The DualSense Edge, PlayStation's answer to the Xbox Elite controller and Nintendo's Pro, is the best-selling accessory in the US for the month of June. In fact, the top four spots have all been claimed by different DualSense configurations, according to noted industry analyst and entertainment software expert Mat Piscatella of the NPD Group.
This, admittedly, comes as something of a surprise. According to our own polling, the PlayStation faithful didn't seem especially enthused by the premium piece of tech, with common complaints cited as being the device's relatively limited battery life and hefty price tag. In fact, out of 1,633 core gamers invested enough to vote on an enthusiast PlayStation site like Push Square, an overwhelming 64% purported to have no interest in the DualSense Edge controller whatsoever.

It's probably worth noting this is only for June 2023 and is based on dollar sales, meaning you'd need to sell four-ish regular DualSense controllers to make up the same amount as a single Edge, but the point stands; despite that premium price point and limited battery life, Push Square-polling be damned, people are clearly out there buying the thing!
We find it exciting that the device is selling so well, as it proves there is a demand for more premium accessories. Plus, it could potentially push us toward a future in which we get something approaching parity with Xbox's unbelievably epic Design Lab initiative, but for DualSense. We can dream, right?

People here told me this was gonna fail.
The dualsense edge is a fantastic controller. Now please make a black one so that I don’t have to wear gloves to stop it from getting dirty.
I bought one. I rarely use it much. But it’s well made. Wish they would make some different caps for it tho. Battery life is trash. I do like that it has rounded edge vs the squared off on the base controller, feels better in hand.
I guess Otterbox didnt share their Iphone case sales.
Well, I'm using everyday since day 1... about battery life, they come with a long charging cable, so, if you are smart enough you can keep it connected and actually the controller response is faster when it is wired... And the back buttons, are the fastest you can find, of course, if you do use and own one...
Waiting for the midnight version
@4kgk2 As the article notes, it takes roughly 4 regular dualsense sales to equal one dualsense edge sale. At $200 a pop it would be a colossal failure if it wasn't the best selling accessory but, it's more important to note, "best selling in dollar sales" is NOT the same as best selling (i.e. number of units sold).
Most expensive accessory is the best selling one in dollar value?
Yeah. I'm truly shocked
You need to sell more then 3 DualSense base controllers to match one DualSense Edge controller in dollar value. It has something to do with that
@Godot25 my best guess is exactly four-ish regular DualSense controllers to make up one Edge, regardless of conversion rates or the currency with which they’re bought
I imagine upcoming EVO had a thing or two to do with that
@Khayl I wasn't sure about price in other regions so I went with conservative "more then 3" rather then "4"
Maybe MS players are buying their own controllers digitally. All of my friends haven't bought a physical controller in ages.
@GeneJacket ask yourself: Do you think Sony, as a business, prefers dollars made or units sold?
It’s a premium product it’s always expected to sell less than the standard version, it’s the exact opposite of a ‘colossal failure’.
It's a really unnecessary controller and follows Sony's trend of overpricing things this gen. A friend of mine bought one and has rarely used it.
I also struggle with their decision to not include back buttons on the standard DualSense after releasing the back button attachment for PS4.
It clearly shows the huge disconnect between the people who engage on push square, and the target audience..
Nobody should suprised that views expressed here, where there is often a sense of entitlement and people regularly seem to be looking for reasons to moan, is completely at odds with general games players who just want to enjoy themselves.
83% of votes on polls are from trolls it's a known fact. You only have to look at election results to see that....
My opinion is that Sony should implement a hall effect sensor in their controllers instead of an analog stick, because with a hall effect sensor the controller will never drift. The same goes for Microsoft and Nintendo. Back in the 90s, Sega used the hall effect sensor in its controllers.
@4kgk2
For casual gamers, DualSense Edge is completely unnecessary
@Dark_Knight what counts as a "casual gamer", though? Are people who only play Fifa, CoD or Fortnite casual gamers?
@themightyant Dollars made or units sold. I was making this exact point recently when trying to explain to someone why Project Q won't be a failure.
It doesn't need to be a roaring success. They have PS5 for that. These are just the accessories and if they make any profit at all, or if the people who pick these up also go on to drop a tonne of money on software, then the job is done.
I love the controller apart from the white rubber grips. Not only do they not give me any benefits haptics-wise, the potential discoloration is giving me anxiety, lol. I've seen numerous reports of it turning yellowish which hasn't happened to me yet, it's still shiny white. However, there is a tiny blue spec on it that simply won't come off. This wouldn't be an issue at all if it were plastic like the rest. I just hope I'll be able to keep it in a clean state as long as possible.
@naruball
I was referring to those who play video games just for fun.
Had one for a few months and really liked the build nice and solid nice bit of weight but the battery life was woeful,sadly i noticed it intermittently not charging one day,i declined a repair and got my money back,as someone who is far from being a pro gamer (i ain't winning no tournaments) i kinda miss it at times especially for fps shooters with the trigger stops,it took some getting used to but i was also getting used to the back buttons (preferred the domed variant many more accidental presses with paddles) useful for jumping among other things without having to take my thumb off R3 especially useful in games like Returnal,i may purchase one again some day maybe i just wish the battery life was an hour or two longer.
My Nephew got one for his Birthday and it’s a very nice controller but I couldn’t justify the price for myself. I’d be happy with a standard controller in Classic Grey.
That's exactly what I do ,I've got 2 dualsenses ,when I'm using 1 I'm charging the other at the same time ,so never get lazy lol,anyway even when playing longer sessions ,I'll always make cups tea,coffee ,water ,etc etc ,the dualsenses battery isn't great but I do love the dualsenses haptics and triggers ,which unfortunately means not a great battery life ,I haven't got the pro controller so I can't comment on how gd it is or not ,pleased to hear it selling well though
Also I'll give huge credit to Sony and playstation brand for launching extra accessories ,dualsense Pro,psvr2 among other things ,I'd much rather have all these extra accessories than not , ,and people who bought a pro controller I think should be getting a gd battery life for that money better than dualsense battery
I cant believe people paid that much for a controller.
I guess the economy isn't doing too bad in the US then if y'all can afford this overpriced junk
This is skewed because of the price of it, but still, for it to be any sort of a success is kind of bonkers. I'm sure the actual controller itself is actually good, but given the price and atrocious battery life, I can't see why that many people outside of competitive online gamers would buy the thing. Granted there are plenty of them, so I guess it was automatically going to sell ok and is why it sold even decent even though it's severely overpriced.
@Chaosbros Just as 76% of statistical quotes are made up. 🤣
I have an 3 Elite controllers for my series X. And I love them! 2 normal ones and the halo limited edition. I can’t go back to regular controllers. However. As I’m also a PS user, I refuse to buy the edge when it has less features and half the back paddle buttons than the elite and it’s DOUBLE the price. Until that thing comes down in price I will stick to Dualsense on PS and Elite on Xbox
The fact that, at this price, it doesn’t have 4 back buttons/paddles is absurd. I’ll continue to buy the kits found on Amazon
@Chaotic_Goat
You can always get a Scuf Reflex. Don't moan about the price though.
This has been Sonys Strategy this whole gen. Milk the hardcore fans who will buy anything with the their logo on it. I guarantee there’s heavy overlap between people who bought this, paid $70 for last of us remake and will buy a PS5 Pro day 1.
Best controller on the market, not surprising!
There's multiple battery life tests on YouTube where it lasts between 6 to 8 hours in a single session which should be more than enough time for most people.
@Pompey71
Trust me most of us Americans can’t afford to buy stuff like this Willy Nilly.
As a people we are in an eye watering amount of private debt. Most Americans have a shocking debt to income ratio that no one else in the world has.
Because we are Americans and we like shiny things, even if we can’t really afford it.
Soon, the Spider-Man DualSense will be!
@KaijuKaiser
It's amazing what happens when you elect someone competent instead of a celebrity.
Removed - unconstructive
@Pompey71 You own one you ever tried or used one? I don't have one but if you say it's junk back it up or are you just salty you don't have one. 😜
@KaijuKaiser If I play a long im wired 9 out 10 times those two to three meter cables are quite cheap. Being able to find a job is fantastic but making a real living wage without needing to have three jobs is just as important.
If they made the coming Spiderman dualsense as a Pro controller too, I could have considered buying one. But the white is plain ugly imho. And that price... Too much to be honest. So I'm glad they don't tempt me with a Spiderman themed come to think about it 😋🤣🤣
@KaijuKaiser In America I read that a lot of people need several jobs make enough money to able to get around that's what meant.
I bought it day one. I was waiting for something like the Edge for a long time and quite honestly I’m 100% satisfied with it. The sort battery life sucks but it’s not a problem for me. I don’t have enough free time for that to be an issue and I always charge my controllers every time I’m not playing anyway.
I accept it’s not a product for everyone and that some can even see it as unnecessary. That’s fair. Still, I’m happy I got one.
I love PS4 and the DS4 a lot, my favorite gen by far, but the current gen is really shaping up to beat them. Time will tell.
Cheers and happy gaming!
@Texan_Survivor
Part of that is one controller has a ton of fancy features and the other doesn't.
I have a DualSense Edge and I like it. It's my preferred controller now, for sure, but I still wouldn't recommend buying one! The difference between the Edge and the default controller is very small. The only real difference is the extra buttons on the back.
Give it 8 months before Drift sets in.
@KaijuKaiser Not to mention that you can plug the long cable and keep playing... no worries mate, most of the complainers do not own a Dual Sense Edge, because they do not mention all the profiles you can create, the super fast back buttons, stick precise customisation and else, just liars... and at the end of the day, this controller worth any penny and if you can afford it, you can get it...
I have the Edge, and I generally like the Edge, still waiting for low tension stick modules to be available, that's something that should have been an option day 1 and along with the battery that holds it back heavily. But I still can't really fathom that this is leading the charge in accessories unless all other accessories are basically completely dead in sales. It's a ridiculously overpriced controller with a super niche market. I bought it because I'm really really fussy about input devices, but there's got to be more to the story, I just can't picture it being particularly popular among the masses. Worth it to me, but my device ergonomics fetish is far from normal.
@cassiel I do hope for a few extra colors though black would be great.
@cassiel
It seems like a lot of people (not just gamers) have no idea about the cost of specialist equipment.
I had a Scuf Impact for the PS4 which cost more than the Edge.
I did a bit of customising on the website for a Scuf Reflex yesterday and it came to over £350. A bog standard Reflex starts at £199. There was another PS5 pro controller introduced late last year (can't remember the make/model) which started at £250.
Funny thing is, no matter how many controllers have come since and no matter how much they cost, I have DualShock 3 controllers running their original batteries that will always outlast newer DualShock 4 and DualSense controllers.
It's that stupid light bar on the back which you can only dim not switch off, compared to the energy efficient little red LEDs on the DS3.
@Titntin This is true of all online environments, especially the "echo chamber" ones where people turn up to have their existing views validated by finding others who feel the same regardless of how niche it is. Well observed.
@Dark_Knight Leaving aside that you're stating opinion as fact which is a classic Internet rookie mistake, odds are there's plenty of collectors out there who only game casually who have bought one. It's up to the person buying to decide what's necessary and what isn't, little things called choice and free will...
@Texan_Survivor The DualSense is such a double-edged sword because on the one hand it's super ergonomic, looks modern and the HD Rumble (or whatever Sony call it because Nintendo did the same exact thing first, essentially) is incredible, but yet the build quality and durability are pretty bad, the battery life is woeful even as compared to the DS4 and same old PlayStation stupid D-pad that fighting game enthusiasts hate.
This is shocking to me.
It’s a far worse deal than the Xbox controller and has a horrible battery.
@FatalBubbles
Interestingly, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller has a much better battery than the DualseSense Edge, that is, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller has a battery that can last at least 40 hours. Sony should have removed something from the controller to extend the battery life. In my opinion, the battery is far more important than other technologies in the controller.
@Dark_Knight I don’t play our switch that much but the kids almost never charge that controller so I can believe the 40 hour life on it. I got an Xbox elite controller for Father’s Day and its life has to be at least 30 hours.
I have two regular dual sense controllers so one is always docked so not a big deal that the lifespan is like 6 hours but I agree they should have our more effort into a better battery.
I want Sony to enable use of the DS4s on all PS5 games.
There are no button inconsistencies so why not Sony? Simply to flog overpriced things like this and due to the haptic 'HD rumble' feedback that barely shows up and adds very little.
@AverageGamer Or you could just, idk, thoroughly wash your hands.
@PHXNTXM I do thoroughly wash my hands, but I can’t stop and wash my hands every minute Im playing. It mid summer in US, I live in the south, in a room facing the sun 90% of the days, and get sweaty hands while playing. Humans shed a lot of dead skin during the day that will build up on the controller. I also like to stop and pet my 2 cats who are occasionally cover in red clay soil that is found in my region.
