Update: Tomb Raider I-III Remastered is now available to pre-order on PS Store. The new listing also reveals the collection's price, which is a very reasonable Β£24.99 / $29.99 (USD). PS Plus members can get a 10 per cent saving on that, too.
Original Story: Announced at the just-finished Nintendo Direct, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft (yes, that's the official title) is also coming to PS5 and PS4.
Developed by Aspyr, the collection comprises all three games of the original PS1 trilogy, revamped with new visuals. Additionally, the expansion packs for all three games are included, playable for the first time on console. While the new graphical style isn't what we'd call cutting edge, it's certainly an improvement on the jaggy originals. If you're nostalgic for that pointier look, however, you can swap to it on the fly.
There's no word yet on whether the controls are being modernised or if the infamous tank controls are being left untouched. We'll share more as and when we hear it. Either way, the collection arrives on Valentine's Day next year β that's 14th February, 2024.

I have a Switch but this would have been great for Vita back in the day.
No tanks, get it.. it's a pun lol, but seriously can't play games with tank controls anymore.
I might actually be up for this!
Controls definitely need an update. Then it could be great.
Pretty cool. I love collections of older games.
Will be cool to earn the platinum for these.
Feb 14th is meant to be Lara Croft's birthday. Cute little nod
No sign of Horizon Chase 2 today for PS
If the controls get a refresh, I can see myself getting the remasters. Otherwise, I'll just play the PS1 versions on my Vita.
It's good to know the old Tomb Raider games also star Lara Croft.
The game is up on Steam for preorder, 28,99β¬ with 20% launch discount (23,19β¬ total).
@themightyant Oh god yeah, but I feel that changing the tile-set movement would completely break the game
As now I'm basically an old man, I just don't think I have the patience to play through these again. As for those who never did first time round, prepare to break your controller!
Look, I get it, nobody likes tank controls. That being said, these games would not work without the controls being an obstacle in themselves. Lining up jumps is a crucial part of the games and free moving controls would completely break the game.
I remember Tomb Raider III as one of the hardest games I ever played. We used cheat codes and even so, was trully brutal!!
Actually far more interested in this than the later reboot with its terrible character βdevelopmentsβ. Originals with additional trophy challenges? Yes please!
Awwww poor widdle gamers with their poor widdle thumbs can't handle tank controls. What a tragedy!
Really excited for these, hopefully there isn't any issues despite whose making it.
Was excited until I saw itβs coming from Aspyr.
I'm genuinely excited for this. I like the original Tomb Raider games even with their clunky tank controls.
Been waiting for these to accompany the reboot trilogy in my collection. Now maybe just Tomb Raider Anniversary (assuming these don't incorporate Anniversary's retoolings) and I'll be good.
The classic Lara model looks great updated
Dont forget Tomb Raider Anniversary already covered TR1, 15+ years ago and tbh its graphics looked better than in this trailer. But they have 6 months to sort.
Great games though, hope they do modernise the controls and get them to the quality of TR-A, perhaps giving them a quick before and after toggle like with the graphics.
If they could at least get it to control somewhat close to like how Tomb Raider Legend played then I'll be all over this! If it's still tank controls I'd still be interested but I'd probably wait for a sale.
@lindos these are 20 year old games and your concern is the graphics π
@supergurr This is a remaster so that is not an excuse. The Crash Bandicoot Collection for PS4 looks great.
@colonelkilgore Me too, TR1 had great atmosphere and the music is still haunting to this day.
For remasters they look pretty bad to me, but more power to people who don't mind the graphics.
I did initially get GTA Remastered PTSD flashbacks when seeing those wipe transitions, but fingers crossed this won't be an absolute poopshow.
And yeah, the tank controls are an inherent part of the level design, particularly in the first game β when they first dipped their toes into analogue control, we got Angel of Darkness...
Contrary to some commenters, I hope they do NOT change the controls. These games were designed to be played with tank controls, like it or not. The level design is designed completely around them.
@naruball I thought the upgrade looked really odd with the high resolution textures paired with the blocky geometry, the reveal of the switching to original graphics feature explained it, but I think I'll stick mostly to those original graphics as a consequence. There's some charm to it I suppose, it looks a bit like the CGI renders you'd get from the era.
MGS master collection vol.1. Original Tomb Raider trilogy remastered collection. Meanwhile Capcom releases the same Street Fighter 2 every few years for the past 30+ years while completely ignoring their original Resident Evil 90s trilogy. Specifically mean original remastered collection not Capcoms remakes, two completely different things
@Beerheadgamer82 Yeah, a Resi 1-3 collection would be itch-inducingly tasty
@nessisonett I love tank controls and wouldn't want to play these without them
@Andee yup it certainly would. Those RE tank controls are engraved into my brain from teenage years, so easy for me to pick up and play it. Imagine some brand new speedrun trophies too for all 3
@DestructionAllstars I played the originals when they first came out and there's no way in hell you can make me play these games again with those controls, they were awful back then and they are even more awful now.
Could be all over this. Knocked one out many a time over Laraβs triangular assets
Day one for me, I hope the game will have 4K & dolby atmos support. It's a nice coincidence that I've been playing OpenLara, a remake of tomb raider 1 that you can play on website, and wish I can get a proper console remastered version of psone tomb raider games
http://xproger.info/projects/OpenLara/
"Announced at the just-finished Nintendo Direct, Tomb Raider I-III Remastered Starring Lara Croft (yes, that's the official title) is also coming to PS5 and PS4."
I actually love the title, they did that Starring Lara Croft thing in the original games.
@Americansamurai1 I'd be incredibly surprised if they didn't have a modern analogue option with the game. (Like the REmake and RE Zero remasters). I'd also be incredibly surprised if a sub set of gamers with don't spend a depressing amount of time moaning about how the option 'ruins the game' and is a 'slap in the face' to hardcore/oldschool/whatever gamers etc.
@nessisonett yeah, I feel like the game would be hilariously easy without the tank controls. Maybe I'm wrong though.
Edit : not that it matters if it is I guess.
@Fyz306903 yeah I actually agree that there be people complaining about modern. Controls, I had someone attack me on here when I asked if the new mgs collection was going to have updated controls lol they told me just to get used to the old controls.
I remember getting stuck at that fight with the 6 arm sword dude in the photos. I beat the two of them but couldn't figure out how to get out of the room! Maybe adult me will be able to beat it!
I donΒ΄t think they will change the controls:
"While the new graphical style isn't what we'd call cutting edge, it's certainly an improvement on the jaggy originals. If you're nostalgic for that pointier look, however, you can swap to it on the fly."
If we can swap the graphics on the fly, IΒ΄m almost certain the controls will be the same.
And IΒ΄m thankfull for that.
It's already "remastered" with emu birds and higher X 3 resolution I'm not sure what this has to offer when they could have included the tomb raider anniversary from the PS2 on here for a base at least, not much effort put into this trilogy it seems π€¨
I am so excited by this! TR1-3 (and Last Revelation and even Chronicle...) are definitely in my list of greats - how 1 or 2 didn't even make the PushSquare 128 best is utterly staggering....
There is a difference between a remaster and a remake. You can't compare this Tomb Raider trilogy remaster to the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro remakes. Those were rebuilt from the ground up.
If it was a remake I'd buy this. This looks more like a dressed up Minecraft.
The 4th game is the best do it is a shame it is mot included. As long as the controls are also improved this would be a day 1 purchase for me.
It's gonna feel great to do backflips as Lara that are over 10fps.
Lol π looks like I'm buying for a Fourth time I've the discs for me PS1 and have this on gog and steam. Yes all for this thank you!
Love it, I'm probably one of the few that hope the tank controls remain.
I don't care what they do as long as I'm still able to lure Lara's butler into his icy sarcophagus
Really, more of these remasters that are just lazy ports with minimal improvements to anything? It's like all major publishers are just putting the original games which are running inside an emulator with 3x-5x or whatever interpolated scaling inside an executable wrapper for whatever platform they're ported to. Theyre barely even ports let alone remasters.
Rockstar got away with this for Red Dead Redemption, Konami are doing it for Metal Gear Solid, it's becoming increasingly common and it's sad to see people wasting their money on these shovelware when they could emulate the original games with upscaling for free and have it look and play just about the same.
@JB_Whiting Yes someone else pointed this out on another forum and on reflection I think you are right. The movement and lining up the jumps was such an important part of the game. Yet it was also frustrating then, and borderline annoyingly unplayable now (to me anyway).
What to do? Release "as was" for a tiny minority of gamers who can still stomach tank controls and having to line up every jump like a science experiment, or rejig the game to make this process more user friendly? Ideally both in my eyes. Neither is wrong.
Better dust off the Vita and get some practice in on the PS1 original and Anniversary.
Day one buy, for sure.
@Gamer83 If it's decent, then absolutely β we've definitely been shafted royally for a lot of remasters of late, so I'm going to proceed with all the caution of Lara carrying a nugget to the statue of Midas.
Updated with info about pre-orders / price.
I will wait for the physical copy probably from Limited Run.
The price is right, so Iβll probably grab this.
The "Starring Lara Croft" makes me laugh
Reasonably priced. I might get this bundle. It's been a while since I've played these games on my Pentium II and Voodoo 2 PC
Will there be a physical version ?
Been waiting for this, can't wait and metal gear just round the corner!!
Why no from the ground up reimagining like old resi games.
Looks good but I would've liked to see The Last Revelation on there
Pre order? It's 5 months away
@Dman10
They were all available on play on the Vita via PS One Classics.
Tanks, but no tanks.
I won't be buying this. Just three more games that by all rights should 100% already be on ps plus classics collection, "remastered" or not.
Hard pass, I grew up with these games and I don't want to go back.
Hopefully, some ppl will give it a chance and enjoy the challenge.
$30 is fine, I mostly played my analogue pocket this weeks but I'm still craving for more retro gaming so I guess I'll play this one too π
How does this work? Do you have to buy them for PS4 OR PS5? or do you get both?
@Andee
I never played much of any of these games. A little bit of 1, but none of 2 or 3. I was an N64 guy and while a lot of my friends had PS1, we'd play mostly Resident Evil or Twisted Metal, Metal Gear Solid. Didn't get into Tomb Raider until Legend on Xbox 360, that's the main reason I'm interested in these remasters. Want to give them a fair play and see why they were so loved.
@Gamer83 yeah the loose trilogy of Legend/Anniversary/Underworld was where the series really started to find its groove in terms of embracing analogue controls, where the first five (and to a lesser extent, Angel of Darkness) were very specific in their control scheme. You ever played Prince of Persia or Flashback? It's kind of like a 3D version of that β kinda rigid and calculated, so not for everybody, but I always enjoyed them
@Andee
Never played those other games. But I do remember the little bit I played one TR 1. I didn't love the controls but they were playable. Kind of like classic Resident Evil. To be honest, I actually despised RE's tank controls but that's how the game was, so I adapted. I'm sure I'll adapt to the controls in these games.
@Gamer83 yeah, there's a tutorial in Lara's gymnasium which is really succinct and will lay out everything you need for the entire game
@Andee
Awesome. Hoping there's a physical release for this collection but if not, still a buy.
Right so I think this is very cool news.
@Mad001 same, have all the games on disc, Saturn version also and the forgotten dreamcast games, i also have the convenience of playing them all on my steam deck too, like wise i said before we are not sure what this remaster really offers π€·ββοΈ
All I remember about the Saturn that deep space nine crossroads in time was way better than what I got on the snes LoL
Remaster only offers the play on modern day devices and we don't have to map the buttons I hope lol
Steam deck good bit of tech that is.
I've a Nintendo switch I still can't play with a screen in me joypad lol
Psp liberty city stories took me 6 or so times to clear a mission soon as I got the disc for PS2 I cleared through the missions a lot faster lol
Only extra steam things I got is the link and a steam joypad.
Have a good one π
@LifeGirl
Crash n sane trilogy are from the ground up remasters same as the Spyro trilogy.
I donβt tomb raider 1-3 remastered is a from the ground up remaster
