The critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3 – seriously, have you seen those reviews! – will release later this year in Japan, courtesy of publisher Spike Chunsoft. The firm has snagged the rights to the ridiculously popular PS5 version, and domestic retailers have already started making product pages for digital and physical releases. It should be noted, in the west, the game is only available from the PS Store right now.
Obviously, this is big news for the PlayStation version of the game, as it’s another significant audience Larian Studios will be able to tap into. While there’s currently no release date attached to the Japanese edition, the developer announced pre-load times for Western markets overnight, and you can find out more through here. It’s also worth repeating, as we alluded to at the top of this article, this is currently one of the highest rated games of all time.

So this just begs the question as to why no physical release in the West?
Cool, I'm waiting for a physical version, so it's good to know they'll at least be an Asian version. They usually work internationally, here's hoping.
Knowing Lariat I'm expecting them to wait to be satisfied and the game fully patched before a western physical release. Maybe even limited run.
Be interesting to see if japan taps into this, westerners love jrpgs but not sure the love is reciprocated?
@Old-Red With its impending success I think a physical & likely a collectors edition is a good bet at some point.
I'm waiting for a physical version too, very frustrating this isn't available at launch, as I would've preordered and picked up day 1!
It's interesting that Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest can trace their origin back to Dungeons & Dragons but the western table RPG was always niche. I think "word of mouth" is universal and there's a lot of Japanese players that want to experience this phenomenon but it won't be as massive as Dragon Quest cause graphic design in BG3 is way too western. D&D core books had manga art design in Japan
Wasn't it bandai who handle divinity original sin 2 physical release in the west? Why don't they talk with them again?
There is a Collector's Edition already, @Sequel. I have both a PlayStation and a PC Collector's Edition on order/pre-order. Unfortunately both come with a digital version of the game. Indeed, I already had BG3 from Early Access on the PC, so I've ended up with a second PC code as a consequence of buying the Collector's Edition.
The game itself is absolutely fantastic, and I'm absolutely chuffed to see Larian getting the love that they are. It is very much deserved...
The game has potential to move hardware as well. Sony will have a great september.
@sanderson72 extra costs, while digital is big in Japan the tradition of physical is still relevant, even xbox was able to move thousands of consoles for a couple of weeks thanks to the fact the console came with physical Diablo 4, Diablo 4 in Japan was only digital on xbox outside the bundle, there is no guarantee of that in the west
People really not buying and missing out on the game because no physical? Weird.
@Gamer_Guy I'm patient. I can wait easily.
@Shadcai Yes, I think you're right. Think they did the original too, didn't they?
Seems odd not to have continued that business arrangement unless they're having issues cramming it all onto a 100GB blu-ray disc? But if that's the case, what are Spike Chunsoft doing?
Are we going to see the PS5's first multi-disc release?
@sanderson72 FF7 Rebirth is already going to be 2 discs
@Gamer_Guy Of course... I'm waiting for physical too. I would explain you why, but don't know you get it.
The absolutely obscene price that the physical PS4 final fantasy pixel remaster is going for shows that physical is far from being unwanted yet.
Edit : although in that case, it does appear that square only put out a handful of copies.
Man, can't believe this is going to be a Spike Chunsoft release. So hyped!
@Gamer_Guy Not weird at all. What's weird is people spending an insane $70 on a digital game.
