The UK's latest boxed games chart has arrived, and to the surprise of nobody, Bethesda's sci-fi RPG Starfield is king of the castle this time. Generally speaking, Xbox games don't tend to do well at physical retail, but this huge exclusive is definitely breaking that convention. While we don't have specific numbers, the game quickly found its way to 6 million players; it'd be interesting to know how many of those bought a disc rather than claiming on Game Pass.
Anyway, it's knocked Hogwarts Legacy down into second place, while LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga moves from second to fourth. Interestingly, Mortal Kombat 11 has been in the top 10 for several weeks, and is now at its highest position of number five. Presumably this is due to the mounting excitement for Mortal Kombat 1, which is only a matter of days away, but it's possible that 11 is currently reduced in price — perhaps a bit of both.
NBA 2K24 debuts at number seven, selling the vast majority of its physical copies on PS5, while GTA 5 holds steady in eighth.
Here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 9th September, 2023
- Starfield
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga
- Mortal Kombat 11
- The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom
- NBA 2K24
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Fae Farm
- Minecraft (Switch)

Ole Todd Howard preaches how exclusivity benefited Starfield, I wonder if we’ll see a tonal shift on the Xbox side now regarding exclusives since Starfield is the success that Xbox needed.
Bethesda could have more than doubled sales if it released on PS5 also but they are just an arm of Xbox now. All their games will be exclusive from now on.
They deserve it. I’ve never been so in love with a new game so quickly before and it’s only getting better and better. I just want to experience every single detail to the fullest.
MS has the western RPG market cornered and their monopoly making practices will continue.
Weird nobody is talking this was forcefuly taken of the multiplatform market. The industry is OK with MS acquiring everything and making it exclusive now.
If it was multiplatform it would be on top for a few weeks but it will be dropping down the list hard from next week, plus it's launched in a quiet week so you would expect it to be top.
So much for "Xbox players are trained to not buy games"
@UltimateOtaku91 I wonder if its success will encourage Phil Spencer to make all Bethesda IP exclusive to Xbox, including the legacy IP like TES and FO.
Phil’s comments seem to be worded so he doesn’t need to remain committed to what he says.
@Sil_Am Don’t worry, they (MS) will probably run it into the ground and then sell it on.
@UltimateOtaku91 It launched literally the same day as BG3's PS5 version, what are you on about?
@Godot25 all it took was them to remove a new IP off an existing platform (where it was fully intended to be released) where it made the most of its sales.
@Rols whilst sales would have been higher, I don’t think they would have “more than doubled”. You think more people would buy on Playstation than PC and Xbox combined? Remember it’s on Steam too. The only way that works is if you only count physical (which is… dumb).
@clvr how is it not plausible that it sold more than BG3 because it launched on 2 platforms, vs 1, where the majority of people have already been playing it on PC?
Out of interest, what's the RPG like in Starfield? Is it Fallout 3 style, where missions and quests involve some moral quandary and you can complete them in a variety of ways depending on how you feel about it, or is it more like Fallout 4 where you can be compliant or snarky in conversations, but your options for completing the quest are more limited?
Be adding to Hogwarts Legacy PS5 sales today from Argos. Then probably save it for December
@Rols - And Spider-Man could have sold more had it released on Xbox. Between Xbox and PC Starfield is doing just fine. As did Spider-Man between PS and PC.
@Sil_Am - Sony tried to money hat Starfield exclusivity, it became multi-plat under MS . Weird that people ignore that.
@Shigurui all I’ve read is that MS was concerned Sony was going for timed exclusivity on it, is there any solid proof in writing that they were? And sure it may have become multiplat yet if it were to be only timed exclusive on PS5, more would have still been able to play it when that time ran out
@Shigurui and you've heard this on what official source, xbox fanboys on tweeter?
Warner Bros is the real winner here, they must be making alot of bank off Hogwarts, MK and LSW!
@Shigurui multi plat as in available on xb and PC? Amazing. If only Sony were to do that with any 3rd party game they paid for.
@PSme Whatever hate people may have for Sony, their way of operating is different. They saw that Stellar Blade and Lost Souls Aside are having development issues and offered publishing exclusivity in exchange of helping them finish the games. That is how you do it.
@WizzNL @General_Disarray I know, I was just commenting on the "quiet week" part.
@Loamy Thanks. It was a detail I thought was noticeable by its absence in reviews I read.
@General_Disarray - You know as well as I that we're dealing with anecdotals here but after GW Tokyo and Deathloop do you doubt it? Timed or otherwise Sony wanted Starfield one way or another and pissed on their chips trying for it.
@clvr BG3 might be good but the fact is that's its a niche game just like the previous entries, also it isn't in the list because it's not even available physically and this list is physical only.
@Shigurui that’s what I thought, thanks!
@General_Disarray I doubt they will make the online multilayer games exclusive as they will need all the money they can get, they are losing money by making their new single player games exclusive as is. Their original forecasted revenue from starfield has plummeted since going xbox exclusive without the planned playstation sales.
I would be very surprised if they even recuperate their development costs on starfield.
@Shigurui Pretty sure Sony doesn't have Starfield timed exclusivity money. Stop trusting any idiot on tweeter. Actually I'm sure Deathloop and Ghostwire wouldn't even have been made without Sony involvement.
Starfield is amazing but it's been crashing constantly for me on Series S is anyone else having the same issue?.
@Loamy niche on console, it's always been primarily a PC game. This is going off their previous sales of their other games on playstation.

I bought Starfield on Steam, and now have a small amount of buyers remorse
It has all the trappings of a Bethesda game and, if you compare it to Skyrim or Fallout, it is slightly better in some respects. But it has none of the excitement or sense of wonder that you got with Skyrim and none of fun that Fallout had.
It's, basically, a bit boring to be honest. Compare it to contemporary games like NMS, BG3, or Horizon and it falls so far short of the bar it's almost painful to see. There is nothing about it that screams next gen etc. I get a feeling this will be forgetten about a lot faster than Skyrim et al. Or if it is remembered it'll be for when Bethesda lots its mojo. And I wonder how much of that has to do with Microsoft?
@Loamy So PlayStation gamers missing out entirely is better then the alternative?
I wouldnt be celebrating getting top spot of all of those games, it would be like doing a victory lap because you managed to beat a bunch of old age pensioners at the 400m
@MoorePs5 hahaha damn, shots fired.
@General_Disarray 😂, I've got an xbox series x as well and I quite like starfield but that is a slow week for games, mostly older games
Oh let xbox have its time, it doesn't happen very often.
Bet the folk at Pure Xbox are happy.
The game released at a great time. I doubt it sold more than 3 million which would be a bit over half of what God of War Ragnarok sold in a week on just one console. Considering this was on GamePass and PC I'm not even sure 6 million is that crazy of a number. People are really falling for this new metic of engagement but I'm old school, if it isn't a sales figure I don't really care. Now Zelda selling 10 million in a weekend? That's impressive! I expect Spidey 2 will have very impressive numbers too.
I've got Series X and PS5 - Starfield is decent but Spiderman 2 will crush it !
Good to see Starfield do well in the physical market. It’s impressive because Xbox is heavily digital, it’s a PS centric country and it’s on Game Pass.
Personally I’m really enjoying it. About 21 hours in and bar a few small bugs and people getting stuck in walls and doors I’ve not had anything major.
@Jimboss Same there's been nothing game breaking so far but the crashing is getting worse the longer i play. I don't trust any reviews now after Jedi Survivor got glowing reviews that downplayed the performance issues it had on every platform.
@Sil_Am totally agree 👍🏻
@General_Disarray Isn't PC the most popular platform for BGS games?
@eltomo nah, they're over there complaining about review-bombing being done by Sony fans whilst forgetting the fact they'll be doing the exact same when Spider-Man 2 drops.
@Godot25 whoops, thought you mean BG games and not BGS games.
Are they? Don't care, console wise they always sold best on PS and the same would probably still be true if SF remained multiplat as it was originally intended.
Removed - flaming/arguing
So how many sales does it generally take to get to the top of the sales chart? I guess it’s hard to tell where you are in sales when there are no other big releases and you’re just ahead of games that have already been out for ages, but would be interesting to know.
@PixelDragon At least read whole conversations.
User said that Microsoft pulled Starfield from platform where it would sell best. I said that BGS games tend to sell best on PC...Nothing more, nothing less
In a weird turn of events, an console exclusive Xbox game tops the physical charts when a PlayStation console exclusive releases on digital only. Usually you’d expect the opposite of that since Xbox players lean toward buying digital. But yeah, without Baldur’s Gate 3 numbers it’s tough to compare how the two heavyweight games did head-to-head.
It would have been nice if Baldur’s Gate 3 released physically too. I would have been more prone to pick it up if I knew I could resell it in the event it didn’t click with me.
@Th3solution F
If you look at Steam concurrent players, things are pretty equal. BG3 has 346k and Starfield 330k.
@naruball - I guess you knee-jerked past the point where I clearly mention Sony putting Spider-Man on PC.
@PixelDragon a question no one seems to ask when one of the Playstation Studios games are at the top. Glad Push Square etc try and post the combined Physical/Digital totals more now as they are actually relevant.
@MoorePs5 the reason it didn't release against any big hitters is because no publisher wanted to release on the same weekend as Starfield. The game itself pushed their timeline back or forward.
Hogwart's is about to add 5-8M copies once it releases on the Switch. I hope the game isn't a mess and is well optimized.
@Godot25 to be fair they haven't had a good exclusive for years
@AdamNovice - Having put a fair few hours in on PC I can say, sad as it is, Playstation owners aren't actually missing out on anything. There are better alternatives on that platform already.
@Sil_Am I don't know man, I feel like Microsoft's publishing deal for Psychonauts 2 is way better of an industry example. Multiplatform release as well.
How I wish everyone could just play like that.
It’s interesting how salty these comments are toward Starfield. Personally, I think it’s fantastic Xbox finally has a strong title that is also a hit on their hands. Competition is good for the industry. I hope Xbox forces Playstation to do better.
That said, Starfield totally deserves its first place as well. A lot of people have talked poorly about the game and have been critical of it, but it’s quite the engrossing journey once you dive deep into it. I’m really enjoying my adventure in the collected systems currently. It’s not goty, but it is solid. The fact that console gamers got Starfield, Sea of Stars, and Baldur’s Gate all at the same time… gamers are getting spoiled… and that feeling isn’t going to slow down for another two months.
@Cherip-the-Ripper MS had to make that a multiplat because it was crowd-funded. It certainly wasn't from the goodness of their hearts.
Todd Howard has praised Starfield's exclusivity for its development and how it would still be in development if it were multiplat as well. Now that people at Xbox are praising exclusivity, will the Xbox enthusiasts change their tone as well now that they're seeing the benefits of console exclusivity? There will probably be praise of it again when Indiana Jones is released, again, a game that was meant to be multiplat.
Sony is still publishing multiplat games as well, everything Bungie does and Helldivers 2 will be releasing on PC as well.
@Shigurui yup. I'm the problem here. Clearly.
Also, you missed my point entirely. Gotta love the irony.
@Pranwell starfield is great ,but its nothing like the witcher 3
Very happy to see Starfield at the top. It is an incredible game and my GOTY. I am loving it so far and I've only just gotten started.
@Godot25 fair comment BUT this is the first of its kind. We have not seen a Gamepass title sell so well at physical retail until now. There's no doubt Gamepass canablised retail sales for other titles on the Xbox side, Wo Long Fallen Dynasty as an example. I believe with subscription spending plateauing, this data is going to give Microsoft food for thought e.g. perhaps Sony were right - Premium IP releases are king.
It'd be weird if Starfield wasn't in top spot in release week. A much smaller percentage buy physical now, but that's all physical games, not just specific ones, and the new AAA games are always going to be top of physical charts.
Be interesting to see how it sticks around though, can it mimic games like GoW and Hogwarts as it should be considered in a similar class, right? A game like Starfield should be charting for multiple weeks in a year, and coming back to the top 5 every single time its on sale too, for even longer.
In terms of PS digital sales, BG3 is still top 2 (UK PS store) after having been in the top ten during the pre order phase for at least a few months that I've noticed too.
P.S if you are on the fence... just buy BG3 if you've ever enjoyed any kind of deep, layered RPG before. I'm in love with it already 😍
@Ravix "if you are on the fence... just buy BG3 if you've ever enjoyed any kind of deep, layered RPG before. I'm in love with it already 😍"
Same. Took the gamble and was glad I did, easily be one of the best games this year.

@Loamy Yeah, I don’t think there’s a definite time frame for the physical release, but I wish we knew. My suspicion is that when the Xbox version drops then the physical version will release alongside. Which that could be…. like 6 months from now?
@PixelDragon Yes, I’ve wondered the same thing. Especially when games like MK11 chart and month after month of GTA5. I think it doesn’t take many copies to register on these physical sales charts.
@thefourfoldroot1 That’s about what I figured. I suspect both games are selling and being played in roughly the same ballpark.

@cuttlefishjones skyrim came out at a time, when there wasn't many open world rpgs of that ilk on console, now they're two a penny,I love it personally ,but its just skyrim in space, with mechanics theyve stolen from nms and elite,and then dumbed them down.
I think there should be a way to either report a proper sales with digital copies too, or just stop publishing these physical sales altogether. Physical sales account for what, like 25% sales?
Starfields fps suffers the longer you play just like most of these bethesda rpgs,something to do with the way the game stores data, the engine is garbage, regularly clearing out your save slots ,and clearing the cache,seems to remedy it somewhat.
@Pranwell doesn't make you right though 😁
That 6 million figure is from the Thursday, @MinotauroBJJ. I would strong expect the figure to be much higher for the weekend. Time will tell.
I would say that 3 million sales for a game that is ALSO available to be played 'free' on the Game Pass is a pretty decent number of sales. Apparently, the game sold 2 million copies at £100 a pop, for the early access version, which is a whopping 200 million in sales before the game even released on the Thursday.
I've also seen people commenting on this site that they have bought an Xbox in order to play the game, so likely as not Microsoft will have seen an uptick in Xbox sales, and new Game Pass subscriptions.
I'd say that Microsoft are probably very satisfied with the way things panned out. Worst possible outcome would have been for everyone to just play it on Game Pass, and thus generating barely any revenue.
@Cherip-the-Ripper What? They didn't even make a PS5 version of Psychonauts 2. If you are not informed, they only brought the game to PS4 because that version was already crowdfunded. MS doing good for the industry, just look at the Starfield physical version, try installing it offline. Hint, you can't.
There's a huge amount of bitterness in this comments section.
@tallythwack You sure mate?
Forza Horizon 5 is second best rated console exclusive this gen behind God of War Ragnarok. Microsoft Flight Simulator is third best rated console exclusive this gen.
Xbox had excellent year in 2021 thanks to Psychonauts 2, Age of Empires IV, Microsoft Flight Simulator, Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite. It was 2022 which sucked ass.
Good for Starfield. I am loving it. I can see it taking up most of my year at this rate. I can't remember the last game that hooked me like this.
I'd really like to play Starfield but I can't afford to buy an Xbox only to play this game. I think it's a nice success and they did great with this one I must admit. As PS fan I'm little bit concerned about Sony western RPG output in the future, ,but we'll see...
@Tatarimokke apparently Sony Santa Monica are working on a sci-fi RPG.
@MoorePs5 comment 44 lol
This comment section is funny. Before release they call the game the game of the generation, then the game releases and it happens to be overall good but not what the hype established and no one says anything about the game (here) and finally news about sales are out and now suddenly people appear again to talk about the game.
@Godot25 dude you realize halo infinite basically killed the ip right? lol
It would have been really cool to have seen this game on PlayStation. Iam a bit sad that this is not the case..
Well done to Betheseda and Microsoft
Very impressive considering the UK is Sony dominant. Competition is good for us the consumers so long may they battle it out for supremacy
I'm so glad starfield has done well and has hit top of sales charts as if there was any doubt. Bethesda makes best games when it comes to open world.
They have put alot of work into this game and I for one am enjoying it very much. Can't wait to see how Elder scrolls 6 and fallout 5 will turn out . Well done Bethesda for making another classic of a game. Your number 1 fan.
Always nice to see good games sell well. Hope it has long legs.
@GymratAmarillo Live service of Halo Infinite killed that game...
...Halo Infinite at launch was damn fine game. 86 on OpenCritic which is same score as Returnal, and only 2 points worse score then Forbidden West.
It was fact that 343 released only one new season during first year of the game what "broke" the game. So maybe we don't need to rewrite history
I’m actually surprised at the #1 ranking for Starfield given it’s on Game Pass, and given how drastically Xbox users tilt towards digital.
At the same time, zero surprise at peope trying to rationalize it and make up excuses why it’s doing so well. Few things are as expected as that.
@NinjaNicky it sold 2 million at $100 a copy for early access. The spilt was even at 1 million on PC and 1 million on Xbox. So that’s a strong showing of 2 million in sales at a high price point before it even launched on GP. I have GP but i will buy it when i want to take a break from Diablo 4. I also want to try FF16 on PS5. Lot’s of good games are selling well in 2023 on all platforms and Services.
@Godot25 psychonauts was also on ps5 ,halo was garbage ,flight simulator and age of empires are niche titles and wouldve been ignored by xbox players, without gamepass ,forza is a good game,but then its forza and its always good ,halo infinites campaign was absolute tripe,and don't get me started on its MP ,so yeah starfield is ms best game for years.
@oliverp yeah those loading screens wouldve been improved as well.
@HonestHick You could upgrade the GamePass version for just $30 to get early access at least that's what I was told, also saw multiple comments of people saying they did just that on the Pc version.
Edit: I'm not sure if Xbox would actually count that as a sale though as it's just effectively paying more to rent.
@Godot25
Are you implying a highly-anticipated once-in-a-decade game selling well for at least one week wipes out all the data we have for all the previous years in which Game Pass existed? Weird take.
As I say to my coworkers all the time, the numbers do not lie.
@Pranwell Yeah no kidding. I mean, it was easy to complain about Xbox for legitimate reasons for most of the generation this far, but let them have the success for now. After the Redfall debacle and Halo Infinite disintegrating, they need it. And, for the Sony fanboys, if Sony doesn’t have legitimate competition from Xbox or other platforms, they’ll be complacent. If you’re not a Spider-Man fan, Sony has had no other new first party PS5 titles this year (if you don’t count Horizon: Call of the Mountain as a PSVR2 title). I say, bring the competition, so we continue to have the giants bring their best games forward. The industry is at its best when it’s trying to reach new heights.
@Tharsman I mean, I would think most Bethesda fans are the types who play the game over a long period of time. It's cheaper to buy it outright than to play it using Game Pass.
On topic: Congrats to Microsoft and Bethesda. I know any exclusive Bethesda developed/published release will be a controversial one on this site for at least the next couple of years, but one must still applaud the accomplishment - much like one would applaud a Spider-Man or God of War release being #1.
I am enjoying Starfield - though I haven't really played any modern games the past several days as I got hooked on messing around with retro games on DOSBox and SCUMMVM.
@MrMagic It wasn't just early access. It also means access to the Expansion when it releases. Something Game Pass doesn't give you access to for subscribing in most cases - at least not for Bethesda titles (Doom Eternal's expansion is still required to purchase to access).
@GamingFan4Lyf Yeah, but couldn't you just pay $30 and get early access and the expansion for the GamePass version? I was just wondering if Xbox counted that as a sale even though it was still just renting.
Would love to play Starfield, but my name ain’t Richie Rich so I can’t afford both consoles (or a gaming PC). Genuinely sucks that Bethesda games are being money hatted away from others (I know Sony does this too, and that ain’t right either. But Bethesda were multiplatform for a long time).
Checking the steam reviews it's no longer rated very positive and has dropped to mostly positive, it seems to be on a steady decline and a lot of the top streamers have been ripping it a new one. I've got to say from what I've saw of it so far it does look as boring as they say but I'll reserve judgment until I actually get around to playing it.
@MrMagic I don't know if that counted as a sale. I guess it's more counted as a DLC sale, than a base game sale.
I mean, yeah, it's basically renting...but I think as long as you bought the Premium Upgrade, if you decided to buy the base game outright at a later time, you'd still have access to the Premium Content you paid for.
I guess that's the weird part about buying DLC for games you don't own.
@MrMagic It's got over 100 posts on a PlayStation website just about UK sales (lol UK sales) and it has people like you checking it's steam numbers, reviews and watching streams on it just to cope.
I'd say it is a hit by any metric.
@MrMagic yeah not sure thats a sale. I did see that, but it was stated in a few articles i saw that the game sold 2 million early access’s, so i am not sure nor do i care that much. I just always thought the Xbox players don’t buy games thing was a touch right and wrong. Sure some gamers will just play it on the service but many gamers and myself buy all my games on my Xbox and PS5. I use GP and PS+ as a way to just try games i normally wouldn’t.
@HonestHick imo none of it matters - the game is a hit.
The one that truly matters comes out on october 23rd - MS's financials. If it captures this month (Idk if it does or doesn't) it will either show a significant spike on subs or it won't. MS's long term plan is obviously subs over unit sales so I believe this number matters to them a great deal. I think it will be the difference between them phasing the console out (in some fashion) or staying the course.
@GamingFan4Lyf I did buy the full game… twice. I paid $300 for the constellation edition for PC, meaning Steam (same reason I bought the Tears of the Kingdom OLED switch…. Because I’m an idiot) and and also bought the Windows Store $100 version so I could play it across Xbox, PC and xCloud with cloud saves.
As for buying DLC for games in Game Pass, i don’t think is any stranger than buying DLC for physical games you might later sell, trade in or give away.
@Tharsman MS at financial meeting:
"Bob, what is the report?"
"Well sir, So we have 1 million sales on the pc. 2 million upgrade packages on the xbox and 100,000 of the special edition sales. Gamepass subs are up 170%."
"Good, good. Anything else Bob?"
"Well sir...we have this person named Tharsman who spent $1500 on a game without dlc. We are worried the press might get wind of it and say we are anti-mental health."
"Send the chopper to pick up this...Tharsman...right away."
"Yes sir."
@Cashews I almost got a 3k PC exclusively for the game... so the tag would be above 1.5k...
"lucky" me, due to part shortages my order got cancelled and due to other RL issues ended up just playing it on my laptop, that has a 3080 so still rather decent experience.
When I hype on a game, I tend to throw quite a bit of money at the thing. With Tears of the Kingdom, I got the OLED switch, Amiibos, and the special edition controller. Yes, I also got the Starfield xbox controller...
It's not often I hype that much. Last two games I hyped on were Assassins Creed Valhalla and Final Fantasy 7 Remake (I ended up buying that game 3 times... The collector's edition that didn't arrive day one, the digital edition so I could play it day one, and later on Intergrade on PS5.)
@Tharsman Can you buy me a $3K PC and we can talk about the game every day to continuing fueling your hype?! LOL!
@GamingFan4Lyf lol, as I said, RL got in the way of me just placing another order. Cars are expensive
@SplooshDmg
Just let them live!! I have seen comment sections more argumentative than this on sports or political sites and nobody tells them to "touch grass" or anything as equally condescending. We are passionate about our hobby and it's no different than supporting a Sports Ball team or whatever.
Nice to see Starfield as its excellent, has a slow start but once it gets going oh boy does it get going.
@Rols By that logic Sony should put Spider-Man 2 on Xbox for those extra sales.
@MikeOrator I'm here to inform you that your request has fallen on deaf ears. Grass. Touch it.
@Cashews Yeah, I definitely need to cope after the so called "game of the generation" was actually a bit of a dud.
@GamingFan4Lyf Yeah that makes sense, it was just the way they were advertising it made me think they may actually be counting that as a sale.
Not surprised, loving Starfield so far. If you into Space and exploration, the game is a dream.
That said... there is still no Aloy or Kratos or Ellie or Drake or Morales. You are basically controlling a cardboard cut out as things happen around you (even JEDI and Mass Effect gave you more of a sense of being part of a crew you care about as a unit)
The Sony magic of creating a narrative around central characters that elevates a story/world beyond what it actually merits (SE nailed it also with FFXVI) is nowhere to be seen here.
@Rols maybe but we probably won't know how many new gamepass subscribers it pulled in.
@Agramonte Yeah that is Bethesda. Clearly design choice. Instead of Sony or Square Enix telling you that you must save the world from another impending ecological disaster, or guy with a really big magic sword who wants to re-create another timeline or whatever you are placed in a world and you use to imagination to create that world - with the the tools they give you. That doesn't really deviate from TES or Fallout.
Some people need to be on tighter rails. Some don't want that at all. More don't. Skyrim is the most successful rpg of all time by 2x.
@Sil_Am I don't think you understand what a monopoly is
@Toot1st you for sure will know when MS has their quarterly financial report on October 23rd.
@GymratAmarillo nobody said it was a game of a generation literally a handful of fan boy trolls and personally I am finding the game fantastic not just good but amazing it's one of the games that you think about when not playing
@Godot25 it's great to see the newest entry in a 20 year old franchise with a huge fanbase be just as good as a new IP from a small dev team with minimal additional content.
I can't wait for Housemarque's next new IP on PS5 😁
@tallythwack hifi rush was fantastic earlier in the year
@Cashews how could it not be one of the most successful RPGs when it's playable on almost everything?
Would it be as successful as it was if it stayed only on the 7th Gen, when it was released?
@Rangers420 had a couple of crashed on my series X the first day but no problems since
@General_Disarray Of course not. But it is a chicken and egg. Skyrim would never have released on every potato known to man if it hadn't of been ridiculously successful to begin with. The only ones who get that treatment really are the GTAs and Fortnites and Skyrims of the world.
@SplooshDmg
It's all good. It is a PlayStation fan site, so if you can come up with an activity more fun than complaining about the PlayStation, and whoever is in charge of it, I implore you to share it. I mean besides your go-to patronizing statement of "touch grass". I am sure if we wanted to touch the grass, we would touch the grass. I mean its just outside, out the door, out of the basement.
(hey does anyone know how to put sod in a basement)
@Cashews cough cough RE4 cough cough
@MikeOrator sure dude, go to your local Home Depot, buy a patch, get some lumber, build a little box with a bottom the size of said patch, lay said patch in box.
If you buy a patch small enough, you can even carry it with you where you go so you can touch grass anywhere!
@General_Disarray 100%. I've still yet to buy that one again because the first GC version was utter perfection. I don't want to mess up that game in my mind.
Funny you mention it - I was just (like a few days ago) looking at the remake video - really liking the way it looked and thought, "why am I holding on to this stupid, old idea just play the damn thing again!"
but dern I loved that thing when it came out!
@General_Disarray it will die in the basement. buy a patch of fake grass instead. Fake grass is pretty good these days and it is all 'retro cool' looking.
i know these posts are all /s but you could do it!!
@Cashews I bought a GC for RE4 and it was worth every penny, the second time I bought it was on the Wii and I absolutely loved how they implemented motion controls.
If only they would have done it for the Switch version as well, le sigh.
@Cashews to quote one of my favourite songs "f*ck anything retro", but if floats your goats then I won't be the one to let them sink.
But yeah, I can't even keep a spiderplant alive 🤣
Sorry, you haven't played the RE4 remake yet?
@General_Disarray I have not. I usually never buy remakes of old games I owned at some point. I have not played RE4 since the GC version. I've read so many good things about this game I think I need to break that dumb rule I've made for myself.
@Cashews Why restrict yourself from having a good time?
@General_Disarray I feel life is short and there is so much new content to see and do - I'd rather spend that time and money on completely brand new experiences. Since money is always finite to some degree I generally choose to give it to innovation rather than someone milking a thing over and over.
Just my personal way of doing things. I do this in all things except bars and vacations.
@Cashews see, I'm opposite, life IS short (very much agree) there is no judgement after death so there's nothing wrong with overindulgence, and I can't take my wealth with me so I may as well enjoy what I can because there won't be another opportunity to do as such.
"Just my personal way of doing things. I do this in all things except bars and vacations."
Bahahahaha, laughing with you on this, there's always exceptions to the rule.
So let me get this right just so I know....ps gets number one selling game its omfg they sold amazing.....microsoft gets a number one selling game its ....how little copies must be sold to get to number one ....... wow
@BacklogBrad exactly the same for me , I'm a big gamer normally but starfield is like crack to me, this is how it goes ....on my way to start a main Misson..stop off in to a vendor ohhhh I like that ship ....I can save money with the commerce skill... I'll go do that ..... vendor ohhh i like that gun .... ohhh ive eqrned a new skill point ill pop it into outpost enginnering ....start getting that up .while the main missions wait patiently for me
@Cashews “MS's long term plan is obviously subs over unit sales”
Here is where i am kindly going to disagree. Phil has said before on camera GP isn’t for every gamer or studio. Meaning the GTA’s and other big titles from other studios aren’t coming day and date to the services and so unit sales for those games do matter. Phil knows and has alluded to there being gamers like me that while yes i sub to GP and PS+ i use those to find new games i normally wouldn’t try, but i buy my games on Xbox and PS. To your point does MS want to grow GP and get people into its ecosystem? Absolutely, but to think they don’t care about software sales numbers in any other form is just not true. I watched a lot of football this weekend and saw a lot of SF commercials. They are pushing their big AAA’s with the hope the money comes in anyway a gamer see’s fit to buy it and play it and so far it is working great. If the early access sells well for Forza in October, we are starting to see that internet catch phrases like Xbox has no games and Xbox users don’t buy games was and is all cute talk to look cool and get fake likes from comment boards. Competition is finally alive and well and this is going to be great for fans of gaming around the world. We need 2-3 major players in the space, not just one.
See @SplooshDmg...modern solutions for modern problems.
Thank You @General_Disarray
@HonestHick maybe you are right. They need to busy on selling xboxes then. Obviously a price cut was a huge win for Sony. MS needs to get on that train too. Although it must have cost Sony a great deal i suppose.

@Sil_Am yeah I agree
Microsoft are using bullying tactics and it's working
@MikeOrator happy to help, love your profile pic!
@SplooshDmg, follow your own advice.
@somnambulance ....yours are the only comments worth reading on this horribly negative, bitter salty thread. You say it all perfectly ! 👍👍❤️
@Martsmall ...summed it up !

@StrickenBiged About 20 hours in and I can say I've ran into several quests where there were multiple ways of completing an objective. But this will be more faction and side quests. Not far enough into the main story to say so.

You, My Dude, seem to be getting more and more aggravated. Is it just me or do you think that you could use some of the, how did you call it, "grass touching"? Whatever the case I think it's time for you to find you zen spot and stay there...lol...

@Tharsman @Jimboss Man i also got the totk switch (to be fair my old OLED got a scratch that was driving me crazy). and the starfield controller. Man i love that controller.
@General_Disarray
I mean, sure sometimes we get a little passionate about our hobby but why is that so bad? Sports fans get to cosplay all the time and cheer their teams in spots bars and man caves. What do we get...internet forums and Geoff Keighley and then we still get told to touch grass!!! I mean who does this person think is playing video games these days? We are not all fat nerds in their mom's basement or 13-year-olds with an unhealthy Mountain Dew obsession.
EDIT: OK...I am a fat nerd...but it's my OWN basement...and it's a GAME ROOM thank you. And I may like Mountain Dew but I'm not obsessed with it, I'm old enough to drink Red Bull...
@MikeOrator it’s bad because you’re not cheering for their favourite plastic box, you’re only cheering for yours.
I’ll cheer for the other plastic boxes when they do something I feel cheer-worthy.
Sure, Starfield is doing great things for Xbox now but it’s not a reason for me to cheer because it’s not enough for me to want to get an Xbox. I also love that since you don’t agree with the echochamber of praise, you’re salty because you can’t have it.
Hey man, throw some Jager in that red bull and now it’s a party!
@Reptilio didn’t you say on PX that you cancelled your pre-order?
@General_Disarray
OH NO...Don't get it twisted. I never wished any ill will on Starfield. We all know Xbox can use a win (PlayStation could too). It seems to be doing well and I am happy for the owners of both the platforms it's on (actually kind of wanting to get an Xbox for the game). I just don't like it when trolls pull out the standby insults just because we are having (for the most part) good clean fun arguing about our hobby.
That sounds shady.
6m players? I wonder how they measure that.
But, it makes sense game pass subscribers would download it even as a curiosity, so these numbers are certainly bloated.
Is this on steam? Concurrent players there would give a more truthful account.
I haven't seen this game blow up anywhere. Didn't even know it was out yet until today.
All i got was Asmongold on youtube laughing at how terrible it is.
I expect real sales to only be 1 or 2m. This is no doubt the smallest launch ever for a Bethesda game at retail. They can try to spin all they want. That much is clear.
@MikeOrator they most certainly did need that win. If Xbox locked down exclusivity to a new Ninja Gaiden, because the first one was (timed) exclusive, I’d buy an Xbox in a heartbeat 🤣
Honestly though, it seems to be more Xbox fans coming to PS to troll than the other way around. I read comments on PX and there’s the usual offenders here, over on there slamming Sony still, saying how terrible the fans are while coming on here to troll. It’s just sad.
@KingPev Thank you for the kind words! I love when all three platforms are having success in bringing us unique perspectives on the joy of gaming.
@General_Disarray I did had the prem upgrade for early access. Was disappointed in reviews after looking forward to it for so long, MS gave me refund and I paid for early access to BG3. Couldnt get into it (although i definitely plan to try again after SF) and picked up starfield physical day it came out. And man i'm glad I did i love it, it really is incredible
@Reptilio dude, why would you put so much stock into review scores? If you were sold on it before then, surely a few subjective numbers wouldn’t be enough to sway your opinion?
@General_Disarray No i tend to look at review scores i'm sure we've all gotten burned ignoring reviews before (now i've been burned listening to them too). in this case the mediocore ones were way off. Clearly, look at how the game has taken off. Easily my game of the year even over Zelda and i'm usually a big Zelda fan.
@somnambulance yep...I have all the current consoles plus a gaming laptop and Steam Deck. I'm not into great devs, great platforms or great publishers- I'm just into great games
@Reptilio of course we all have, no one is innocent of that. But I’m glad you decided to give it another shot if it brings you joy. Happy gaming!
@Sil_Am The industry is Ok, cause no one cares that Microsoft is buying a bunch of terrible publishers that are vastly pass their prime. Only a bunch nerd online that have never felt the touch of a woman care. If anything, the purchases have done nothing but wonders for the industry. It has put lights on some of crazy strong arming tactics that companies have been using. It also allows smaller more talented companies vastly more room to breath. Which bring me to the whole “Microsoft has the western RPG market cornered” continues to be proven false especially with the newest comparison of BG3 and Starfield… Every year more and more fantastic studio are releasing fantastic western style RPGs.

@Godot25 I don't think that narrative is going to change after one game lol. I'm just surprised they were smart enough to just buy the game if they were going to be invested for months in it anyway instead of paying a monthly subscription for that to be their main game for the rest of the year.
Just imagine a world where all gamers were platform agnostic. I love My XSS and my PS5, I love Starfield and I'm sure I'll love Spdierman 2. I feel sorry for console/PC zealots.
Judging by the reviews, starfield is exactly what people expected, fallout/Skyrim mechanics with a space setting.
Which is fine, I would have bought it if it had come out on ps5, but yeah, not buying a new console for it.
Edit : and so much for game pass offering day one access. I guess day six access doesn't sound so cool?
@AverageGamer
"cause no one cares that Microsoft is buying a bunch of terrible publishers that are vastly pass their prime"

I can't tell if I'm reading a game blog post or a doctorate dissertation written by a nobel laureate. Your beautiful prose needs to be printed in every major news paper. It is brilliant.
@Toot1st meh it bored me
@Darylb88 sometimes people can only afford one platform ,its not about preferring one over the other ,they don't want to say I cant afford it,so they attack what they don't have.
@Reptilio you was disappointed in those 7s huh
@AverageGamer jesus..take a breath
@cuttlefishjones You said No Man’s Sky and Horizon I just had to laugh. Such nonsense.
Ok so i decided to look it up out of curiosity cause i can tell MS are BS'ing with those 6m players figures.
Baldur's gate 3 hit 875k peak on steam. Currently still has 388k in the last 24h.
Baldur's gate confirmed sold 5.2m copies on steam by august 21.
Starfield has a peak of 330k and a 24h of 270k.
We are to believe it sold 6m?
No way in hell did it sell more than Baldur's gate 3.
Even adding the Xbox numbers which i expect are lower than PC. This is also Baldur's gate today vs Starfield today. I expect that a month after release the number of concurrent players will be much lower. MS is outright lying with the 6m number. Very big asterisk.
@Nem Isn't the 6 million just supposed to be players not copies sold? I thought they said they sold 2 million copies, 1 million on Pc and a million on Xbox and the other 4 million players are just GamePass subscribers playing/renting it.
@Nem it's including gamepass players I assume. While I don't know what their definition of a player is, it could just be people who've started downloading it for all we know, six million prob isn't a lie.
@Balosi Yes, the point is that whatever this definition of "players" they are using is clearly far more generous than the numbers seem to show.
I think it's a superb game. I'm around 58 hours in and the more I play it, the more I love it. The faction missions that I've played so far put main story missions from other games to shame. I may be biased though because sci-fi is my favourite genre and I love games where you can just sod off and explore and also have long dialogue with NPCs.
Good stuff, glad to see Xbox making it's mark. Sony needs some competition like this, they're as exciting as beige paint this generation.
@cburg - Why? I understand that comparing Starfield to its contemporaries is deemed as unfair by some, and, let's face it there is no comparison. Starfield doesn't even compare to Skyrim or Fallout. They are both better games. More modern ones leave it even further behind.
But why would it make you laugh? Other than the fact that they are so much better it makes the comparison absurd? And if you believe they are not, then what is it that Starfield brings to the table that makes it better in any way? Interested to know, as I haven't found anything yet in ~40 hours of playing that does.
@Darylb88 Stop making sense. Pick a side and die on a hill for it!
Also, I agree with you.
@Grimwood You may be depressed but not the millions upon millions upon millions of people who have bought Bethesda games over the years.
@Cashews I would like to see the actual numbers, it could have sold millions or tens of thousands but with the list of games in competition it doesn't give any clue, I know hogwarts has sold millions but it will have slowed down by now
@Grimwood glad my enjoyment of this game is depressing you 😂
@Cashews i honestly couldnt care less how many copies of any game is sold i play games i like, its a hobby i am not a shareholder of these corporations. The only people that care about sales are share holders and fanboys for their pissing competition
