The fine folks over at Noclip are currently undertaking a huge restoration project, digitising hours and hours of gaming-related footage from a forgotten archive of tapes. If you hit up the YouTube channel, where all of this stuff is free to watch, you'll see old video game trailers, footage of cancelled projects, and old E3 press conferences. Sony's memorable E3 2006 presser has already been restored, and now, its presentation from E3 2010 is now available to watch in the best quality possible.
Embedded above, this two-hour show isn't one that's talked about too much, but there are still some memorable moments throughout. In the throes of PS3's big turnaround, the show certainly has its ups and downs, but there's plenty to like. The star of PS3's American ad campaign, Kevin Butler, appears onstage to make a rousing speech; there's a surprise appearance from Gabe Newell announcing Portal 2 for PS3; and a little something called PlayStation Plus is announced.
As well as all that, we get new trailers and demonstrations for the likes of Killzone 3, LittleBigPlanet 2, God of War: Ghost of Sparta, Gran Turismo 5, and lots more. There's also an emphasis on PS Move as Sony continues to push motion-controlled games for family audiences, which is funny to look back on over a decade later.
Will you be giving this PlayStation presser another viewing? Get hyped all over again in the comments section below.

I'll never forget Kevin Butler's face when he finished his speech. The guy was out of his mind on adrenaline, he'd never felt such hype from so many people.
Miss the likes of Shawn Layden and Kevin, brought real personality to Playstation, this was a well deserved re-upload, that was a time to honestly witness greatness.
They should have kept Butler around a few more years. Made him the 'Flo' of Sony. He was the last ad spokesman for a console I can remember.
@Cashews They dropped him after he made an ad for Nintendo lol
@MagisterMagi hmmmm I don't remember that!
edit: hah I'm watching it now! If he had an agent - that was a really boneheaded move!
So nice watching a conference where Geoff Keighley isn't on stage.
@Cashews yeaah like...if you are the spokesperson for a Company dont do business with their rivals lol
I was hooked on Nintendo at this point, the Wii and DS era had insane numbers of great games. It’s funny looking back at Sony’s first party output around this time because I played a lot of them a couple years afterwards and was surprised by how mediocre a lot of them were. Third parties seemed to be leaps and bounds ahead for a good number of years until the PS4 was a few years in.
@KAIRU I honestly don't understand the disdain many have for Keighley. Seems like a super cool dude who loves gaming as much as the rest of us.
I forgot about PS move. But I kinda love that Sony is willing to try new things (well move just copied Wii but still) like move, PS TV, PSVR/2 and probably the PS portal, that are very niche and probably won't make much money
@Cashews @MagisterMagi
The actor didn't do a commercial for Nintendo. He did a commercial for Bridgestone, a tire company, that was having a sales promotion featuring the Wii. Unfortunately, it looked like the VP of Everything at PlayStation really enjoyed the Wii and Sony did not like that. Thus, he was let go (or, rather, his contract was not renewed).
It's truly tragic because he was absolutely epic and the It Only Did Everything era of PlayStation was so exciting.
This E3 showcase was so good!! The announcement of a new Twisted Metal game filled my heart with so much joy and made me feel like a kid again - a feeling that wasn't matched until the God of War 2018 reveal.
Awesome!
@nessisonett I'm curious, did you not vibe with Killzone and Infamous? Think we had a few ratchet and clank games at this point too. It could be nostalgia but I thought the first party games were pretty good at this point in time. Shoutout folklore too, I wish for a remaster😭
@swagbag7 With E3 dead, I feel Keighley has done an admirable job at keeping the spirit alive with the game awards and summer game fest. Yeah it might not always be good, but something's better than nothing. Personally I think the game awards in particular has gone from an event that I could not care less about to something I actually look forward to. He really has improved.
@homelesscretin Agreed! but it's normal, it's lonely at the top.
@homelesscretin I’m only just getting round to the Ratchet and Clank Future games but I gather that the series went down the drain with the release of All 4 One and Full Frontal Assault, both of which went down the gimmick route and came out during this period of the PS3. Like, it felt as if a lot of series did that, with the PS2 games being great, the early PS3 ones being a step up and then a complete blank. God of War kinda treaded water after 3 until the reboot too.
@TheCollector316 the ad looked like more of a spot for the Wii than for the tires even. I get why Sony didn't enjoy the tire ad.
@TheCollector316 problem was also that he used the Butler Character in this ad which was copyrighted by Sony. And no, they actually sued him for copyright infringement
I was over on the 360 at this time. Sony’s arrogance with the PS3 at launch (I’ll admit they turned things around nicely) just completely turned me off. Plus, I was way more interested in Halo and Gears than anything Sony was doing. My, how times have changed…
@SlipperyFish Same. I love the quirky hardware that they release.
Sony have always released hardware for niche markets. Trinkets that they know won't take over the world like a PS5 or a Walkman will, it's another option if you want it.
@MasterChiefWiggum I was watching some of those butler ads for nostalgia on youtube and some of the Wii copies were so bad. I forgot how sad Move's ice cream cones were and how lame the Wii Mii copies in Mod Racers looked.
I wonder if a console can get over the hump of - massively successful and universally loved console > slight upgrade and not particularly liked console > massively successful and universally loved console > slight upgrade and not particularly liked console > forever...
cycle that PS and Nintendo go through. I think we will find out soon when Nintendo releases info on their next VR Neo Switch.
@MasterChiefWiggum Me too. I was happily nestled in on my 360 for most of that gen.
It was 2011 before I looked over at PS3 to see what I was missing. Shadow of the Colossus on PS2 was probably the last PS game I had played at that point.
Demon's Souls, Uncharted, God of War, Vakyria Cronicles were all out by then if I'm remembering correctly, but Demon's Souls in particular drew me in. I remember getting my PS3 with DS and Valkyria Chronicles and the very next day we had the big network hack. No PSN for a month 😂
Was worth it though.
That was definitely a fun one
@nessisonett Honestly you're pretty solid with ratchet and clank. Minus full frontal assault, I personally think all the ratchet games on ps3 were great including all 4 one😂.
Seriously tho full frontal assault was sooooo boring. Skip skip skippity skip.
@Shepherd_Tallon Yeah and I hope they don't stop making them. People seem to complain about the Portal a lot, almost forgetting they can just not buy it... and let the small group of people who will buy it enjoy it.
@Shepherd_Tallon Same here. I had the 360 and had no plans on changing but my dad ended up getting a PS3 slim on a whim. We got uncharted and the last of us and yeah they were fantastic games my whole family enjoyed playing. My 360 died, got another one but never quite got back into games until I got a PS4. My dad gave me his PS3 so now I get to go back and enjoy some of the other games I missed out on
Still like watching the PS4 reveal, just after M$ had dropped the ball with the XBone.
There are people cheering and even start chanting 'Sony' at one point!
These days, Ryan et al are more likely to get booed off stage...
Oh shoot, this was the conference that Gaben announced Portal 2? Crazy cause I remember that. I thought that was in 2011-12.
@SlipperyFish Personally I'll have lots of use for the Portal. I'm very eager to get my hands on it.
But yeah, I had to do a lot of catching up with PS3 in the end. I think I only really got caught up with all of the first party stuff that came out on it in the last few years. I think it had maybe 7 Ratchet and Clank games.
I been with PlayStation since day 1 in September 9.1995 in queens new york.those kevin adds were awesome.i miss jack tretton also.things have changes.word up son
@Shepherd_Tallon wow that's a lot of ratchet and clank games. I haven't played a single one yet! Been meaning to play rifts apart but haven't got around to it.
I don't have any form of Xbox anymore so I have even third party games to catch up on PS3! Will take a while. At least the games are cheap
I remember this. Kevin appearing on stage was glorious. I still have a backlog of games for my PS3.
Launch day when my PS4 arrived, I never looked back at the PS3 as everything was so slick and fast.
@MagisterMagi it was before that. And it was a tire commerical that had a Wii U in it, if I remember correctly.
@nessisonett All For One and Full Frontal/QForce had to exist. Sony pushed Insomniac to have co-op games as third parties had them.
So while Tools of Destruction, Quest for Booty (digital only unless physical in EU) and Crack in Time (don't forget Nexus may be short but is canon to the Future saga as the 4th entry so do play it then Rift Apart as the 5th in the storyline).
As per usual you had to have PSN or co-op or some move/sixaxis support. Watch the Golden Bolt's retrospectives he dives deeper in the dev side.
While some like GT having sixaxis and 3D was nice, Killzone 3/Resistance 3 work well with 3D and Move to aim and shoot (also simulview in Killzone is awesome of a rare feature for split screen I mean same screen co-op).
While others yeah can be hit and miss. I haven't played them all yet I just got the MotorStorm trilogy and beat 2 of the 3 campaigns in Apocalyse so far. Not even gotten to any Twisted Metal yet than the PS Classic having the first one. Never touched Warhawk ever but did Starhawk.
Honestly I have like no interest in the PS4 library from 2016+ other than what Gravity Rush 2, Knack 2 and Dreams. So PS1-3/PSP/Vita are more my type of games.
Concrete Genie I haven't played yet. The 'heavy hitters' were too lacking in game design appeal I was looking for and I went to Nintendo/the Vita for Wii U, 3DS and Switch all from 2017 to now and not been disappointed in doing so.
The Sony variety is what I seek, the Nintendo variety is good. Sure Mario Sports/Party updates are eh, (I don't play them anyway).
Cinematic games do nothing for me. Even Ratchet Future going cinematic it gets the job done, it's clear they try to be Disney but come off fairly well of a Dreamworks (which is a good thing in some ways) then in some moments like the Groovitron dances in Full Frontal Assault or some dialogue/movie moments feel very Illumination in 2016 on PS4, it is very Sony Animation/Illumination from Rainmaker and it's just so bad.
I don't mind this era. Only saw the clips a few times and I can see why. I am enjoying Move nowadays as I 'actually' have games on PS3 for them not just for PSVR.
PS Move Heroes has fine controls but is a party game. Sorcery is a game for Move and it's great.
@SuntannedDuck2 Sorcery was awesome. One of my favourite PS3 games. I do wonder why they didn't make a similar game on PSVR(2).
