Guitar Hero was so immensely popular that, between it and its rival Rock Band, the plastic instrument rhythm game scene collapsed, fizzling out as quickly as it took off. We haven't seen a brand new entry for about eight years. It's sort of good, because it means we don't have guitar-shaped controllers taking up space anymore. But, it's also kinda bad, because those games are awesome. Activision's CEO, Bobby Kotick, seemingly agrees, if recent comments are anything to go by.
He recently called an all-hands meeting to discuss the future of his company, which is close to being acquired by Microsoft for nearly $70 billion. The meeting goes over subjects such as Activision's journey so far, retaining company culture post-buyout, machine learning and AI, and the need to hire more writers and actors to meet player expectations.
When talking about future technology, such as VR, Elon Musk's Neuralink, and AI systems, Kotick goes on to talk about Microsoft's heavy investment in research, and how that will aid Activision in the long term. As an example, he brings up Guitar Hero, making it sound like the franchise is on its way back. "The re-emergence of Guitar Hero and other things would not be possible without the different types of resources," he said. "And so, you know, just the endless possibilities for the future that are just incredibly exciting."
As VGC points out, Kotick also mentioned Guitar Hero at a previous meeting earlier in the year, where he talked about how AI could have a "profound positive impact" on game development.
"If you take an example of a thing like Guitar Hero, I’ve always had this vision for what a new Guitar Hero product could be, but without having AI […] and then the processors embedded either in phones, in computers, or in game consoles, that allow you to actually have the speed of processing to enable that AI, we’ve never been in a place where AI is going to have practical reality and applicability for games until now," he said.
So, it's not a capital C confirmation of a new Guitar Hero, but it does seem like the series is something he's keen to bring back in some fashion.

Would love to see Guitar Hero return. Many hours were lost on Legends of Rock and World Tour.
I'd love to see this.
I still have a ps2 and ps3 pluged into the telly, the Ps3 most often for Motorstorm, but both machines remain in place so we can play Guitar hero when the mood takes us to pick up the plastic guitars..
As long as they go back to the classic goofy look and not the style of GH live and dont fill it full of pop crap id be down. Rock band still had the best soundtrack imo but i did love me some GH regardless. Bit of Muse, bit of rock, chuck in some stone roses and rolling stones and i will buy 2 copies and 100 guitars 🤔
Take my money right now.
Is it worth reporting on new Activision games going forward? It's unlikely this will come to PlayStation if it does get made.
I just play Clone Hero now, tons of songs.
Personally I never liked these games and seemed a money making scheme to sell more junk peripherals and with billions of songs, almost a never ending list of tracks they could sell you - especially with some AI way of translating the music to the GH input style to save time and staff from doing that.
With MS taking over, Koticks days as Activision CEO are over and it would be up to MS to decide whether or not to resurrect GH, decide to change any plans (especially if they haven't 'publicly' been announced) etc. So I would wait until any official confirmation once under 'new' management.
Whether we get another GH with the Peripherals or not, time will tell. Rhythm based games don't seem 'overly' common these days and in a world where plastics, environment, sustainability etc are hot topics, I don't know that they will want to ship 'large' peripherals, but I won't say it will 'never' happen as we just don't know the future...
I would be utterly amazed if this does come to fruition that it would arrive on PlayStation and once the Activision Blizzard acquisition is completed by Microsoft, it will end all releases of all AB games to the PS4/5 except Call of Duty..
Don't see any connection within Guitar Hero and AI (fortunately) but I'd love to have another Guitar Hero. Especially if it cross with Rocksmith, so I could use my bassguitar... but that plastic arcade is great. I still have 6 guitars - 3 for ps2 and 3 for ps3...
@Intr1n5ic I think this is one of those franchises that would remain multiplatform even after the acquisition.
@djlard Me neither... maybe he thinks it would help creating the tracks; having the AI analyzing the music and creating a decent gameplay track for the instrument(s)? Hopefully they'll still use humans to polish and make sure the tracks are fun to play; Harmonix were way better at knowing when to sacrifice track fidelity for gameplay than their successors at GH.
Nice of you guys to report on a potential exclusive for MS!
I rather have "Drumsmith" for PS5 and I want to be able to connect my electronic drums through midiconnection. That would be THE "music game to rule all music games" for me!!
@FuriousMachine Maybe... I play GH and RB just because of metal and it is huge difference between "human" song and "computer" song. Those computer ones are so artificial they are unlistenable.
If the buy out goes ahead, would it even come to Playstation? My guess would be no after the stunts they attempted with regulators.
Jim Ryan turned down the all games contract and decided to fight the merger, and ended up signing a COD only contract once he burned all his bridges...
Greats news for Xbox the soon to be the IP holder.
@djlard I meant the note charting, not the song itself.
Don't know why the article is on a PlayStation site it's not like it'll release there.
Rocksmith pretty much ruined Guitar Hero for me.
I wish Ubisoft would have invested more into Rocksmith and especially RS+. I'm afraid it'll die with how awful the soundtrack is.
Well with Harmonix joining epic games no chance of another rockband so won't have competition if Activision do release another guitar hero
Guitar Hero died while it was on as many platforms as they could manage.
There’s little chance that a ‘revival’ would try to limit the player pool by making it a console exclusive.
As others have noted, apart from being a likely PC/XB/Mobile Ganepass exclusive, could imagine in place of the old plastic guitar it'd be via a phone App filled with lovely mtx! Right up their live services alley!!
Do it! I need those back in my life! Please make them VR compatible so I can shred on stage in front of a giant audience!
I'm trying to make sense of Kotick's words on Guitar Hero and AI, and I can't. There seems to a giant leap in logic that isn't addressed at all. Why exactly do we need AI to create new Guitar Hero games?
I was talking to my friends the other day about how I miss this game. World tour was awful though
Yes bring it back! Would love to play it again. It would sell boatloads if done properly
Bobby seems to have missed the articles about Sony’s Sophy in Gran Turismo
The biggest issue they have now is the lag. PS3 was great, because you could plug it in the stereo and have little to no lag. The PS4 game didn't work for me because it felt so disconnected.
@__jamiie I agree. Just the development and manufacturing of new instruments would require the biggest audience available.
I have all of them on 360 but I skipped the last one on ps4.
I have a preference for Warriors of Rock so if they can take its spirit back instead of the boring realistic one, I will seriously consider diving in one more time.
@Ainu20 We don't, it will just be easier to do. You could have AI essentially make that whole game, it's just charts running along side music basically. All that's left is UI, and animation, and QA?
Easy money. You know Bobby loves that.
"Retaining company culture post buyout" is an interesting statement since it is the terrible culture he created that made the acquisition happen.
@Titntin i'd love another guitar hero game. I still have an xbox 360 (the shame i know) with the guitar hero games. The drum kit is boxed up in the loft. My mate used to play the metallica GH and i'd play along on my bass guitar..my wife thought we were nutters but gave her a chuckle 🤣
"It's sort of good, because it means we don't have guitar-shaped controllers taking up space anymore" Says you.
@Sakai Your acting like there was some magical contract out that guaranteed all ABK games on PlayStation which there wasn't.
If it weren't for Jim Ryan fighting the merger (like he was supposed too) MS wouldn't have started throwing around ten year contracts just to please everyone.
Stop been clouded over your weird hatred for a man you don't know.
@Northern_munkey Lol! Fortunately my wife is also well into it, and to tell the truth, usually better than me!
I kept my full kit for years, with my drums in the loft too, but I unfortunately gave it all away a long time back. When we started missing GH a few years back and realised they were not going to do any new ones, I bought a bunch more guitars (for PS3 and for PS2), and bought all the old games again. Most were on PS3, but GH2 on PS2 had such a classic bunch of old songs, we decided we needed that game back in our lives. If you cant scream along to 'more than feeling' whilst strutting with your tiny plastic guitar, then your just too young!
A new one would please us no end! :
@AdamNovice
Yes there was. The original contract was for COD and all other ABK games, the one that was signed only included COD. It was well reported, not sure how you missed it tbh.
"Microsoft’s original deal offer to Sony in January 2022 included keeping “all existing Activision console titles on Sony, including future versions in the Call of Duty franchise or any other current Activision franchise on Sony through December 31st, 2027.” The deal terms have clearly changed since that opening offer, with an extension to 10 years that’s limited to just Call of Duty."
I don't have a hatred for the guy, just stating a fact. Jim is a fellow Geordie and Newcastle fan actually.

@Sakai guitar hero probably wouldn't count as a 'current existing franchise' anyway, it's been inactive for a while.
Edit : though that said, guitar hero (when successful, not guaranteed) makes loads of money from peripherals, it'd prob make sense to get it out on as many forms as possible.
Who needs Pitfall, Blur, TimeShift and more.
More instruments, maybe better angle this time?
AI maybe for the scoring? Or AI voices or something? I don't get what it needs to be used for here. Other than use tech and barely have a good use for it then areas it's more suitable for.
Who knows if they are relevant games anymore (nostalgia, good advertising and so on factors to consider), they get the songs, and more of a better execution.
Just Dance requires no instruments just controllers/phone/Kinect/PS Camera (when they did not anymore for PS5/Series versions or old PS4/Xbox One versions now they stop supporting them apparently), sure you can play without the instruments but I mean most people do for Rock Band/DJ Hero/Guitar Hero, etc.
They didn't fizzle out quickly, they lasted a long time. You know who destroyed it though? Activision. Guess what though? Rock Band 4 is still going strong and has more than any new GH game could ever hope to do. Don't support the sexual predators at ActiBlizz or Microsoft.
@AdamNovice That was Microsofts intention all the time, he took Xbox 3rd party and stated numerous times all games would remain multiplatform. He wants a monopoly over the industry, and the fact he's asking the competition to sign contracts for that is further proof. Don't support the sexual predators at ActiBlizz or Microsoft. Xbox needs to die. Most anti-consumer company in gaming and responsible for everything wrong with gaming today.
Woa !!! I would definetely play a comeback guitar hero game. Since technology is so advance now i would like to see a new GH game with its own updatable playlist that would let you choose from thousands of songs to add from an engine once you reach certain points (just to make it more fun) Cutomizable guitars , customizable instruments (in case its a band game) . I think it would be awesome and now a days when everything is love for the good ol' songs that they are bringing back i believe it can be a huge success. Take my money !!!!
