍.
This is going to be great!
This is the kind of psplus release I'm talking about. If I enjoy the game, I'm sure to get the physical version down the line as well.
this game looks like it will be something special!
This is awesome! I adore The Messenger, and Sea of Stars is easily one of my most anticipated games of this year.
Loved the demo. This was a game I had marked down as my next most wanted GP title, and sort of an excuse partially redeeming that service.. I guess that's done now. I really hope Starfield ends up being good..
Well this is good news!
I kick started this one, so getting my code and physical nonetheless
Rad, was planning on buying this day one. Maybe I'll save my money for a physical copy to put on my shelf, or pick up a Switch copy.
So ps+ extra and gamepass day 1 blimey
N.i.c.e. im about to download sea of stars now.i been wanted to play this game.more rpgs is welcome.word up son
Nice, I did like the look of this.
Awesome!! One of my most anticipated titles this year. The messenger was amazing and I'll be v excited to see how they do an rpg. Looks like a homage to Chrono Trigger and Secrets of Mana
While I’m always happy to see day one drops idk if this one is for me personally… but I’m excited for the people who are excited.. guess I just need to shut up and play the demo before I judge
Whenever I see titles like this I miss the Vita
Wow. It’s never bad to have options between PS+ and Gamepass, I suppose.
Ironically, Nintendo was the one that started promoting the game and I doubt it’ll be on NSO.
I really enjoyed The Messenger, plus Vincent Jones from Aether Realm is helping with the audio, so that's another reason to play in my books.
Excellent! so many games, so little time.... nice problem to have!
That is great! Things like this make the service worth it to me. I was just looking to preorder this game last night. Awesome
I don't think this was necessary, this game was going to sell well on PS and I don't need things to be "free" to play them because I actually care about the devs making money lol.
I guess this shows how bad The Messenger sold and for them if something that good didn't sell there was a chance it could happen again.
Since it's on the Extra and Premium tiers, it means you don't own it - only rent it while it's on the service. Wonder how long they'll keep it there, and how many will finish it while it's available.
Perhaps they're hoping in addition to whatever revenue they get for putting it on the service, they hope to get sales once it leaves from fans who don't want it to go and want to keep playing.
Without knowing the contractual details of how the developers get paid for these deals, it's hard to speculate...at least to speculate wisely, with anything other than gut instinct.
This was a Day 1 for me anyway so this is probably the best news I could have gotten from PlayStation for August.
People who whine about games going digital, how they'll quit gaming when it happens.. .they're ok with some elements of it. Happy to not buy a disc when it suits them.
I just laugh because I won't ever buy a disc for any of my media....others... selective outrage. The NIMBYs of gaming.
Looking forward to this one 👍
Awesome, can't wait to play it. So far all the PS + day 1 releases have been great. So I'm sure I'm gonna enjoy this one as well.
I backed it, so I'll have a PS digital code on day one And the physical copy for Switch when that lands. The option to mix platforms is nice.
Glorious!! That will be a hit!!
That's great news!
I'm waiting for a physical release on Switch, until then I'll play it on PS5. I loved the demo!
@Gamer_Guy don't forget about those that claim subscriptions are bad and they rather support the devs by buying their games instead. I'm sure some of the people expressing happiness over this have stated such things about rival subscription services.
