Final Fantasy 16 was always going to have a tough fight on its hands against The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and the two exclusives are indeed duking it out for number one. Well, in the UK's physical sales data, at least. Square Enix's action epic has shifted from first to second, trading places with the Nintendo sequel.
Meanwhile, God of War Ragnarok has been keeping things pretty steady, hovering around the middle of the top 10 for many weeks now. It's currently in fourth place, just below new arrival AEW: Fight Forever. Another new release, Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life, shows up in seventh, while Sonic Origins Plus, which debuted in third last week, is currently in 10th.
Here's the latest physical top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 1st July, 2023
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- Final Fantasy 16
- AEW: Fight Forever
- God of War Ragnarok
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- FIFA 23
- Story of Seasons: A Wonderful Life

- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2

God of Charts!
I'm surprised to see AEW Fight Forever debut so highly.
@Markatron84 I read that as how few physical sales you need to get on the charts after the handful of AAA releases. Remember when Gollum made the charts despite selling nothing?
I'm guessing only Final Fantasy and Zelda sold anything meaningful this week.
Jesus has mario kart 8 ever left the top 10 🤔🤔
Hope FF16 is performing a bit better digitally. I haven't played it yet, but sounds like an amazing game and it deserves to sell well or else we may not get any games like it in the future (most JRPGs are fine, but their budget tends to be small and it shows).
There are a few more GoW: R PS5 bundles doing the rounds for the same price as the stand-alone console (e.g. ShopTo, Game Collection, etc.) so not surprised it's rising.
Tears of the Kingdom is a monster. Didn't expect FFXVI to be displaced again so soon.
I still think that the release date for FF16 in summer was bad. FF15 released in November, clearly a better fit for a dozens-hours single player adventure.
@PixelDragon Yes they are included. Even if the console bundle just has a digital code it still counts as a boxed physical release. That is why God of War is so high again in the charts.
Not even two weeks? FFXVI is all hype.
Go on blame me, I've just bought Zelda
I'll get around to Tears of the Kingdom, one day maybe. Just got Ganon to beat in the main quests for Breath of the Wild. Really enjoying FFXVI, Just reached the capital looking forward to seeing where it's heading, aside from the obvious extremely awesome Dominants duking it out.
@Max_the_German wouldn't that work against Zelda, too, though?
@Moonmonkey It's another fantastic game, so the more people get it, the merrier.
@Markatron84 I think they're quite popular with wrestling fans in the UK. Got a wembley stadium show coming up.
If I understand correctly (after a quick Goggle search) then Nintendo's digital game sales make up about 50% of games sold, versus 70% for Sony. So the physical sales charts will heavily favor Nintendo every time.
Say what you want about wrestling fans but they are die hard lol.
Can't wait to play FF16 once I complete Ragnarok, but it seems to have come and gone with little more than a wimper, and the hype just hasn't been there at all. Square cant be happy.
How long are we guessing until they come out and say it did not meet sales expectations?
@naruball Zelda probably came early enough, as a Nintendo game its chances for becoming an evergreen are pretty high, and with its creative potential chances for becoming a phenomenon were also significant.
Physical game charts is a pretty niche market these days. It's mostly bundles and Switch releases. Why don't we get digital weekly charts?
@dimi because those numbers are hard or impossible to come by.
Platforms don’t like to report digital game sales, Sony does not let third party sell digital codes, so digital sales data would be limited to few retailers that be willing to report their share of digital code sales for Xbox and switch games. Would still not count games purchased on the consoles themselves.
Only games we end up getting reliable sales data for are successful ones were the publisher decided to brag by releasing numbers.
What are people thoughts? FFXVI or TotK? FF is starting to sound grindy , and I liked BotW back in the day. I could always save myself £50 and get the FF6 pixel remaster😂
People overrate how popular Final Fantasy is. FF7 remake still hasn’t sold 10 million yet with insane hype off a classic game.
For the typical drop jrpgs get in sales week 2, it's weird to see XVI still at number 2. I wouldve expected it somewhere around 6
Not even a little surprising that FF would swap spots with Zelda. We’re talking about an M-rated game that’s exclusive to an expensive home console that’s only just started to hit its stride, versus a storied first-party release for one of the top-selling video game systems of all time, that’s just about all-ages. Not exactly an apples to apples comparison.
If it drops from the 2nd spot next week, that might be a little concerning, I suppose. Still wouldn’t be atypical for Final Fantasy, though, I imagine. I guess some people are trained to think that you have to sustain being #1 to be worthwhile now?
@Max_the_German but previous Zelda games didn't become evergreen, unlike other Nintendo games.
@Max_the_German It's funny to me how people may think FF releasing at this or that time affects sales. There was a time, not that long ago, when all but a small handful of publishers would have feared to go against the FF series at any time of year. It was a juggernaut. Now it isn't. Tastes have changed and SE isn't near a top-tier company.
Autumn release dates were more important when it was only parents buying games for their kids.
@Cashews Maybe it’s just me, but in summer I play less and also more lightweight games, which can be enjoyed in smaller bites. Funny enough, it’s the same with meals. So both the several-course meal at the restaurant and the dialog-heavy adventure game are both better digested when it’s colder outside. Now it’s the time to spend more time outside!
@Cashews 3m in a few days is most certainly a juggernaut. The difference is that nowadays we hear about GTA selling 150m, God of War selling 20m, Mario Kart selling (I don't know) 60m that even 10m doesn't sound all that impressive, when in reality, it most certainly is. And FF16 is on par with FF sales (so far anyway).
@naruball only the next investor's call will say what the game is in terms of sales. Or the next one that encompasses the game's sales.
@Cashews indeed. No matter how it performs at first, it may not have long legs, so it remains to be seen if it turns out to be a success. But 3m copies in a few days is nothing short of incredible. Is it enough? Obviously not. It needs to keep selling.
