Sony’s previously announced Remote Play portable for PS5, the PS Portal, will officially launch on 15th November – as dated overnight. Pre-orders are open now in select countries via the platform holder’s own direct-to-consumer storefront, PS Direct. The manufacturer says pre-orders will open at other retailers on 29th September.
For those who haven’t been keeping up, PS Portal is a device designed to stream gameplay directly from the PS5 over home Wi-Fi. It effectively enables off-screen play, so if your television is occupied by another person or you fancy continuing your downstairs gaming session in the master bedroom, you’ll be able to use its 8-inch LCD screen to pick up where you left off.
The device will retail for $199.99 in the United States and £199.99 in the UK, so it’s fairly pricey but it’s not going to break the bank. It features all the functionality from the DualSense, including adaptive triggers and haptic feedback, so there are no compromises. Battery life is said to last as long as the PS5 controller, too, but we’re still eager to test that claim for ourselves.

Delicious and just pre-ordered. I’ll get slated for doing so but being able to play PS5 anywhere in the house is great with all bells and whistles of PlayStation.
I bet over time they’ll add Bluetooth and improvements but is weird as the machine doesn’t have software to sell it, all coming from PS5 which is a first for Sony.
I just don't see the point of it.
@LifeGirl “because I live in my bedroom” perhaps?
Preordered. Time on the toilet is about to skyrocket. Hahaha.
Going to wait to see if it's cheaper two weeks later on black Friday, if not I will still pick one up before the end of the year. My partner is also a gamer and there's a lot of switch games she will want to play on tv around the time this releases (Mario Rpg, persona 5 Tactica, dragon quest monsters) so this will come in handy for me as I don't mind playing handheld whilst she has the tv.
What's the battery capacity? How come this isn't stated anywhere?! It's absolutely shocking!!
@Luigia I don't think they can "add" Bluetooth without making a new model. Which would surely annoy the hell out of anyone who shells out money for this at launch.
@IronMike told similar to Dual Sense which ain’t too bad. Go treat yourself 👍🏻
@IronMike I think I remember reading that it will be approximately the same as an original DualSense.
@__jamiie
Isn't that exactly what Nintendo did with the Switch? "Added" Bluetooth years after release, which was just turning on something that was there all along.
@Luigia Like someone else mentioned Nintendo added Bluetooth to the switch years after release in a firmware update so it is 100% possible, I also believe it may get updates to allow playstation plus streaming in the future.
@IronMike Same as dualsense battery life so around 5-6 hours which isn't bad, on par with the switch and better than the Vita/3DS, so pretty decent for an handheld, albeit streaming only so less taxing on the battery.
I must admit that it could fit to my gaming habits. BUT as long as I haven’t seen an analysis of the latency and screen quality, I don’t even think about ordering it.
The small print on the new trailer says it only needs 5 - 15 Mbps. That's far lower than I was expecting and within the range of what my WiFi extenders can do.
If it works as Sony says I'll get a lot of use out of this. I'm allowing myself to get excited for it.
@Mikey856 That's where most people's consoles are.
Oh wow. There's a lot to unpack here. Here we go.
@Luigia @pumpkin_head So, as far as we know, this device does not have Bluetooth whatsoever. There would have to be a Bluetooth chip in the device included on the motherboard, which this does not have. The Switch always had the chip and that's how they were able to "turn it on" with a firmware update.
@SoulChimera Please don't give yourself a hemorrhoid. Hahaha!
@IronMike It'll be the same-ish as a dualsense controller, so expect between 3-6 hours, but that isn't taking into account how much volume and screen brightness will impact that amount of time.
This is basically going to function like a WiiU gamepad that only uses wifi. The device doesn't have storage, so there really isn't anything to hack either. It's just a handheld screen with buttons...
@LifeGirl Could not agree more
I could go to the bathroom right now and create something more useful than this...thing.
Preordered too Just too much of a Sony fanboy to say no. I hope I use it. And maybe a little new Astro Bot to start?... I dare to dream^^
I pre-ordered it a minute after the pre-order trailer went live. I'm all in on this thing. If it doesn't satisfy me, there's a 30 days return window which I will make use of. PS Direct seems to be very accommodating with this from what I've heard. The only dealbreaker I could see right now for me personally, is bad weight distribution. Fingers crossed.
@UltimateOtaku91 I couldn’t agree more and for £199 not a bad price, as a backbone controller is over £100 and don’t enjoy playing on a Phone Screen.
@__jamiie the chip probably costs $1 and is in the device as Dualsense controllers use Bluetooth anyway
@LifeGirl yes emphasis on the word ‘MOST’. Mine and the Mrs consoles are in our Lounges 👊.. where the kids tend to be
@Leimbacher-Mario if you’re expecting native games don’t bother. It’s not that type of machine
@Mikey856 I know that it's not a standalone technical device, but since Astro Bot is something of a tech mascot, I thought maybe they could come up with something to use it creatively... But since they even didn't use him at the start of PSVR2, I don't think they see his potential and that there isn't much hope^^:(
@Luigia Genuine question then - Why isn't it already a feature? Why doesn't it use Bluetooth at launch?
Anyone know if they take payment immediately? I seem to remember that they didn’t when I got the psvr2.
@__jamiie switch didn’t for years and then added afterwards. Maybe Sony want to sell their earbuds and if they don’t sell, Bluetooth will be enabled
I've always wanted to play PS5 at home.
No rush of course, but Ill be picking this up for when we dont want to fire up the second telly and second ps5 in our front room. Sometimes its nice to both sit on the sofa together enjoying our games and this is the ideal solution that means we can both still play our ps5s while doing so.
People either live in their bedroom or dont the share their house with other games players if they cant see its uses, and my phone is for messages and calls, Id hate the nightmare of managing calls and messages on my game screen....
Im looking forward to it once Id seen igns hands on, pretty slick, if somewhat niche, unit 😀
@Titntin Yeah so true. When herself wants to do a few shrines in Zelda I can pop this thing on and play Baldur's Gate so she's not always the one on the small screen, and we can both keep bantering away to each other.
Lots of potential here in that regard.
@Luigia Bluetooth on the Switch was used for controllers first and foremost, with it opening to audio later.
This device has no need of Bluetooth, even though I wouldn't be stunned to see a Bluetooth chip in there anyway given factory level teardowns have revealed it's basically an Android tablet.
So that'll be fun.
Might buy this purely so my kid can play astro and free up the tv
I would've preordered now if the price had been right, but £200 for a streaming device, no HDR and wireless audio behind an additional paywall (PS Plus Premium, which I have but isn't the point)... Given the PS Vita cost me about as much and it played games, browsed the web and could remote play with the PS3 and PS4...
The form factor looks good. The (almost, slightly smaller sticks) full sized controller looks like it would improve the remote play experience, over previously mentioned methods. The price is all wrong.
My gut tells me there is more to it that sony doesn't tell right now..i guess we'll find out soon.
I see the media tab on this. I've tried remote play on media apps before and it just shows a black screen. Surely this won't be the case here? Otherwise :/
Can anyone speak on this? Need some clarity
Got it! Thanks for the heads up 👍🏼
Preordered and colour me excited. I've just endured the World Athletics Championship being on my TV all evening, every evening for days on end as my partner is a former athlete... would have been perfect to have at the time but illustrates the future use case in my one TV house!
PS I quite like athletics but I had no choice as my PS5 lay idle the entire time...
@zebric21 i feel the same
@Haruki_NLI I’m sure BlueTooth is in the device and a tear down will show. Then 12 months later they’ll enable it, once their headsets have met paydirt or been a flop
@Grimwood
Obviously to stream ps now games from the cloud.....wait..
"Battery life is said to last as long as the PS5 controller, too, but we’re still eager to test that claim for ourselves."
So batteries will be 75% depleted by the time it boots?
Does anyone know if the ps5 can do the work in rest mode?
@UltimateOtaku91 from my understanding the Switch always used Bluetooth in it's controllers from day one. So it was always there - just not for headphones which they implemented much later than release.
I'm grab one when they're on clearance in a year or so from now, for around $20-30.
No brainer purchase. Going to get a ton of use in my home, can't wait!
@redd214 shhhh haven’t you heard… it’s pointless and useless
@zebric21 No mate. If you turn on your portal it will boot your ps5 from rest mode, and you simply use it on the remote screen. It should be as quick and painless as starting up and playing with with your regular dual sense.
That's the beauty of a bespoke solution, you can make it pretty seemless to the user.
@Mikey856 silly me, totally forgot! Everyone has the same exact setup/needs so since it's not needed for some must be unnecessary for everyone else too
@Titntin I have a Samsung S95B - which I absolutely hate with a passion. I know my console booting up while someone else was doing a thing on it would wreck havoc on my stupid, stupid Smart TV.
@Cashews just turn off 'smart hdmi' or whatever Samsung call it, and your tv will ignore anything your hdmi connected equipment is doing. Having had all the hassles before, its now the first setting I look to adjust when I get a new telly 😀
@Titntin I swear to heaven above the thing will override my settings do it's own thing. I have literally watched dozens of hours of videos trying to optimize this pos since I bought it last year.
Christ...I could go on forever about how terrible this thing is. I'd sell it but that would suck even more time out of my life.
I harsh on Sony a great deal but the Sony tv we use as our main is a much better product than this much more expensive monstrosity.
I’m all for this device. I’m a big PS Vita fan and take it with me on trips often, even to work to give me something to during my lunch when I’m not hungry. That said, having a PlayStation Portal is perfect for me personally—and it’s amplified even more when it gets to the Fall and Winter months when my wife and I hardly leave the house, and there are more crowded people in our house instead, of whom take the television. Or, it’s something to play while I’m watching the NFL on Sunday or the NBA games that air late at night. I’m typically scrolling through my phone while the games are on anyway, so if I can still play my main hardware games, earn trophies, and occasionally watch the television at the same time, then I’m sold. That is what this device is for me, and I think the price point is fairly reasonable.
@Cashews Ouch sorry to hear that, that's a well rated screen too.
If you havent aleady, PS5/settings/system/hdmi/Enable HDMI Device Link - make sure its switched off.
Your TV cant miss-interpret a signal if one is never sent 😀
Im gonna come across as a pony now, but Ive always loved and used Sony TV tech. About 45 years of buying my own tv tech now and its mostly been Sony. I do have an LG c1 in the room as well as my main sony, but Sonys image processing and motion handling is always well ahead of the competition.
I wonder if Sony has eliminated the 'stick drift' on the analogue sticks for this? If not, it's going to be an expensive piece of useless kit after a year or so.
@Titntin thanks for the advice my man I'll follow it.
Sony tv pictures are incredible. What i didn't like about Sony is how they don't play nice with Google - I've bought a lot of movies on Google over the years.
BUT that was until i bought this new Samsung and realized how much better Sony is in the tv department.
S95B has a good screen - but the UI, the updates, the bugs, and the quality of physical product is bar none the worst I've owned in...ever I guess. I'll live. cheers have a good weekend!
I think I'll grab one in a couple years when they hit the bargain bin, just to have one. It's impossible to find a Vita TV and I have always regretted not grabbing one for 50 bucks at Walmart when I saw one.
I’ve not been following this that closely, so had no idea that standard Bluetooth headsets will not work with this. Are consumers really expected to purchase proprietary accessories just to listen to audio through headsets/earphones? As stated in other comments, it’s the Vita all over again.
@Constable_What
I picked up my PSTV for £25 in a Black Friday deal not that long after release (and not long after it failed to perform). They still command a decent price on eBay.
Nice, £200 was my budget for this so I’ve pre-ordered one.
I use PS Remote Play all the time on my phone so having a dedicated device will be nice.
@Styledvinny79, money is taken shortly before despatch so no harm ordering one for now
@LifeGirl my wife and I play coop games together. We only have room for one TV in our living room. Remote play is the perfect use case for this. I use it almost everyday.
@Luigia Dude, you've commented on, like, 10 different posts telling people that there will be Bluetooth in this device. There 👏 is 👏 no 👏 Bluetooth 👏. You cannot just "turn it on later." That isn't a thing. That's buying a regular desk and saying you're waiting for Ikea to add standing desk features to it later.
@NathanUC Okay, I'm confused by your comment. How do you think this device will solve the problem of only having one TV in your living room and playing co-op games with your wife? I'm genuinely curious.
@Vacuumator More like the WiiU all over again, and that old even worse than the Vita
@B_Lindz Because my wife plays on the TV with her PS5 and I play on remote play with my PS5. Maybe the part you are missing is it still requires 2 PS5.
This is how I play games almost every day.
This is something I really don't need. But I still kinda want it...its confirmed you can play anywhere in the world with a good wifi signal right??
@invictus4000 They mention home wifi, but nothing about outside wifi. I would hope it still works, but keep in mind over outside wifi is going to be a much worse experience. Latency jumps up a fair amount when you try remote play over internet
@B_Lindz Nintendo switch didn’t have it but was enabled later on.
@NathanUC Gotcha. Yeah, this is a wait and see kinda thing for me. The value I think greatly depends on individual circumstance. For some this is totally useless and for others a lifesaver. I'm kinda somewhere in the middle.
@Luigia That's actually a great point because Nintendo always said Switch straight up isn't Bluetooth compatible but we knew it was in there because that's how joycons work. One day they just switched it on (no pun intended). With Portal we KNOW it has Bluetooth capabilities from the get go because its compatible with thier specific headphones. So I'm sure they could open up that door whenever they want to.
Either way it doesn't matter to me because I have the pulse headphones already.
Chiaki is not great on Steamdeck (screen goes blank randomly)
I'll probably just get it. Wait until Bestbuy has it, I am sitting on tons of rewards points.
But I really would just want to use my Steamdeck for everything at this point. Rather Sony Just update the Windows app with SteamDeck support.
Removed - unconstructive; user is banned
@invictus4000 wise words and it’s a smart move to include Bluetooth and enable later on, once they’re happy to enable.
It will be funny to see what the box is like as it’s the first console I’ve bought that isn’t a console
People need to stop calling this a handheld when it's a peripheral for the ps5.
@Constable_What
With the crap Sony is pulling with the proprietary audio, in addition to the poor battery life, non OLED screen, and their track record for not supporting new tech for long, I feel you may not have long to wait.
@theMEGAniggle
I think that the double streaming is what may cause it to be an issue with the current app and phone setup and not really a licensing thing. But that's just an educated guess, not a fact.
@redd214 @redd214 ha exactly mate exactly
@Fyz306903 it’s literally a second screen. But people are so dumb these days what do you expect
Got six of these pre-ordered! The kids will love em! Great for when I spend extended time in the smallest room too.
It now states Out of stock!
looking forward to this releasing to dismal sales so sony can regret its decison to releasing it. then... and only then, will they wake up and develop a proper hybrid handheld to compete with steamdeck. for those of you who are ready and prepared to throw your money away for the greater good... you have my thanks!
@Moonvalley_PS Can you post some pictures for us?
@Porco or they will get the wrong message and say, "see, ps players aren't interested in handheld gaming" which isn't true, but alas.
@B_Lindz you keep calling it a Wiiu (actually worse), but pretty sure you can't take a Wiiu tablet in a another country and play Wiiu games via wifi. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
I can see the potential use case for me, but at £200 my issue is with the potential build quality. I am on my 3rd DualSense in 3 years after one broke an analogue stick and one developed sticky face buttons, both just out of warranty of course. What are the options when the same happens here?
@invictus4000 I haven’t read all of the material in depth, but could it not be the same as the PS5, where the Pulse headphones require the USB dongle to be plugged in for them to connect? If so then there really might not be any Bluetooth available.
@Saucymonk Do you have 6 PS5 consoles? Why do you need 6 of these?
@invictus4000 It doesn't use bluetooth. Sony is using a proprietary wireless audio chip in the Portal that is ONLY compatible with their PS5 headphones.
I cannot believe how many people in this chat still think that there is bluetooth in this device when Sony clearly stated that it does not have bluetooth. There is no bluetooth.
@LifeGirl I mainly play handheld whilst my wife and I watch tv / movies etc. because if this I exclusively play switch it SteamDeck and my PS5 never really gets played.
This will let me play it as often as I want and I’m excited to do so!
@naruball you are correct, you couldn’t. I guess this just takes the idea of the Wii U tablet off tv play and improves on it. Although Wii U didn’t use Wi-Fi so could be used with spotty or bad internet.
@invictus4000 I’m someone who never plays my PlayStation. Excuse I don’t have a lot of time to consume the tv. This will mean I actually can play it and often too
@mattb2020 I'd say break them just before the warranty expires But seriously, I get it. I had the same issue and I hated it. Thankfully (?), it happened early on and I got it replaced for free.
Best feature is that you can connect to your PS5 from any decent wi-fi!
@Vorlon does Portal come with a case to carry? If not then wondering how people will carry it around
Great news! No more arguments with the wife over the TV. I can finally spend more time playing football manager!
I personally won't be getting one as I would not use it,when I'm away anywhere for any reason ,I have phone use ,not that I use phone that much either just games of chess mainly if anything and just because of that tells me it would be waste of money for me at least ,I do see the uses other people would get from it though and it's a cool idea actually ,so all power to gamers who would get most from this,I did have a ps vita when that came out and I didn't quite honestly get the most from that either ,I'd toyed with getting a switch at some stage but I've got to know I'm gonna use it quite regularly and I just don't think I would,maybe one day I'll change my mind on these things ,it's a great idea though from Sony and hope people enjoy it
@LifeGirl there’s a description on the ps website. It’s basically so you can play your ps5 when someone else is using your tv. Or when you’re in a different room to your tv/ps5. Similar to remote play on iPhone and how it was on vita
@sammy just to clarify as per PlayStation themselves / it can ne used anywhere with a wi fo connection or 4G 5G etc.
Many have reported that this can only be played at home. Which is false.
@B_Lindz yes one for each of the kids and two for me.
