PS5 hardware sales spiked an impressive 116 per cent year-over-year in Europe during June, as Sony’s console continues to make up for the shortfall it experienced due to stock shortages in the aftermath of the pandemic. The next-gen console has absolutely rocketed in 2023, and is likely to end the year even stronger due to the rumoured release of a revised hardware model. With both the Nintendo Switch and Xbox Series X|S posting small slumps last month, the PS5 was comfortably Europe’s best-selling system.
Software is also selling really well on the console: Diablo 4 – which is now the second fastest selling game of the year, behind Hogwarts Legacy – naturally performed best on PC, but almost 80 per cent of F1 23’s sales were on PlayStation platforms, and approximately 60 per cent of Street Fighter 6’s purchases were on PS5 and PS4 as well. Obviously, as a timed exclusive, all of Final Fantasy 16’s sales were on PS5, although its overall sales were 20 per cent less than Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which admittedly launched to a larger install base.
As for accessories and peripherals, the DualSense remains the best-selling controller, while PS Store top-up cards are also the most purchased vouchers on the market. All of this will prove reassuring reading for Sony, with its console comfortably on top in Europe across a multitude of metrics.
European Software Physical and Digital Top 10 (June 2023)
- Diablo 4
- Final Fantasy 16
- FIFA 23
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom*
- Grand Theft Auto 5
- EA Sports F1 23
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Street Fighter 6
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

Christmas 2023 is going to do record numbers at this rate especially with Spider-Man 2
@number1024 This data includes all digital data apart from Nintendo. Unfortunately, the reason for that is because Nintendo refuses to share that information.
What discourse surrounding playstation?
PS5 continuing to sell gangbusters. I thought this gen console sales ratio v Xbox would be MUCH closer but it's continuing to push towards 2:1
Not at all surprised the ps5 is selling like hot cakes, I was lucky enough to get mine at launch and haven't looked back ,an absolutely awesome console and coupled with the fantastic dualsense and the rest of ps5's advantages its purely brilliant in my humble opinion and we haven't seen really what it's capable of as yet, pandemic playing it's part in disruption of course ,but with so many great games to play already ,the future with ps5 is looking marvellous to say the least and I haven't even got a psvr2 yet either but I'll get 1 towards Christmas
PS5 is rightfully doing well and they bought zero publishers to get there. They don't give out their games for pennies on the dollar, either. Bring on Spider-Man 2!
@Wheatly
What Microsoft doesn't want anyone to think about when they cry about console competition being hard is they release their games simultaneously on PC, which eliminates the need to even own an Xbox. They argued that they should be able to keep up with Sony on console while also releasing in more places. Somehow they won that anemic argument.
@KaijuKaiser The deal hasn't closed yet.
Not for long they won't. Day one GamePass COD and Starfield will change everything.
Also, they had an almost 100€ discount in most countries for the disc version.
Sad to see FF16 20% lower than FF7R, but I just hope it keeps selling a bit better or it ends up being profitable. All the negativity surrounding surely hasn't helped.
@Sil_Am not gonna happen
Day 1 ps5 here and pc getting second ps5 for the wife now !
Honestly more shocked that Fifa 23 is still selling that much right before EA releases a new game saying that GTA5 is still selling better than most new releases too crazy when you consider its 10 years old.
Come on, Sony, haven’t you learned your lesson? If you don’t start losing some ground to big green, they’ll have to buy more multi-platform developers. You know, so they can bring more games to more players.
After Spidey2 this year, what's next for PS in 2024. Off the top of my head can only think of Silent Hill 2 and Rise of Ronin which ain't PS 1st party. When's the next big 1st party triple A from PS next year for helping to maintain a momentum. Maybe they're having an off year with many games just not ready for 2024 requiring much more time in the oven. 2024 might be an off year for PS 1st party so it can make 25, 26 and 27 shine and be the best high quality experiences. Sort of nice to see a slightly better more overall number for the charts even though its still missing plenty of important numbers
If you want a successful Sony, you want a competitive XBOX. I don't get the XBOX bashing from some posters.
A weak XBOX will just bring complacency and laziness from Sony.
Look at what happened to Intel.
So if you're a Sony fan (and I am one) I want to see a successful and competitive XBOX.
@naruball why sad? FF7R was on ps4 aswell FF16 isnt
@Beerheadgamer82 Yeah, we don't know what's lined up for 2024 1st party wise, as you say, maybe nothing AAA will be ready in time, but they'll start the year strong with 3rd party FF7 Rebirth at least.
@Beerheadgamer82 Concord (the live service game) is scheduled for 2024 and MLB The Show is annual so there'll be a new game around March/April 2024. Apart from those, we know nothing about 1st party PS in 2024.
My guess would be like 2023 there being a strong 3rd party lineup, Insomniac closes the year with a big 1st party single player game but the rest of the 1st party lineup being live service.
Just in case anyone in the UK is looking to get a tub o' lard, The Game Collection have some staggering deals on console + 2 controllers:
https://www.thegamecollection.net/ps5/consoles
Not sure if it's a misprint as that's £40 less for 2 controllers? And why would you buy the digital only for the same money?
@Dravenkaze because it's a new game and imo deserves to sell much better than a remake (even if both games are great).
@GreatAuk a weak xbox still brought a series of fantastic ps4 exclusives. The whole complacency thing doesn't make sense. If they don't make great games, people won't buy first party games. And they've learned that no matter how well you do, everything can change in a second and you can even go bankrupt (e.g. wii/ps3).
@GreatAuk everybody wants a competitive Microsoft. I own a series S so of course I want the best for it.
But why does Microsoft have to spend £69billion to take games away from PlayStation to compete? Why can’t it keep releasing good games from its own internal talent it has?
@KaijuKaiser I personally don’t care about CoD. That being said I found some metrics on how many PS users play it and it’s quite a lot. So I could see why it would be threatening.
It’s too bad there just couldn’t be some sort of stipulation for acquisition of a large dev that their previously cross gens IPs remain ultimately cross gen. Or a timed exclusive for the owner if it was an acquired company with over X number of sales for popular IPs.
I wish Sony would’ve somehow leveraged Bethesdas Elder Scrolls and Fallout in this Activision buyout. Ie keep those as simply timed exclusives since they’ve been available across the board the whole time and we’ll step back from you buying Activision.
Xbox has needed some big hitters so I’m not entirely against their acquisition of other devs, but walling off previously hugely popular IPs is where I don’t like it. If it was a new IP like Starfield that’s one thing. Go ahead keep it.. but to deprive us of future fallouts and elder scrolls. Arrrrghhhh
Playstation 5 is unstoppable. It'll outsell Xbox 4 to 1, if it continues like that.
I really need an update for upcoming Playstation 5 games though. What's after Spider-Man 2 from Sony first party?
@Grumblevolcano @Intr1n5ic forgot to mention StellaBlade for next year too, not 1st party of course but looks a promising fun game as another possible timed exclusive?
@PsBoxSwitchOwner
My comment was more a general statement, not necessarily an approval of the acquisition. I'm not sure how I feel about the acquisition. I know my position sounds boring but like everything in the real world and not how they are portrayed on the internet, things are nuanced and complex.
Ideally Microsoft doesn't have to buy other studios to be competitive. For example the Ori games were fantastic and they were developed internally.
And I disagree with @naruball with regards to competition. The PS4 succeeded because they got their butt whipped with the PS3. That was the catalyst to getting Sony to refocus on their mission.
I know in the end both the PS3 and 360 sold similar amount of consoles, but the XBOX 360 sales exploded (almost 4 times more console sales) compared to the original XBOX while the PS3 sold only half as many as the PS2 sales figures.
That's a failure. I honestly believe that without a successful XBOX 360, we wouldn't have the successful PS4.
I personally think MS will leave console space.
This is why they have been on spending spree.
They will become another Steam/Epic.
Time will tell.
If I’m a casual considering a console and looking at games available, and the “big” options are Starfield or Spider-man, the answer is obvious.
Microsoft: Crap, who can we buy next!?!
Sony on top 👑 love to see this
@Sekijo I think we all wanted them to be competitive but we all would have liked to have seen them makes something original in-house not but up a developer or publisher to keep the sequels to franchises that already showed up Multiplatform.
The whole reason I haven't bought Outer Worlds is that I will never get to play a sequel.
@Sekijo so happy to hear people enjoying it. I know I'll have a blast with it!
@Beerheadgamer82 That's currently scheduled for this year, not next year. I'd imagine it'll reappear in the next State of Play.
@GreatAuk realistically, what exactly do you expect Sony to do now (or to have been doing the last couple of years) other than making great games that take ages to come out? People who say they are complacent, imo, don't understand how long modern games take to make. Especially when it's quality after quality game.
They're making partnerships (Sackboy's big Adventure), paying for exclusives (never liked the practice, but alas) and are making excellent first party games, including PSVR2 games.
If MS were more competitive, in your opinion, what would have changed?
Hopefully Xbox and Nintendo push Playstation hard to ensure never ever slips back into that PS3 complacency. I have seen a little of that under JIm Ryan and I hope it doesn't continue because I want new single player IP and not just an over realiance on exsisting IP.
I am happy with my digital PS5 but I may pick up the slim version if it does come out later this year. I would like something with a smaller footprint and the option to add on the disc drive should I want to play what will be ever cheapening PS5 disc games.
@naruball you’re so correct! I will never get the “lazy Sony/arrogantly Sony” noise people spew. Sony always has the biggest variety of exclusives and genres whether or not MS is strong.
It doesn’t incentivize Sony to slack off if MS struggles. Hell, it’s more reason to forge ahead. At no time has Sony become complacent in the game. The biggest mistake I can think of is “Get a 2nd job to buy one…”
AMD Ryzen 8000 “Strix Point” APU Spotted With 12 Zen 5 Cores, 24 Threads, RDNA 3.5 GPU
https://wccftech.com/amd-ryzen-8000-strix-point-apu-spotted-12-zen-5-cores-24-threads-rdna-3-5-gpu/
Take a look at the AMD STRIX POINT HALO. I think this could be the apu for PS5 Pro.
@naruball I don't think Sony is complacent or lazy (at the moment.) I'm saying I don't want them to become like that one day because of a lack of competition. That hurts us the players. Nobody thought Intel would ever get lazy either but they did.
Sony is still pushing strong because they still have momentum from their blockbuster PS4 console.
I do think that if the latest XBOX systems were neck and neck with the PS4 and/or PS5, we would have less remakes and remasters and more original content and more risk taking.
It be crazy if Sony buy a publisher themselves and have another showcase this year.
@GreatAuk Xbox doesn’t want to compete they just want to buy.
@4kgk2 I think that's their way of competiting, which I have said is not ideal.
@AhmadSumadi This comment makes no sense because that would mean theoretically, the best way to drive the maximum amount of innovation and creativity would be to eliminate all the competition.
No competition means you don't have to try as hard, this is simple economics and the reason we have anti-monopoly laws.
@GreatAuk but the competition has never not existed. Think of it as a boxing match. When you’re opponent is down you don’t lean back and relax. You go harder and do the most you can. MS has never been so down and out that Sony can become lax and rest on its laurels. But people seem to thinks that’s happened at some point for some reason.
@4kgk2 there’s really no one that mind-blowing that Sony can afford. If it’s not Rockstar or Square I think people’s disappointment would overshadow anything they’d present.
@AhmadSumadi I will agree the video game industry is different from other industries as laziness and complacency is a little harder to get away with compared to other industries.
I also don't think Sony is lazy or complacent (yet.) I do think though that if the XBOX One was more competitive, we would see more risks from Sony and less remakes/remasters.
As much as I love games from older generations, I'd rather see exciting new IPs. Developers are a finite supply, if you have people working on remakes and remasters, you have less people working on new IPs.
@Sil_Am no it won't 😂 as long as people can still get COD on a Sony console they'll be staying. And no ones switching for Starfield. Especially when it can be played through the cloud service so you don't even have to buy the console.
@GreatAuk great comment, exactly.
FF7 Rebirth and Wolverine are scheduled for 2024.
I hope there is more, aside of Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin.
@Beerheadgamer82 Next Sony owned property I believe is Helldivers 2
@GreatAuk definitely but that's not up to Sony but in MS.
@Grumblevolcano Helldivers 2 (owned by sony) is also this fall
@JAMes-BroWWWn right after spider man is Helldivers 2
@lets_do-this_1999 totally agree mate, what with the pandemic holding everything back. The PS5 definitely has more power under the hood. I did buy PSVR2 at launch still hoping for Astrobot.
@GreatAuk "I do think that if the latest XBOX systems were neck and neck with the PS4 and/or PS5, we would have less remakes and remasters and more original content and more risk taking."
But who would be making those games exactly? All of their teams are already hard at work. They already have "second-party" studios. What more can they do? Buy more companies and publishers to keep xbox players from enjoying the games that were being made in the first place?
