Well, that just about seals it: Mortal Kombat 1 looks absolutely incredible. This launch trailer has a bit of everything: slick cinematics, gorgeous gameplay, and even a couple of glimpses of the new Super Smash Bros-esque Invasion mode – this is going to be one for the ages, we reckon. We also get some first footage of pre-order bonus character Shang Tsung and roster padder Reiko.
The game’s technically not out until 19th September, so still a week away, but the more expensive Premium Edition will open its Krypt to players later this week, on 14th September. Are you already sold on the latest in the long-running franchise – or will you be waiting for reviews? Rip our skeleton out through our skin in the comments section below.

@Powerplay94 Yeah MK has always had stiff, and somewhat lifeless animation. It's still a blast to play though, just maybe stay away from online, it'll just cause you untold amounts of stress. At least that's what I do!
Not really into fighting games, but I like mk's kharacters, story, and just the kraziness of it.
not going to lie, that was a dope trailer for sure.
aside from all the hype and fervor to try and help sell it as something new and amazing alongside a massive visual upgrade; It is just another fighting game, and it takes 5 minutes of diligence to see it actually looks very similar to the last 3 iterations that have come out in the franchise.
It will sell just like sports games and call of duty games sell, as there is a fanbase there that gobble up every iteration in the genre they love regardless of whether its ultimately the same thing over and over again or not.
I only play fighting games with a friend who basically only plays western games. He really likes Mortal Kombat and so I play it with him, but I don't care much for fighting games in general. Occasionally, I check them out because the art and animation is so cool.
Mortal Kombat has come a long way with legitimately good story modes, cool cinematics, and somewhat branching choices. While I don't care for fighting games that much overall, it's hard to argue with Mortal Kombat's top tier quality.
Got the early access version and I'm excited to play it. Been a fan of MK since MK2 on my aunt's computer back in the day.
After Tekken it's my favourite fighting franchise. The fatalities are always awesome
Slightly off topic perhaps, but I can’t get excited for any fighting game.
For me, the problem with fighting games has always been the need for guesswork when defending. Sure, educated guesses based on what would be best for your opponent to do, chains in a combo, knowledge of your opponent (back in the days of local multiplayer being the standard), but guesswork still the same. By the time an opponent had started the move it is usually already too late to counter.
I’d love a proper VR fighting game were you could actually read your opponents body language, eyes, subtle body movements and such…but that likely won’t be possible for another 50 years and I won’t be around then (and if I am I’d be far too feeble).
The animation of the actual fights look like stick figure puppets with missing frames. The backgrounds are all but static. They can add whatever gimmick they took from Smash bros or SF - the game is wack - just about the blood and movies.
Dang there is a lot of toxicity in here regarding MK. I’m glad I’m usually around people that are excited for it.
MK is the number one selling fighting game for a reason, it definitely has its fans. I’ve already bought it.
@OmegaStriver It will not outsell Smash Bros. Ultimate. It will not come even close. the number 1 fighting game is Smash Brothers.
Smash bros also sells at full price for years and years and years. MK11 I can get for $8 pretty much whenever I want.
~~~toxic~~~
@Cashews You can google it, MK is the number one fighting game franchise.
Scroll frown to franchise.
I already bought it, but man I’m looking forward to review reading and seeing who wins in the ultimate fight: Mortal Kombat 1 vs Street Fighter 6.
Reikko is such an odd pick on the roster, by the way. Nice play on the rumors from long ago that Reikko was Shao Khan maybe? I really like how they’re giving some odd choice characters a chance to rebirth themselves in an alternate timeline. It’s actually a master stroke for rebooting the series again, and keeping it fresh but not.
Well, I'd rather have this than SF6, but that isn't saying much.
Honestly, kind of over most fighting games these days. They've got too much in the way of live services and the multitude of fighter/season passes has become a real turnoff.
Always loved MK, but i am done with fighting games. They require too much practice and memorization and i just don't have the time.
I look forward to seeing the story on youtube though.
I hoped we could've seen something like the MK deception conquest mode. That would've had me playing.
People acting like you gotta dedicate your life to this game. There’s a story mode, towers, and a board game mode, you don’t even have to face another real human to get your money’s worth. I’m a parent without much gaming time and this is day one. Play it the way you want. Nobody is expecting you to compete in EVO.
Downloading it right now and its pretty huge at 115GB, Friday can't come soon enough.
@Cashews Ultimate has sold the most overall for a single game but franchise wise MK is king.
@KundaliniRising333 Shocker fighting games play like fighting games.
I've gotten use to everyone's look from MK11, so seeing the art style for this is a bit jarring. Not a million miles of difference but still a difference. I'm not as worried about the Kameos as I was initially. I'll likely never go up against another human but looks like there will be more than enough to do as a solo player.
@KundaliniRising333 Just sounds how little you know about the genre. MK11 played NOTHING like MKX (and many hardcore gamers complained about it as they perceived as it was simplified), and from what I played from MK1 beta test, it looks like they changed the mechanics quite a bit. No way it can be compared to the yearly sports games.
