Cosmic horror Quantum Error, one of the first games announced for the PS5, will officially launch later this week on 3rd November – but developer TeamKill Media won’t be sweating its day one sales too much. That’s because, according to a post on the game’s official Twitter account, the project has already broken even on pre-orders alone.
“We want to give everyone who has pre-ordered Quantum Error the biggest thank you and hug ever,” a spokesperson for the studio said. “As of last night, we have made back our budget we put into the game over its development time on digital pre-orders alone. All of you are the best and we can’t wait for you to play Quantum Error!”
Obviously, game development is a risky business, especially for smaller studios like TeamKill Media, where a single flop could tank an entire company. So, it’s good seeing a success story like this, where a title has made back its entire budget prior to release – and any subsequent sales now will represent pure profit for the team.

I wonder how much that budget was if they could break even on pre-orders alone. Anyway, best of luck to the developer and the game.
Digital pre-orders... a strategy to relegate investment risk unto the consumer.
Still, I hope the game turns out good and that this small team can continue working on new ideas.
Well that's pretty dumb.
Ive liked the look of this game and will be getting it down the line. It was also available on physical preorder so im assuming that helped too
Digital is the way to go as always.
You know what probably also helped this? The fact that they (Teamkill Media) posted constant updates with roadmaps and hitting their progress checkpoints. That helped show backers that it's real and in return, invested in their game. Cheers to them!

That phenomenon - breaking even during preorder - is anything but new. It led to change in game design and development strategy and incentivised publishers to move money from development to marketing.
That's why I don't preorder. If I'm going to buy anyway, I do that on day one. The stock will not run out.
@TRC it took a double-take for me to realize that the link you posted was a link to the service formerly known as Twitter.
This has no relevance to the article, though it was fascinating to realize that even I don’t recognize that service anymore, especially since I follow tech news every day.
The reviews.. ouch.
@Darylb88 honest question - what reviews (of the finished product), if it isn’t even out yet?
@XanderTigerclaw You only need to have a quick look on Metacritic to see, it's being roasted as one of the worst games of the year.
