Mimimi Games, the team behind this month's Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew and 2020's Desperados III, has shared the unfortunate news it will be closing down. This is because the dev's "future production costs are growing faster than potential revenues of our genre. The increased financial pressure and level of risk became unsustainable," it's explained in a blog post on the studio's website. Mimimi Games will now slowly wind down production and contact other studios to try and find work for its current employees.
The post continues: "As founders and directors, we found it increasingly difficult to strike a balance between fulfilling internal expectations for the studio and being available for our young families. Meeting our goals of quality, company culture and management requires a constant level of energy that we simply can’t provide anymore." To help with this transition, all employees are being paid a bonus.
As the team winds down, it'll continue to patch and produce new content for Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew. A new update is being worked on right now and a "big content drop" is planned for later this year. All of the developer's games will continue to remain up for purchase on the PS Store.
Released less than two weeks ago, Shadow Gambit commands an impressive Metacritic rating of 85 and has been heralded as one of the best in its genre. In our PS5 review, we awarded the game an 8/10 and shared praise for its amusing cast and great combat.
Mimimi Games signs off: "We want to thank our community and fans for playing our games and engaging with us. Your joy and support were what fueled our passion! We want to thank our industry peers that helped us along all stages of this company, from founding it to self-publishing for the first time. Your mentoring was pivotal for our success!"

Well that's sucks their 3 games are amazing!
Such a shame. They should have put Shadow Gambit on a service and maybe try that avenue of monetization..
I looked at the reviews 2 weeks ago and wishlisted it for purchase later on, once it's 20-30% discounted. Didn't even dream they would close
Sad news. They made some great games. Their latest, Shadow Gambit, may end up being one of favorites in the strategy genre.
They should have switched up the genre since strategy games was not turning a profit.
Sad news. Supported them by buying Shadow Gambit day 1, great game!

Damn, that’s a big loss. I’m playing Shadow gambit right now, sooooo good.
Wow this is the worst news to wake up to. I love their games and the newest is their best yet. I hope the developers land on their feet
@Elf Tbh I can't see this being Microsofts fault, but I do agree that these subscription services will probably ruin indie developers in the long run, if we ever get to a point where everything relies on a subscription service then I'm sure decent indies will be a rare occurance, whilst AAA and Live service games will be the main focus.
Such a shame, they’ve been delivering great strategy games but the industry’s in a weird place right now.
Thats mess up mimimi games are a amazing developer.i hope they get back on theyre feet.word up son
Always sad news when a talented studio needs to close its doors. Obviously this isn’t down to just one game but It’s a shame about the timing of Shadow Gambit. If it released during a less busy period when we don’t have some of the biggest games of the year (maybe decade) around the corner it would probably have sold way better. I was so close to buying it but then figured i still need to finish FF16 and will be playing nothing but Baldurs Gate and Starfield when they come out.
That's a damn shame, hope they land on their feet.
Loved all 3 of their games and their commitment to reviving a dead genre. Its a real shame they couldn't find a larger audience. They've struggled financially to break even with each release and can't blame them for prioritising their families after three goes.
@UltimateOtaku91 i think the biggest problem with services right now and in the future is a lot of people are getting used to "not pay" for stuff and not all indie games can be as big as silksong there is going to be a lot of smaller games that in a future will have to choose between putting their game on a service for a fraction of the money they could have make in a healthy environment where people actually are happy paying for the things they play or just not getting any money at all because people will be too bussy with "free stuff".
I feel like the problem is that games are too big. Desperadoes 3 could have been 10 hours shorter and I still would have loved it just as much. And if I wanted to more, I could have replayed and tried different routes through levels are switched up how I approached scenarios with different characters.
@Ken_Kaniff That's easier said than done though, isn't it? I mean going from a real time tactics game, a genre they excel at, to something like a FPS or RPG (like we don't have many of them already) would certainly be a great challenge.
That's really depressing to hear. "Shadow Tactics" is an amazing game, with a level of polish, that puts some AAA-games to shame. It brought my faith back in German game development. I bought "Desperados III" only on sale and haven't bought "Shadow Gambit", yet. And now I do feel bad about that. I really like these games and Mimimi's commitment to the genre. Maybe it would have been a better choice to go for different settings. Outside of a few super hyped mega games like "Red Dead Redemption" or "Assassin's Creed" western and pirate stories aren't the biggest sellers. I wonder, what could have been, had they been given the opportunity to make a new "Commandos".
Anyway, this is sad news.
This sucks. Shadow Tactics, Desperados 3 and Shadow Gambit are among my favourite, most replayed games of all time. Whoever is currently working on the new Commandos game should snatch up these talented creators immediately.
@mikeawmids Agreed. Also, it's Kalypso that are working on a new Commandos game.
So tragic. Their games were top notch and helped keep the RTT genre alive. Imagine if these guys did a Commandos reboot before closing. Damn that would've been perfect!
That’s always a shame to hear. All the best to those involved.
@Cikajovazmaj No real gamer would ever suggest the GAAS model and monetization. The simple truth is, their games just aren't that great. I played the 2 hour trial for this game and it was boring at best. They're talented though, everyone will get picked up by another studio, they always do.

I‘m not often emotionally affected by news like this. But this makes me sad. So many developers of mediocre copy-cats live on, while mimimi games really got quality, an own identity and soul.
Edit: All 3 main games reached a Metacritics score of 85. There are not many studios out there with such a track record!
Sad to hear this. Even though i'm not a fan of these kind of games its still something i dont like to hear of as it affects the fans of these games too.@RobynAlecksys real gamers respect other gamers and their rights to enjoy all types of games no matter what they think of a particular business model.
Too bad, I loved Shadow Tactics and quite liked Desperados 3
A real shame that a top level developer in the genre is closing down. It's not like there aren't other strategy games, but it's also not a genre that is flooded with them like third person action adventure games.
@RobynAlecksys No real gamer, huh? You can take that fallacious argument back to Reddit if you don't mind.
Always a shame when this happens, especially after releasing whats quite a good game.
I guess I'm part of the problem because I've never heard of this studio or any of these games 😅
