Known as Kuro no Kiseki in Japan, publisher NIS America has confirmed that it'll be bringing the RPG westwards in the summer of 2024. Its official English name is Trails through Daybreak, and it's coming to both PS5 and PS4.
This new beginning in Falcom's Trails saga first released in 2021, but over the last 18 months or so, NISA's been wasting no time in localising the increasingly popular series. With the release of Daybreak, the west will be just one game behind Japan (that game being Kuro no Kiseki II: Crimson Sin — Daybreak's 2022 sequel). It's honestly crazy to think that we're almost caught up on the franchise.
Trails through Daybreak takes place in the Republic of Calvard, a powerful nation that neighbours the Erebonian Empire — the setting of the Trails of Cold Steel titles. It features a new protagonist named Van Arkride, and the game strives to tell a more 'mature' story.
There will of course be a limited physical edition — available through the NIS America online store in the US and Europe — which includes the following:
- The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak Deluxe Edition (PS5 or PS4)
- "Trails Uncovered" 240+ Page Art Book
- "Calvard in Concert" 1-disc Digipak OST
- Steelbook
- "Arkride Solutions" Business Card Case
- "Calvardian Cinema" Movie Poster Art Card Set
- "Oct-Genesis" Outer Sleeve
- Collector's Box

Amazing. They did well if it ends up really being a Summer 2024 release.
Exciting stuff! I'm still on Sky SC having started a few months back. Hope to be at Crossbell at least by the time this releases!
Even though I haven't played Cold Steel yet, I am beyond excited for this!
YES! I love this wonderful series. I have been replaying them once again in chronological order. Playing Trails To Azure as I speak!! Can't wait for Daybreak! And got Boundless Trails pre-ordered as well! Keep em coming Nihon Falcom!!
A business card case?
insert obligatory American Psycho Christian Bale meme
I do need to get caught up on this series. I plowed through all of the Trails in the Sky over the last month or two and am taking a break with Sea of Stars before I jump back into Crossbell.
Great timing since I'm going a falcom event in Tachikawa tomorrow.
Need to finish Cold Steel 4 and play Reverie. Liked Cold Steel 3 but the series has definitely massively regressed since Crossbell. Heard good things about this one though.
@mcdreamer Don't be discouraged, it's a long journey, but worth it!
I heard they changed the battle system with this one. But I don't wanna watch anything of it to confirm xD guess I'll find out on release if I like it
There's too many trails games, how do I know what order to play? Are these games a continuation from previous games or is it a new story each game?
Great news. We are finally getting caught up.
@CutchuSlow They're all linked in terms of story but you can still start at the first game of each arc and enjoy that specific saga. So Trails from Zero or Trails of Cold Steel, for example.
Shameless plug of the guide I wrote on this subject, which is hopefully useful: https://www.pushsquare.com/guides/best-trails-games-ranked-which-trails-games-to-play-and-where-to-start
Excuse my language but ***** YES. Glad to see NISA keep this Kiseki train going!
Always down for more Trails. Coming out well clear of the current RPG glut.
@ShogunRok ok thanks. So it would be ok for me to start from daybreak?
@CutchuSlow Yeah, I believe so. I've been told by multiple people that it's actually a really good starting point because it feels very self-contained, and it's set in a nation that hasn't been explored in previous games (complete with all-new characters).
It's not coming in February! I'm so pumped for this one! Next year is going to be absolutely insane for JRPG fans!
@Pandalulz How did you play them? I've got 1 and 2 digitally on my PSP and I'm planning on playing the 3rd on my jailbroken PS Vita with an english patch.
Oh, and how did the 1st sky go? I'm struggling a bit since the story is kind of slow in the beginning, but I read it pays off in the end.
@Korgon The sigh of relief when it wasn't "early 2024"!
@nessisonett sadly Cold Steel is the weakest arc but CS4 and Reverie are outstanding.
Heard good things about Kuro/Daybreak so I’m SUPER excited. Van seems to be a great protagonist, which I’m over the “friendship is power” trope of Lloyd and to a lesser extent Rean.
@cjay_001 I’m convinced that they wrote Lloyd and Rean to be cluelessly lusted after by every single female cast member because there’s not a single woman in that writing room. It’s mad considering that the Sky trilogy shied away from most of that. I mean sure, the whole pseudoincest was dodgy but truly detest the harem angle, it’s such an infantilised view of relationships.
I've recently completed Trails of Cold Steel 2 and I've read that I should now play Trails of Zero, but, do I really have to? Since they have only just brought that game over to the west. Surely they wouldnt of skipped important parts of the game out when they released Trails of Cold Steel 3 before Zero.
I want to plough through the Cold Steel series before this new series comes out so I think I'm better off waiting for the 3/4 double pack rather than playing Zero and Azure first.
@Mauzuri I admit I am tempted, especially with now a 3+ month wait for the 3/4 double pack release. I don't know if it's the visuals that's putting me off.
How long are the Crossbell games?
@nessisonett they tried too hard to be Persona. It was an experiment that didn't pan out. But they've moved on from it. And it's not nearly as painful later. They figured out that people didn't like it.
@Czar_Khastik I played the first one on PSP when it came out and then waited and waited and waited for the second. I don't really like playing on handhelds though, I find it terribly uncomfortable. So when I decided to finally decided to play through the trilogy now, I bought them all on Steam, my PC is plugged into my living room TV, Bluetoothed a Dualsense and played them with my butt on my couch. The first game is pretty slow for about the first half and then barrels towards the end. Then the second resets and it takes a bit to start up again. The third is a different thing as it's a straight dungeon crawler. It's hard to not recommend it because it's effectively an epilogue to the other games and has probably the best combat and soundtrack, but I just didn't enjoy it as much.
I've played the previous games multiple times all nightmare runs as well I'm definitely ready for this game
@Pandalulz Thank you, this is one of the best answers I found online. Buying them on Steam is currently the best option to be honest. Who knows, maybe NIS is preparing a remastered trilogy for PS4/5, like they did with Nayuta and Zero/Azure.
Regarding the story progression, it's nice to know that in the end it pays off to be persistent with these games even though it is a bit of a rollercoaster. I'll get myself to continue my Sky save on PSP. Maybe I'll even plug it into my monitor to experience it on a bigger screen like you did.
Aren't there some older games not on modern consoles? Hopefully we can get those too.
