The Making of Karateka is a playable documentary dedicated to Karateka, a game designed by Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner while he was still in college and released in 1984. It was incredibly ahead of its time in terms of narrative design, and this intriguing take on the documentary will allow players to experience multiple versions of the game, in addition to the story of how it all came together.
Developed by Digital Eclipse, The Making of Karateka is the first entry in the studio's planned Gold Master Series, which are independently produced projects with the intention to celebrate the designers and studios which shaped the current gaming landscape. Last year's Atari 50: The Anniversary Celebration was apparently something of a prototype, which performed well enough for further and more specific explorations.
Digital Ecplise describes the title in an overview thusly: "Discover how Karateka was made through an exhaustive archive of design documents, playable prototypes, and all-new video features. Like walking through a museum, you can explore the interactive timelines at your own pace." It will include multiple entire versions of the game, including a freshly remastered take made especially for this occasion.

If they were looking for a way to get me to play Karateka again, they’ve found it. A brilliant idea, and hopefully for fans of crusty old games like me, just the beginning.
One of the first games I ever played on Apple IIe, and definitely the first game I ever beat! This is an amazing idea and I will definitely pick this up.
That's an amazing idea and would love to see this be the norm for retro releases. Can't wait for this.
Absolutely great idea. l played Karateka endlessly on my C64. Next do Bruce Lee.
@CVCubbington yes bruce lee was epic on the c64 along with ik+ and the last ninja games...
It would help if there was some indication as to whether this is purely an announcement, if a release is imminent, or if it’s actually available now.
Off to Google it is.
Greeeeaaaat! Come on, give me documentary about Exolon, Green Beret, Dizzy, Ikari Warriors, Dynamite Dan, Booty, Manic Miner, Lode Runner, Hero Quest, Jet Pac, Salamander, Nether Earth, Double Dragon... I take them ALL! 😀
Love this idea!
@djlard oooh can i add delta,armalyte,cybernoid 1 and 2 plus zynaps👍
@Northern_munkey ik+ consumed hours of my life.
My first computer games is prince of persia (if I remember correctly), I actually know karateka after I played prince of persia. I think prince of persia is way better though considering it sort of sequel to karateka.
Such a neat idea! I wish Sega would have done this before with the Sega Ages series.
I never played karateka and I would like to try it!
The narrative take on gameplay was really ahead of its time. I played the NES version, that was good for a fighting game in that console. I hope they do this type of release for Pitfall, Hero and Adventure.
