Baldur's Gate 3's meteoric rise off the back of its PC launch alone continues unabated, breaking fresh ground by the hour and blowing minds by the second. The monstrous CRPG has been eating well, already swimming with exclusive company, heralded as one of the best video games ever made (reaching the high benchmark for quality set by a younger BioWare with its predecessor). But now developer Larian Studios has something else to brag about: Baldur's Gate 3 has officially cracked Steam's top 10 most-played games list.
According to the exceedingly useful SteamDB, BG3 currently occupies the #9 slot on Steam's most-played games list (determined by peak player count), making it one of the most successful in the platform's history, with a peak of 814,666 concurrent players at the time of writing. This underdog upset appears to have pushed less-played games like Apex Legends, Valheim, and Call of Duty into the #11, #12, and #13 spots, respectively.

To break into the top 5, BG3 would need to unhorse the last mega-RPG to release, and one which didn't enjoy such a smooth launch: Cyberpunk 2077, which has an all-time peak of 1,054,388. The revolutionary and relatively recent Elden Ring occupies the #6 spot and will need to be dealt with first, however. FromSoftware and CD Projekt Red had better watch out; there's a new player in town and one gunning for the GOAT crown!
Where does the Baldur's Gate 3 rollercoaster end? Will it take true GOAT status away from PUBG? Place your bets in the comments section below.

Don't think so. This generation loves their online games and FPS. I'm just happy to see this kind of RPG do this well.
Tremendous accomplishment. Against all odds Baldurs Gate 3 surpasses...something called Goose Goose Duck apparently. I'm so gleefully ignorant to PC gaming.
This one is a doozy. A master play from Sony getting this on the PS5. Starfield might become an S-tear field. 😂
@Jayslow yeah I didn't want to investigate any further haha
Pretty impressive for a game in the CRPG genre.
I was watching a streamer I watch play it yesterday and it looks like a game I would like to play once.
There's always that one game that, even if it has decent hype like this did, surpasses everybody's wildest expectations. It looks like Baldur's Gate 3 will be that release for 2023. And we'll see how this prediction holds up (may age like milk) but I think it will take home the majority of overall Game of the Year awards.
Definitely thinking about picking this one up. I do wish it was out this month on console rather than the insanely stacked September. I'll be well into Starfield and heading towards eternights by that point
See, you can make an actual RPG instead of a corridor-bound action game and have it do well commercially and critically.
@Nem Microsoft strategy of having two very different SKUs and forcing devs to develop for both usually comes and bites them back at the weirdest momments possible.
I think people underestimate the hunger for a modern D&D game. I'm fighting my need for it because I want the PS5 version, but every clip that keeps slipping into my feed whittles away at my resolve.
Also, I wish I could say it was surprising to see Lost Ark's fall from grace be so complete, but that game became unplayable for anyone not at the very end of end-game or able to keep seven other people interested and organised enough to keeo progressing.
@Mintie absolutely. I think if you are insulated its the same small group of regular players but the last 10 years it has absolutely exploded in popularity
I kept saying that this game would be a masterpiece, and I think that, finally, people are starting to listen. Larian is, for me, the best Developer around. They are run by an enigmatic, charismatic, funny geek with a real love for the genre and the games they make. Divinity Original Sin 2 is, for me, the best game ever made, but even that game has had to step aside for the G.O.A.T that is Baldur's Gate 3.
BG3 is a special game. A once in a generation game that will be played for years and possibly decades to come. Well done Larian. I could not be happier for them...
What if this is as big as Starfield? Because the one thing I saw was people saying this would flop because Starfield would be releasing so close to it. As if to say a PS5 game will not sell because people are buying an Xbox game 🤷🏾♂️
N.i.c.e. im playing the incredible and one of the best games ever in divinity original sin enhanced edition right now.larian studio is amazing.word up son
If you think the first one is good, @playstation1995, then wait until you play the second one (assuming you haven't already)! The second game is my all time favourite game (until BG3, anyway). I highly recommend DoS2. It is a work of art...

I could not agree more. I was one of those folks that coughed up the money for early access 3 years ago on PC. I am dedicated PS player as I spend all of my time in front of a monitor for work and don't want to spend my gaming time there too. I played it for about 3 weeks all that time ago and almost spit out my coffee when it was announced for the PS5 in an early reveal. I immediately went and pre-ordered the console version. I did not mind double dipping on BG3 as I wanted to fully support Larian studios and put my money behind one of the best CRPG companies of all time. I have been playing it on PC for the past past week and wow...just stupendous. Now I just have to sit back and not play any more until September 3rd. Nice to know that it is cross play so that I can pick up my game right where I left off from the comfort of my recliner. I highly, highly recommend this game if you have any interest in RPGs or D&D. Fantastic piece of work. Thank you Larian Studios for going that extra mile.
Will play this on Xbox eventually. Probably not the worst thing for the Xbox version that it got delayed. Can play Starfield and then play this afterwards
I'm with you entirely, @Svark. I too bought the game in Early Access. Indeed, I bought (I think pre-ordered) it and then sat in the slowest download of all time when everyone tried to download the game the moment it released in EA at the same time on Steam. That was one very, very long download! 😂
I've actually triple-dipped as not only do I already own it in EA, but the moment it the PC Collector's Edition was announced, I bought that too, and then, when the PlayStation version of the Collector's Edition was announced, I bought that as well... 🤣
Those two Collector's Edition statues are going to look amazing in my front room. I'll also be buying the Xbox version of the game too (maybe even the Collector's Edition). In all honesty, Larian cannot take my money quicky enough. If I can show them my support, I will. Absolutely love Swen Vincke and his team. Cannot praise them highly enough...
@Fiendish-Beaver. I agree with you.i already know that im going to enjoy divinity original sin 2.it is already one of the best games ever made.im almost at the end of divinity original sin.my backlog.i got to many games to play.yeah divinity original 2 is definitely a amazing game.word up son
