Baldur's Gate 3 has had a monstrous launch on PC, with its passage into this plane of existence so powerful Steam itself was made to shake. Unsurprisingly, the positive buzz around this one has been infectious, and PlayStation players are eager to get to grips with it, pushing the RPG to the top of pre-order charts in the largest market in the world.
Industry analyst Beni-Sales reports that, seemingly purely out of envy for their PC brethren, Baldur's Gate 3 has rocketed to the top of PSN charts to become the #1 best-selling pre-order in the US. Benji says he doesn't expect to see the same kind of astronomical sales numbers PC players have been putting up from the PS5 launch on 6th September, which sounds like a challenge to us.
So long as Larian sticks the landing with DualSense support, fans of large, all-encompassing RPGs (that don't mind the slower pace of its turn-based combat) are in for another treat. Not bad for a scrappy, proudly independent studio out of Belgium, releasing what was until recently a relatively niche subgenre (CRPG), eh?
Who would have thought that taking all the time in the world to make a massive roleplaying experience (both single-player and cooperative) in the tradition of Mass Effect and Dragon Age, involving players by developing it in Early Access and releasing it only when it was finally ready, players would actually show up?
Are you surprised that (and we simply can't stress this enough) a Dungeons & Dragons CRPG, where combat is closer to being Final Fantasy Tactics or XCOM: Enemy Unknown than it is Skyrim or The Witcher 3? On PlayStation, in a year when Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is yet to launch? Let us know in the comments section below.

@KaijuKaiser, I can't believe it even got made! Different strokes, of course, it's like catnip to me, but yeah, not in a 1000 years would I have predicted this.
Kyle Bossman said the cover art is cheesy, and I completely disagree. I think it looks really cool, especially the white-haired Astarion smirking like a badass.
@KaijuKaiser I think it's because so many have been crying out for a really deep RPG that seems to have so many choices.
@KaijuKaiser they don't mind because for them it isn't boring lol. That's the great thing about having different tastes.
They deserve all the sales the game can have. The true "freedom" game.
I'm still upset there is no physical version. I'd be all over that. There is no way i'm buying digital at full price.
But, i do plan to get it when the price drops
It gives the opportunity to make a fantasy archetype that is made all the more special with quests, choices and consequences. Hasn’t been anything interesting that satisfies that choice of doing good, doing evil or doing psychotic.
This is looking like it may be one of the biggest launches in history and is fastly approaching the peak player count of Elden Ring.
Happy for Larian. For all the studios that came out and said this game was an anomaly and should not be considered a new standard......
Wrong..... This should absolutely be the new gold standard for rpgs and an example that a game can be a masterpiece, profitable, and still be consumer friendly. rather than developed around shareholder driven predatory design schemes and/or flashy bloated budget glorified playable movies. It's this level of gamer driven craft that brought this medium to where it is today or really once was before corporate investors reshaped things from passionate design to profit margin driven design.
This is interesting and I'm happy for Larian. Looking forward to this one. Gonna be a crowded fall for gaming: Baldur's Gate 3, Alan Wake II, Spider-Man 2, Stellar Blade (maybe), and yes Starfield too (even though I won't be playing it).
@Nem no physical? Well thats me out then as i refuse to pay sonys over priced psn store prices. Disgusting really as i dont play these kind of games but my interest was piqued enough to consider purchasing. Sorry larian but you get my cash when it hits sub £50 which will not happen for a long,long time.
@Northern_munkey Its £57.99 so if you get discounted PSN credit at 14% off it will be under £50.
For all who wonder: While there is no worldwide crying it doesn't mean world isn't thirsty for deep RPG games. If you look at gaming mass production now 99,9% is copy/paste junk.
Wont pick it up straight away as I always find turn based games a bit of a struggle to play and it’s out the same day as Starfield so I’ll wait for a bit and pick it up in a period when there’s nothing new out and can properly plough some time into it, but it’s great to see its success. Think it will do very well
I played the early access a while ago and updated to the full version yesterday but I've been playing Nier Automata instead. I know when I start BG3, that's it for a long time. I might as well have been abducted by aliens. It's nice to see an actual proper RPG do so well. The originals were received really well, and in some ways BG2 is like the FFVII of PC gaming, but they didn't shift loads of copies. They came out when 3D had been all the rage for a while so more casual members of the master race ignored them.
@ChrisDeku yeah, I am saving 20% on PS store because of this. Shopto I have reached Gold membership while ago, usually buying with 16% discount. And then with PS Stars i can get 4% back from official price. Deluxe version cost me around 52.79£
@NEStalgia Do you still think Baldur's Gate is niche and not mainstream?
Looking forward to Baldurs gate 3 on my ps5 not sure about dual sense controller,I am hoping my gaming keyboard and mouse will work .I think Sony should be getting on this and making playstation gaming keyboard and mouse so more game developers will put keyboard controls in the games .I've been gaming since the days of dungeon master on my Atari just love it can't wait for Balder's gate .
@ChrisDeku i'll keep an eye on it..thanks for the heads up 👍
@Khayl mate you should give it a try hours of good solid game play to test your gaming skill
@Northern_munkey buying this game would be worth it hours and hours of game play much better than spending out cash for a ten hour game you will get over 50 hours with this
It’s a pretty damn fun game. Really enjoying AAA-budget presentation in such a niche genre. Usually I can’t stand dnd games and while I definitely prefer original sin 2’s gameplay this ain’t too bad at all.
Elden Ring. TOTK. Now Baldur's Gate 3.
It's being proven time and again that when you try do something NEW, when you try to actually INNOVATE, when you take RISK, and provide players with an experience that they have not been able to get in any other game before, that the game will turn out to be a massive success and get univeral praise from players.
I hope Sony takes notes.
@grimgaming New? what are you talking about? Elden ring is basically Dark Souls 4, TOTK is BOTW2, Baldur's gate is DOS3 with dnd ruleset and forgotten realms lore. Elden ring and TOTK didn't risk anything. None of these are innovations. It's all evolution.
Preordered as soon as I could cant wait till the 2nd of September.
@saffeqwe
If you don't think any of these games are innovative, I don't know what to tell you
@KaijuKaiser we can argue endlessly about semantics - such as that the creativity and optionality that TOTK provides is on a completely different level than Fortnite, which is btw a completely different type of game, or that BG3 offers choices on a completely different level than anything that has ever been done before, but I still stand behind my point: these games push the industry forward, whether you’ll call it an evolution or a revolution is up to you, and that is a big contrast with all the ‘1.5 sequels’ that Sony has been putting out as of late
Noticed it climbing well into the UK sales top ten alongside FIFA (EAFC) pre orders too, which is kind of cool, as people don't even think about pre ordering FIFA, it's just muscle memory 😁
I might do with this what I did with Elden Ring, TOTK and FF16 not pre order, but then get envious and buy it on the day it comes out anyway 😅
I've been playing the Pathfinder game that I got as part of the Humble Bundle deal, to try and get me into the mindset of thorough and complex RPGs. I like to think I'm ready for this. Well, I hope...
@grimgaming
> us true exploration
That's how gaming worked pre ps3
> fusion and building
minecraft (especially moded), fortnite
> BG3 offers players unprecedented choice and outcome variety
Have you played crpgs? Have you played morrowind? Have you played at least divinity os?
@grimgaming
>these games push the industry forward
They do yes, but nothing of it is innovative. Even BOTW wasn't innovative
@Olmaz We'll see what the actual sales look like rather than "#1 preorder". Not quite sure what that really says, though if it's topping Spierman that's something.
I mean if Baldur's Gate is mainstream I want to shove it down YoshiP's "people only want to play action games" throat, though.
@KundaliniRising333 “ For all the studios that came out and said this game was Anomaly and should not be considered a new standard...... Wrong..... This should absolutely should be the new gold standard for rpgs”
While I some what agree. The game that Larian built is something that 85% of studios will not be able to achieve. This is years of building a studio and hiring the right people to build something like this. As well as having the passionate fan base to support the project through early access. I don’t think it fair to push this level on to other studios
@KaijuKaiser
I've got massive respect for a game like this. Nerds love this stuff. The vast story, good dialogue and great characters are good enough for most. Same reason I played Witcher 3 for twice.
Though the gameplay in this game is really not my cup of tea either
@Mel44alpha ah dungeon master
Those were the days
My personal favorite was the Ultima series. Especially 6 & 7
Beats the heck out of COD 25 (or whatever version they are on), I have no idea why a bunch of old politicians were fighting over that. If it's your cup of tea, fine, but I'm glad to see a RPG like this doing so well. Gives me hope for the future of gaming.
