Details and screenshots have leaked for PS5 console exclusive Rise of the Ronin via a Discord server run by the former insider The Snitch. We won't be hosting the images here, but click through to view them. They feature a look at the map, a quest description, and what looks like symbols for a skill tree. The game from Team Ninja is then described as a mix of Assassin's Creed, Ghost of Tsushima, and Dark Souls.
It's then claimed item descriptions link into the lore fuelling the wider world (ala every FromSoftware title since Demon's Souls), but the design of side quests is a lot more like the Ubisoft formula. You'll be able to pick between various difficulty options, there will be skill and technique trees, and you'll be able to choose between quality and performance mode to fine-tune the experience. Romance options will also be a thing, and the game is planned for release in Q1 of next year.
If the title really is aiming to launch in early 2024, then there's a good chance we'll see more of it this year — perhaps in a State of Play livestream or another PlayStation Showcase. Rise of the Ronin was always slated to come out next year, but this leak suggests it'll be in the first few months. For now, we know the game is an open world action RPG from the team behind Nioh and Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty.

Incredibly excited for this! It looks brilliant!
Oh yeah definitely on my watch list
Team Ninja has really been cranking out games at a fast pace the last few years. Surprisingly they've mostly all been at least pretty good. This one looks right up my alley though. Really looking forward to it.
Honestly, everything in that description makes me more interested in the title. I’m not a huge fan of Team Ninja’s previous works (I’m not much of a Souls guy, though there’s certain Souls games I do like), but this looks like it’s got the potential to be a little more “for everyone,” so to speak.
Very hyped for this games, just hope it's not a lootfest like Nioh and Stranger of Paradise. A more streamlined loot system is better that diablo style billion drops.
SONY games like GOT, HFW and GOW have already mastered gear acquisition and progression.
Team Ninja are my favourite developer, love ninja gaiden, nioh and wo long. Wo long was maybe a little too easy. But 2 things got me sweating a little
1. "Numerous side-quests that are more like Ubisoft side-quest designs" - That doesn't sound good, at all
2. The map full of map markers/map vomit has got some serious Ubisoft vibes about it - again not good, at all
I would prefer if this wasnt open world but I have faith this will be good. Team Ninja don't let me down too often.
Just please don't make it some casual friendly, barely-a-team-ninja-game, open world collect-a-thon with icons and fetch quests everywhere. For the love of god no!
Oooh, we should hear more about this soon, then!
Looking forward to seeing more of this game.
Release window can be easely updated.
Remember those rumors in 2020-2021 about Elden Ring being 100% done and ready?
Hopefully Team ninja will do something on top of their usual quality, because
A. This is open world and it is their first if I'm not mistaking
B. Narrative should be better as this is usually their weakest point recognized even by fans.
C. This is supervised by Sony directly. It will get a go when it is ready.
I love all things samurai, but this sounds like every other AAA game. Open-world, Ubisoftish side quests, Souls reference, par-for-course.
I'll wait for reviews and maybe it'll scratch an itch while I wait for more Jin Sakai.
Will it have demons, though?! Ancient Team Ninja theorists say, “yes!”
Sony continues to feed us good boys 👍.
@get2sammyb do you think we will be getting a another showcase or big state of play by the end of year?
What was the point of the item description point? Does that mean the story is going to be almost bare bones and non existent like a soulsbourne too? Every game has item descriptions lol, some just more extensive than others
Now that XVIs out, FF7 Rebirth and this are my most anticipated games. Hopefully we see more of it soon
Looking forward to this since I first saw it, Q1 2024 would be great.
I'm more interested in this now that I see difficulty options will be a thing and it's leaning less into the Souls formula. As much as I like Team Ninja, I've never been able to click with their recent Souls-like games. Rise of the Ronin sounds much more like the game I was hoping it would be.
I hope that AC Japan game is set in the 1500's, then ROTR, AC: Red and Ghost of Tsushima will all be set in different eras about 200 years apart. That'd be a hell of a historical video game marathon!
I love Assassin's Creed, Ghost of Tsushima & Elden Ring. Needless to say, I hope this turns out to be really well done as it sounds perfect for me.
Japanese studios be dominating right now as well, along with making things even more accessible to all (and increasing sales) without completely losing their own individuality and identity. Most games I buy, play and end up loving in recent times are from a Japanese studios. And western studios are making even more games based in Asian culture too. It's really cool to see!
Lost me at dark souls
Geez... it looked interesting but if it's by team ninja so... it's gonna be a boring loot fest that will take half the game time in it's inventory management.
@Toot1st Same. I don’t understand the love those games get.
N.i.c.e.rise of the ronin is going to be a instant classic.word up son
Defo hyped for this ever since they showed the trailer, it feels like Team Ninjas magnum opus, which they openly shared SIE have helped them produce. Sony prod values blended with Team Ninja in an open world 'grounded' setting, YES.
Depends on which of those three titles they lean more into. If Dark Souls, I'm all for it. GoT, ehh, maybe. AC, kill it with fire.
Even that image alone makes me drool over this game.
Really looking forward to this was one of the reasons why I bought my PS5. Hope Rise of the Ronin doesn’t release early next year as that’s when FFVII remake Rebirth and Persona 3 remake come out. Also Lost soul aside is apparently an early next year game as well. Wonder when we’ll see a trailer for this and Wolverine
@Toot1st I’ve heard the game will play more like Ghost of Tsushima and AC over dark souls
@Gaia093 The game has actually confirmed to have been in development for seven years so I wouldn’t be too surprised if they do release it early next year
@Blacksmith1985 This has actually been said to have been in development for seven years though. So this has been in development before Elden ring was even announced. Wouldn’t be too surprised if Rise of the ronin does come out early next year
@Dragoon1994 nice hope so
