Sony is primed and ready to deliver a new State of Play livestream in September, if new rumours are to be believed. Jeff Grubb of Giant Bomb took to Twitter overnight to share he's heard "a State of Play is coming", and given Sony's recent track record of hosting events like the PlayStation Showcase in September, it seems like we're only a few weeks away from the company's next info dump.
The reliable journalist then adds yesterday's controversial PS Plus price increase feels like a "lead-in" for the State of Play, which may suggest we'll hear why Sony feels it needs to raise the cost by so much. That's just speculation, though.
What could Sony spotlight during a State of Play livestream next month? Marvel's Spider-Man 2 would obviously receive a lot of attention, and from a first-party perspective, Helldivers 2 is still slated to release this year. There's also Rise of the Ronin, which is rumoured to be launching in early 2024. Both PS5 titles could get firm release dates during such an event.
Of course, expectations should be kept in check given the rumour is this livestream is a State of Play rather than a full PlayStation Showcase, but Sony has been doing a better job with its lesser format as of late. During last year's State of Play in September, the aforementioned Rise of the Ronin was announced alongside Tekken 8 and Like a Dragon: Ishin!. There was also a story trailer for God of War Ragnarok.

Of course Jeff “there is going to be a showcase/event at some point” Grubb has said this.
Tired of this guy tbh. Rarely breaks any substantial news despite having tons of sources.
I was expecting a State of Play in September anyways because of Spider-Man 2 alone. This gonna be juggernaut, no doubt.
If this State of Play gonna feature any other first party project is unlikely. Why would Sony take off the spotlight that is important for Spider-Man 2. Aside of Helldivers 2, of course. Which, hopefully, does not come out October or November. A December release would be pleasant though.
Not fully related, but probably most of those live service games (would bet that it will start with Helldivers 2) will arrive on PS Plus and Sony will justify the price increase to them.
Most people were guessing that these games would be F2P, but it seems to be more profitable for Sony to simply raise the price of Plus, add these games there and hope everyone spends with microtransactions - While the game will paid on PC but won't require any kind of subscription.
It'll probably disappoint just like the Showcase. I've gotten to the point where my faith in Sony this gen is at an all time low.
@ED_209 @ED_209 Kind of, sort of what Microsoft did with their 10 year halo infinite plan.
So how bad is this one going to be
Given how much they already showed of Spider-Man 2 during the June showcase, having it be the main focus of another State of Play feels superfluous. Showing/announcing at least one new, first-party, single-player title wouldn't be a bad idea. They need to reassure people that there's other stuff on the horizon than a load of live service titles.
"News" ... "rumours suggest"
Alright then
Hopefully this will "showcase" some new and exciting additions to the plus service to remove the sour taste in so many ps owners mouths and go some way to justify the harsh price hike. Sadly reality will be more along the lines of sony saying the increase is necessary in order to " continue the high quality service" blah blah blah.
If it's a State of Play in September I have my fingers crossed they will provide an update on Stellar Blade.
@ED_209 See, I can get that idea, but my thought is Sony wants to maintain the PS Plus sub levels that CoD brings in, because let's be honest that's basically it for them in terms of paid multiplayer games.
So they're honestly more likely to have their live service games be paid retail releases that you then need to subscribe to PS+ for, with in game purchases. Just like Call of Duty.
This will just be Spider-man 2 😔.
If they announce nothing but live service garbage after the terrible month of plus and the price hike I think I'm literally going to stomp around my house shouting angrily.
I think it's definitely believable that there's a State of Play as:
But I don't think the event would give a reason for the PS+ price hikes, let alone a justifiable reason.
I don't think it's a case of "I know there is", rather than it's a case of "I HOPE there is". The price hike is absolutely shocking, and Sony NEEDS to explain themselves about it.
Obviously I was hoping for a proper showcase instead but if they at least give an update on Stellar Blade in this SOP then I'll walk away happy.
Damage control with the price hikes show us some good stuff sony you fools!
Unless that's how they reduced the price on the ps5 for so long in the u.k.
Well reduced the price of the console and make it up on the playstation plus subscription price 😂
Something something something broken clocks something something something twice a day.
@Korgon yep, it’s been too long since we’ve had an update on it.
Hopefully announces pre-order date for PSP (PlayStation Portal) 🙏🏻
@Jswift56 good idea regarding upping the sub price to offset the drop in the console price 👍🏻
After the streak of disappointing shows that culminated with the abysmal one from May this year, who gives a rat's arse anymore...
I'll wait for the good people from Push Square to post their usual "Round Up: What was announced at..." article : )
@Ken_Kaniff PlayStation has kept my buddy and I busy for years with their first party output to where we’ve never felt like we needed to own Xbox’s.
We both bought Series X’s this past year to go with our PS5s just to have more games to play and GamePass had become very tempting.
Now, we are both thinking about dropping PSonline.
I’ve actually played on my Series X more lately than my PS5. Just in the past few weeks I beat Psychonauts 2 and Quantum Break. Many of Sony’s decisions pushed us to buying Xbox’s when neither of us has had one in over a decade.
Jeff Grubb, nuff said.
But SM2 getting closer, so expect Ragnarok treatment.
Redman featuring method man whathever man.is what i feel about it.it comes.it comes.its supposed too.sony have been silent.word up son
30 minutes of useless transitions and trailers for upcoming Sony films
Release dates for Gran Turismo Blu-Ray with hilarious outtakes included.
@KaijuKaiser Except it was $3 per month (for my Extra sub), but I do see your point. It’s on par with other services like Disney+, Netflix, etc.
It is weird though that they took away the incentive to pre-pay for a full year. Usual business practice is give people a little discount if they sub for a year instead of pay month by month.
This site is probably the most Toxic PlayStation site. Even when Sony announce good news this site somehow find out how to make it into bad news lol.
@Th3solution I expect them to raise monthly prices soon. Microsoft did as much. First they announced price hikes - then a few days later they started closing loopholes and ways to find discounts. Usually a gut punch is followed by a series of jabs to the face before the grand knock-out blow.
I've got this feeling many of the unannounced live service games are being reconsidered or outright cancelled after Bungie evaluated Sony's upcoming portfolio, and that is why so many studios games are unaccounted for so far. And ultimately that's also why there's been so few SoP's.
Mystic rumours of PS2 classics and Juff Grubb SoP rumours, both of these the following day after the PS Plus price increase. Somethings potentially going on. I just hope it's good news at the end of it all so it can justify the price increase somehow
I just want more JRPG games.
@Perturbator I'd guess the overwhelming negative reaction to the Suicide Squad focused State of Play (mostly because of Suicide Squad being your typical live service game) will have also been a factor as Rocksteady's path is similar.
Rocksteady went from the extremely well received single player Batman Arkham trilogy to a live service game. A lot of Sony's studios made extremely well received single player games.
@4kgk2 Yep, couldn't agree more. Under a few usernames I have been here for years ... yet it's definitely gotten worse.
One username I used I actually declared my real job and helped people on here during the launch of PS5 and broke NDA agreements to do it, funny how people have a differing attitude when you're not bending over backwards to help them.
I mean I just had a guy pull me up with anger, simply because I understand inflation exists, and that I am not currently struggling to pay for Playstation products.
Apparently, we need to be more "vocal" and "loud" about how angry we are, otherwise, we are shills and so forth.
I genuinely don't know why people wish to be so angry, maybe it's the state of the world and thus it bleeds into their hobbies, but either way, I come here to get some fun news and updates on a hobby I love. I want to chat with fellow enthusiasts, instead it's just like being on Daily Mail comments section most of the time.
Anyway, like your comments buddy, always have liked how you go against the grain, keep it up.
And to keep it on topic; looking forward to any announcements, though I have a backlog like many.
I would like to hear more about TLOU Factions, simply because I quite literally have heard nothing for quite some time.
Other than that, maybe an update on future plans for some studios or what they're working on etc.
With Spider-Man 2 not far off, wouldn’t be surprised if it was just that
@Grumblevolcano That also sounds plausible. Suicide Squads reception reminded me of Anthems reception (perhaps even worse) so I'm sure Sony wants to avoid making that mistake.
GTA:6 anyone? Lmao jk.. that would make sense
@Jacko11 He doesn’t have sources. They’re all made up. All his “sources” are just him.
I've heard there will be a sale on PS Store next month 👀
in fact, I can tell you the exact date...
14/9/23
I won't disclose my sources, incase Jeff steals them 😅
I am hoping they give us a preview of their first party games they have in production. Maybe a big day one release on one of the PlayStation Plus tiers like MW3 and the release of proper emulation for the classic games on premium. Hopes aside let's be realistic, most likely it'll be a Spiderman 2 showcase.
@Luigia Available November 15, you can pre-order now.
@Chaosbros thanks and just taken the plunge 🙏🏻👍🏻
Another disappointment incoming then
"Keep your expectations in check because it is a state of play" are you serious?
We got a showcase and it was worse than all the state of plays before it, my expectations are high hahaha.
But reality its September, its just going to highlight the end of year games. Spiderman 2 and he'll divers.
I'm expecting a big one before the end of the year after spiderman 2 to show us whats in the works for 2024.
Not expecting much.
There are also rumours about a new FFVII rebirth trailer with a potential release date. And isn't there a state of play every year in september?
So which movie trailer we’re getting now? Lmao
Jokes aside, 4/5 recent State of Plays have sucked and after the * amazing * showcase my expectation is at literal zero other than Spider-Man 2 gameplay, which I don’t really want to see more of it since it’s so close and I’d rather wait to play it.
Jim Ryan needs to leave the company he has no idea what he is doing. charging people a riddclus price for the subscription and we crap games I want him gone
What I'd like to see is Jim Ryan gone and someone with a soul put in charge of Playstation again.
Oh, and a PS4-form factor style 5 with themes and folders, etc.
@Luigia Nice one 👍Looks great if you use remote play often.
I would be happy if they come up with Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement but doubt it if they did not at the showcase...Hope it will not be just about SM2 though, I'd like to see Silent Hill 2 remake for instance or what is Bluepoint up to
