A confusing Twitter post by Dragami Games president Yoshimi Yasuda has revealed that Lollipop Chainsaw RePOP, the PS5 re-release of the twee PS3 cult classic, will now be a remaster as opposed to a remake. “We have changed the game design based on your requests,” the executive bafflingly declared.
Exactly what this means for the project is honestly unclear, but we’re assuming the experience will be closer to the original than perhaps initially intended. Obviously, a remake implies a complete rebuild of an existing game – whereas remasters tend to use the existing code and overhaul the assets. Without additional context, though, it’s hard to understand what Yasuda means here.
Either way, the game’s due out in 2024 having been delayed a few months ago. Presumably the developer will reveal more about the project in the lead up to launch, and that should give us a better idea of what to expect here.

December 2023: "We have changed the game design from Remake to Remaster to Port based on your requests! The price however we did not change since you did not make any requests regarding this."
I wonder how many people are really clamouring for the return of this franchise? In an era of great female characters like Ellie from TLOU, this sort of thing seems like a step backwards but thats just my opinion.
I reckon it was always closer to remaster than remake anyways especially by todays standards.
This might also be a way to ease fans concerns about what they would change in a remake.
Doubt Lollipop Chainsaw would go down well in 2024. Completely different times now 🤷♂️.
Strange but maybe it's easier for them to get the music licenses on a Remaster as opposed to a Remake somehow? Strange thing to highlight but oh well. I assumed it was going to be more like a Remaster from the start anyway so I'm not really disappointed.
Still excited to play it again. It's such a weird gem of a game.
I remember playing this back in the day and even then finding it kinda boring. It’s got that puerile James Gunn vibe (I did enjoy GotG btw) and the soundtrack was quite good but the gameplay was repetitive, lazy and derivative. So no, definitely not a game I’m in a hurry to revisit …
@LifeGirl the game is far from serious TLOU, its literally girl wearing skimpy-ish clothing with a giant chainsaw fighting zombies.
@QuietintheCorner "The Age of Mediocrity"
That is the most accurate description of these times I've read in a while.
Remaster is fine with me. As I don't have any way to play the original, I'm eager to give the remaster a try, assuming they don't mess it up.
I presumed it would be more of a remaster then a remake. I think its now going to come down to price on release.
Like, at least be honest about it? I wouldn't have minded it. But this? Sorry, but no.
@LifeGirl Nah,you lot can keep your great female characters,like ellie and Aloy. I on the other hand am a simple guy, so I prefer playing as the hot female character instead (whether they are well written or not).
Variety is the spice of life.
A funny game, but I dont think the original gameplay was that good, a remaster ensures the gameplay stays the same, rather than punch it up to modern standards.
Avoid for me.
Bundle it with the Shadows of the Damned Remaster and il forgive you Suda
@LifeGirl TLOU is soooo boooring...
2023 is fast becoming the year of lazy, phone it in ports eh? Better to just boot a lot of these "remasters" up on original hardware or emulation and play them that way. With a GPU overclock Lollipop Chainsaw runs at a solid 30FPS on my PS3s anyway. Underrated game and surprisingly difficult in places.
@LifeGirl My opinion differs on this because I feel Ellie was a great, nuanced character in TLoU 1, and due to mediocre writing lost a lot of that in TLoU 2.
I don’t mind a remaster actually. I enjoyed the game and would like to go back to it. It’s silly and stupid, in a good way though.
I just want the opportunity to play this hidden gem on current gen. I don't mind a straight port a la Stubbs the Zombie. Anything they do to clean up the visuals are a positive to me, just please don't neuter the humor.
I do find it interesting how "remakes" such as Crash Bandicoot and Spyro can so seemingly effortlessly nail the execution, whereas a "remaster" like the GTA Definitive Collection can go catastrophically wrong.
@LifeGirl Hardly a step backwards considering Juliet predates Ellie and as @rachetmarvel said, some of us just like to see pretty girls in games. Pretty girls aside, it's a fun game as opposed to the absolute misery porn of TLoU2.
@LifeGirl My wife is one of them! This is her favorite game, and she can't wait to unlock all of the trophies again 😆
@Shigurui I haven't got round to playing TLOU2 yet, but now I've heard it described as misery porn I think I'm going to bump it up my playlist 😂
Most people here dont know the difference between a remaster and a remake anyway
@Exerion76
Same here.
@LifeGirl
Why a step backwards? There’s room for lots of different types of people in games. Sometimes you want fun rather than heavy and that’s fine.
I love Japanese devs still giving us feminine looking female characters. Most prominent ones are the FF7 women. RE too with Ada and Ashley.
I like Ellie too. But Aloy? Man...
@LifeGirl .....agreed. I played this game years ago, well some of it. It's the only time I've ever been embarrassed to be seen playing a game, or to be a gamer
@LifeGirl I thought Ellie was great in Part I but reduced to a one note shell in Part II.
Abby was way more nuanced in that game.
Plus "sexy" doesn't always equal shallow, 2B comes to mind.
I doubt this game is deep though that being said.
Removed - trolling/baiting
@LightningLeader
Completely agree. Whenever I hear remake or, especially, reboot, I get concerned. Saints Row is a prime example of how to do things wrong.
@HeeHo
Nothing deep about this game or the characters at all. It's just good, over the top fun with some fan service, and nobody should have a problem with that. Somebody doesn't like it? There's 1 billion other games to play.
@LifeGirl clearly, the average gamer is still a simple minded man. He sees an overly sexualized character, he likes
(it's a meme, btw)
Just give me at least 1440p, 60 fps, and fair price, and I'll be okay with that.
@Scottyy Dude there is nothing wrong with Aloy, she is completely fine😂. I'm not tryna attack anyone or anything, but people these days are actually insulting and taking the piss out of people who look completely normal. And yes I say people, because Aloy's model is based on an actual human being, so when people say Aloy's ugly it seems like they're also indirectly insulting the person they modeled Aloy on.
I love my anime girls just as much as the next person, but coming to the conclusion that certain female characters aren't good looking just because they're not super sexed up unachievable levels of beauty is just silly.
Remember when people were complaining about Aloy having a beard, when in actuality it was just some peach fuzz? 😂
@homelesscretin
You know what I hate in this conversation? Acting like we all wait for some super model. I said I liked Ellie too. Is she a beauty with a great sexy look? Hell no! But she is just fine.
I know Aloy has a face model but I can also notice they didn't just copy&paste her face and instead made changes here and there so in a way it's not the face model's face is ugly or something. It's that they made it uglier, she was just a regular person as herself.
It happened with Cassandra in ACOdyysey or Dina in Part II etc. I once again stress this so that you guys can understand:
We don't expect porn stars or Hollywood beautys. We just want woman who are not delibaretly made uglier with the sick idea of "Woman who looks feminine are disgrace to empowerment". That's my final thoughts and in a way thank you too: I wanted to say these for a long time and you gave me a reason.
@Scottyy they want the big farting ballerina broad so modern gals can “relate”
The remake content changes to undertaking to remake it, to just visual enhancements.
I mean fan base or dev work should have been clear regardless of who is doing it and such and undertaking.
I was interested it in regardless as from old reviews I'm like yep it's a hack n slash, it's got a crazy story and fun dialogue/situations/themes, I'm in. I like fun games not always serious this and that.
But I don't deny if music/other elements to change sure.
If remastering to change dialogue/change visual stuff to censor (blood, other details) due to rating changes or platform holders PS/Xbox say so, whatever the case.
That and the artstyle/whatever else could have been better/worse who knows I have forgotten what they were presenting before. Then again a remaster is less effort for them to work on budget wise hopefully then just engine changes, reworking many things and more.
I would hope for a PS4 version but I doubt it. Sad No More Heroes is PS5, while sure new console this and that and should move on would prefer a last gen version but as it ran well on Switch clearly unlikely, let alone what the PS5 version runs as. Or what their goal was and if current gen needed to be then sure.
It's just I never saw the Switch version physical only PS5. The reverse of other games where I see the Switch versions but not the Xbox/PS versions. I have all platforms but still it's just weird whether new, old, cheap/discounted or higher prices (full or less base price) what availability I see of some games.
@LifeGirl Ewww… you used Elie from The Last Of Us as an example of good female representation in games? A LOT of people have been clambering for a remake/remaster of this game, things just don’t happen in the video game industry if there’s no demand for it. Lollipops Chainsaw is a beloved cult classic by the people who’ve played it, if nobody liked the game or it didn’t sell well in the first place, you wouldn’t be seeing a remaster of it.
Plus not every female character in a game has to be unattractive, non-feminine, masculine, ugly etc. Some of them like Juliet are allowed to be sexy and attractive, there’s nothing wrong with that. Your mindset on conventionally attractive women in games is quite regressive.
@rachetmarvel Amen! Those guys can keep their ugly, masculine, unappealing female characters like Elie or Aloy, i on the other hand prefer to play as attractive women in games. This is an escapism medium, why are people trying to put constraints on what types of portrayals of fictional female characters are fine?
@djlard It’s so damn overrated, people only really like it because of the story, the gameplay is so forgettable and cookie cutter….
