In sad news for fans of legendary characters, Square Enix has confirmed to IGN what was likely always going to be the case: that everyone's favourite edgy gunslinger will be an AI companion in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and not fully playable, just like Red XIII in Final Fantasy VII Remake. The same goes for the chain-smoking pilot, Cid, who remains elusive, hard to define, and thus highly cool.
Of course, Red XIII will be playable this time around, along with Cait Sith (who we don't recall being very cool). Yuffie got her time to shine in the Intergrade standalone expansion and is confirmed to be playable and incorporated into the story more thoroughly than before (being an optional ally in the original). Even Sepiroth will be playable, if only briefly.
Zack Fair's also getting an expanded role in this re-imagined telling of a now-classic video game tale, which Rebirth producer Yoshinori Kitase described thusly: "We see at the end of Remake that he has appeared, which, you know, is quite a difference from the original title. And as for Rebirth, there will be a new episode with Zack that will contain even more of him than the Remake. I'm not able to say much more than this as I would like for players to play and experience this with it in their own hands."
So, while it seems like Square Enix is saving the best for last, at least Vincent and Cid will fight alongside the party, if only in an AI-controlled fashion. Who are your preferred FFVII companions? Play favourites in the comments section below.

That’s a shame, hope they’re playable next time around!
Noooooooo Vincent’s a staple of my party in literally every save. I get him as soon as I can.
That's fine by me. Mainly because I never had them in my battle party anyway, but also because with all the other characters I've got enough movesets to get through and properly learn. I expect to mostly swap between Yuffie, Tifa and Cloud, though.
I'm sure these two will get their due attention when they round out the trilogy with Final Fantasy 7: Refreshed & Rehydrated.
I did wonder what kind of Cid we would be getting in this game though. We all remember the original version. A grizzled chain smoker who treats that woman he lives with in a way that would be VERY controversial nowadays. Every time he has come back since they've basically watered him down in some way. They even made him look younger.
Why not? Since it's a remake you should be able to pick the one you want. I know ffvii been out since the 90s. But I'm no Gona spoil it for the younger generation. There's only 3 playable characters from what I remember?
That was at certain parts of game. For me I'm happy enough to play through as cloud. Il be replaying the 1st part a week before release keep both releases close together in my memory. Looking forward to this ☺️
I reckon Vincent definitely going to be the star of this games DLC
Never used them anyway in the original, Cloud , Tifa and Yuffie TopTier team !!
Doesn't matter if the gameplay with all others characters is fun. Maybe it's DLC material, which at a segmented game like this, I'm not a big fan of, but at least the yuffie stuff was well made.
@LifeGirl to be fair he is only 32 years old 😂
They hinted at this during a previous Q&A and said the accompanying characters will play a larger role in part 3, so like Red XIII, he'll most likely be playable in the next game after his introduction.
Man I really like Vincent gonna suck waiting for the third game to play as him but ahh well
@Andy22385 tbf 32 in JRPG terms is like “ten years off retirement” - FFX Auron was like 35, but greying, grizzled and wise and kept being called ‘old man’
This is actually unbelievable that pushsquare just spoils everything about Rebirth on the main page
My man Cid better light some dynamite with the cigarette hanging off his bottom lip or this game really won't even be worth playing.
@Kidfried Exactly! Websites and Square Enix themselves spoil parts of the game casually. Square even spoiled the final area of the game!!
I get that they want to create interest but come on...
Dirge of Cerberus remake confirmed.
This was expected. They will use Cid & Vincent to help market the 3rd game or they will be part of the "Intergrade" DLC for this game.
Oh no, Cid's take-off has been aborted again.
But seriously, I don't mind this. The characters in the remake trilogy are like fighting game characters with a lot of complexity - then add in the fact it's an RPG and they all have their own customisations and so on. I like the idea of them focusing on a few characters per game, and really getting them right and letting them shine against certain bosses. Also, if this ends at the end of Disc 1, like they've implied, you'd not have much plot time with Vincent or Cid anyway (same as Red XIII in the last game).
In the original the party were all effectively the same character but with slightly different stars and their own limit breaks (which were functionally just damage multipliers for the most part) whereas here they're much more distinct and unique.
@Corc11 I think you're absolutely right. Bookmark this comment!
Booooooooooo! Waaaaaaaaaaaah!! Vinceeeeeeent!!!
Honestly I’m fine with that. I was hoping we’d maybe get a completely new party member (because, well it’s rebirth) but that’s seeming highly unlikely unless it’s Zack. Maybe like Roche, Jessie or someone completely different. But that’s close to zero now. I never played the original tho so maybe there’s more in terms of party members I don’t know about (only played Remake then Crisis Core).
Regardless, gaining a playable Cait Sith, Red XIII and Yuffie in one go is awesome. I’m sure the combat with Cid & Vincent will still feel smooth and fresh like the sections with Red XIII. So pumped for this game!!!
I was annoyed cause my team was always Cloud, Vincent and Cid. But I doubt I'll care much when I'm playing the actual game. They have to leave some fresh gameplay for part 3 I suppose
Considering the Yuffie DLC, Vincent will probably have a bigger role in part 3 then in the original.
It's fine, we can't have everything huh
@Kidfried it's been known to spoil things or drop other rancid "News" for clicks. If push square had its authors name visible beside the thumbnail I'd never click it's following content..
I’m a little disappointed. Vincent was my favorite party member. Well worth the optional extra effort to find him and have him join the party in the original FF7.
I was never a Cait Sith fan. I did use Red XIII, but my favorite party members were Vincent and Tifa.
I imagined this based on the last trailer - but also that the two new playable characters are Cait and Red
Makes sense to me. As long as I can still play as babygirl Tifa, I dont care. Haha
As others have said before, can we keep the spoilers down a little please. This is my go to PlayStation news site and I'm a little butthurt over the FFVII Rebirth news that has been shared on this site lately. I didn't watch any of the trailers and don't read the article if I feel like it might spoil stuff but just glancing over article headlines shouldn't contain spoilers.
Damn. Cid and Vincent are my team. Ah well. Agree with what's been said about Cid. It sucks, but there's no way they'll keep him true to his character in the original lol
I'm surprised for Cid, but Vincent i can understand. Wasn't even expecting him to be in the game.
What's the point of having them hang around if they're not going to be playable? I'm already having flashbacks to the useless hangers-on in FF16, who did nothing and rarely spoke.
Don’t see the difference. Every character is literally the same combat-wise.
It only make sense that they would trickle out playable characters over the course of the trilogy so that each game feels fresh.
Makes sense that they’d save some characters for part 3, especially since we’re still getting two and a half new characters in this one.
Coincidentally though, these two being saved for part 3 means I’ll probably end up with the same endgame party I had in the original, at least for a bit.
And while I don’t actually care for Cid that much in the original (not sure where the article is getting “hard to define” from, it’s pretty easy to figure him out) going by how they’ve been handling the original’s characters so far, I wouldn’t be too worried about how he’s treated here (in fact, if he is as good as the others, he’ll probably be a lot better)
As for my preferred party members from the original, personally the only one I actually liked was Aerith, with Cait Sith, Vincent, and Red XIII being decent.
are we getting the god saucer and ultimate weapons?
