Emmy-nominated HBO adaptation The Last of Us remains in production limbo, with its eagerly anticipated second season continuing to feel the effects of the ongoing Writer's Guild of America strikes. While the jury's out on when or if strikers' demands will be met, showrunner and series co-creator Craig Mazin managed to submit the script for next season's first episode just before the clock struck midnight.
Speaking to Deadline, Mazin was asked how things had been progressing before pens were thrown down in strike solidarity: "We got pretty far. Actually, we were doing great. Neil [Druckmann] and I had been sitting and talking with Halley Gross, who also worked on the second game as a writer, and Bo Shim, the new writer... We know what the whole season is, and I was actually able to write and submit the first episode right before the deadline hit."
Stopping work on something like The Last of Us can't be easy, regardless of the cause. But with Hollywood studios pulling moves that range from cartoonishly evil to outright Machievelliean, sometimes enough is enough. Mazin just hopes they can get the show out sometime near its projected 2025 release window. He describes the way he's been passing the days, engaging in what is (hopefully) still a union-approved activity:
"I’m just walking around kind of brain-writing, I guess, which I don’t think is scabbing. I take walks, and I think through the scenes because when the bell rings and this is over because the companies have finally come to their senses, I’m going to have to basically shoot myself out of a cannon because we really want to try and get this show on the air when it’s supposed to be on the air."
For what it's worth, we don't think brain-writing constitutes scabbing and have gained a new appreciation for why Mr Mazin is in such demand in Hollywood; we'll be adding "brain-writing" to our own internal lexicon; thank you very much. When do you think we do see the premiere of TLoU season two? Make bold predictions in the comments section below.

The strike could actually help the aging of the actors between seasons, possibly matching the time jump between games.
I really enjoyed the first season, despite a quick run to the final moments in the last few episodes.
Strike could also help ND to make decent progress on part 3. It would be better IMO for the game trilogy to be wrapped up before they try and make a 3rd series of the TV show - we've all seen the impact that catching up and overtaking the books had on Game of Thrones
@Rob_230 Totally agree. Naruto Ultimate Ninja Storm 3 had to take some ‘creative liberties’ as the games story had overtaken the anime/manga. It turned out fine but wouldn’t want that to happen to TLOU.
It’s one of the reasons why it makes perfect sense for Part 2 to be split into 2 seasons.
Give ND as much time as possible for Part 3 & don’t rush them.
tbh with such a perfect story I think it would be best to let it be. A true classic not tainted by the attempts to rake in even more fortunes with needless sequals.
They didn't fall foul of that with the game so why do it with the TV series..... oh wait.
@Rob_230
They've already said that the events of part 2 will be covered over more than one season so Naughty Dog already has plenty of time if they are actually making a 3rd.

Personally, I still have not seen the first series. I decided to wait until the 4K Blu-ray release (which was yesterday here in the UK), but my copy did not arrive! 😒
With regards to the second series. Have to say I'm disappointed it won't be out until 2025. Without trying to sound morose, I was told I'd be lucky if I saw my 60th birthday, which just happens to be in about 5 months time, so 2025 seems an awfully long way away! 😜
With that said, I can see myself being still further disappointed, as my hope was that at least the second series would cover events not seen in the games. Stuff that could have happened during the time jump we saw between the first and second games. Time jumps in television series are never really satisfying, and with the 'need' for the actors to age to be more like those in the game, and the possibility of more than just three series (including events from the third game), filling that time jump with a second or third series, before then covering the events of the second game in perhaps the fourth season, seemed an ideal solution. Still might happen, I guess. At this time I assume only a handful of people actually know. Just have to hope that I can hang on long enough to see the series concluded... 😂
I'm just happy to have some time to catch up on shows and hope the scriptwriters get better conditions. Maybe the a lister stars should also take a heavy cut to their paychecks to show solidarity.
Can't wait for Part II: Remastered.
What will release first;
TLOU 2 part 2
or
Avatar part 5
🤷
Hopefully they don't try to cram production and shooting into a smaller window than planned just to make their original release. That's my only concern with the strike... Earn deserved gains and protections from the studios just for everyone to overwork themselves trying to meet somewhat arbitrary targets. Until then though... huelga!
Still, I fell off mid way through 1st season so not too concerned over this one. Looking forward to more games!
@CKFilms I don't think Bella Ramsey will change at all, not one iota.
