Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is doing incredibly well in terms of critic review scores. With the review embargo having lifted earlier today (the 16th October at the time of writing), the PS5 exclusive currently sits at a hugely impressive 91 on Metacritic, based on a whopping 120 reviews. As the headline states, that score puts it amongst the highest rated games of 2023.
Across all platforms, a 91 pushes the superhero sequel into 12th place for the year so far — but it's topped by a bunch of titles that don't have anywhere near the same number of reviews to draw from. Only the likes of Street Fighter 6, Resident Evil 4, Baldur's Gate 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are on a similar level.
On PS5 specifically, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is the sixth highest rated game of 2023. Here's how that list looks:
- Baldur's Gate 3 - 96 (34 reviews)
- Resident Evil 4 - 93 (131 reviews)
- Tetris Effect: Connected - 93 (8 reviews)
- Street Fighter 6 - 92 (98 reviews)
- Cocoon - 92 (9 reviews)
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2 - 91 (120 reviews)
For comparison's sake, the first Marvel's Spider-Man on PS4 has an 87 based on 129 reviews — an already stellar score — so this will be seen as a real achievement for developer Insomniac Games.
Did you expect Marvel's Spider-Man 2 to score so highly? Or has it reached beyond even what you had imagined? Don't stop swinging between skyscrapers in the comments section below.

2023 is going to be one of those years we look back on. So many good games, so little time.
Something is in the water at Insomniac. They never miss and put out a banger every two years
@SolarSailor While I am hoping Wolverine is good I'm also hoping that this is where they take a break from Marvel IPs and actually work on something new.
Glad to see it getting a good score, Insomniac really are elite level devs.
That seems more inline with what I would expect from Insomniac. They really are a talented bunch.
Polygon, Kotaku and Eurogamer all said the game was great. That's what really blows my mind.
I just checked the metacritic. It's from 122 reviews! Fantastic work Insomniac. I think it's their 1st time to have a game scored above 90% 👏👏👏👏 can't wait for the Wolworine one
Never doubted them.
I am sure it is well deserved. Games with less than 10 reviews should not be counted. But why these games are only reviewed by a few? To be fair, never heard of these games. Tetris effect is a new game? Unrelated, My Hero Ultra Rumble should be reviewed. Been playing since the weekend, it is quite a refined game but as usual, includes grinding being a free-to-play game. But you review the Honkai game (also free to play), and MHUR is based on a well-known IP. But very few media have reviewed this surprisingly.
91 out of 120 reviews is really impressive. Maybe I should give the first a chance. After the joy I had with Arkham City being forgettable after beating it back then, I just couldn't bother with superhero games no more.
@Enuo Eurogamer said a AAA game which isn’t in 2D and about being as much of a weirdo as possible on this earth was great? Did someone feed them coca leaves for breakfast?
N.i.c.e. 🕷 spiderman 2 is definitely gonna be there for game of the year for the video game award.good job insomniac.queens new york represent.word up son
I didn't expect it to crack into the 90s for sure. I was expecting around where the original landed but happy to it's doing well for itself. Looking forward to playing it and Sonic together!
Have a feeling Baldur’s Gate 3 (96 with 131 total reviews on OpenCritic) or Tears of the Kingdom (96 reviews with 151 reviews on OpenCritic) will be taking home most GoTY prizes, but this will probably at least be nominated.
Oh dang, it's actually sitting at a higher score on MC then the first game? That's really neat!
Insomniac doesn't miss!
91 metacritic
91 opencritic
Universal acclaim.
And 8's 9's and 10's
Across the board.
And thats what actually investing in your teams and products does
And yet people told me it would never score higher than mid 80's. Looks like it's a game of the year contender after all.
Having not played Spider-Man 2 yet of course.
Out of all those titles I would put RE4 remake first for now and then only Spider-Man 2 second or the new first once played.
This is of course for PS5 only.
@UltimateOtaku91 Its maybe a contender for Bronze but Baldur's Gate 3 and Zelda will be sweeping the GOTY awards i feel.
@DennisReynolds Yeah I think so too, Nintendo and Sony have already won some so I'm hoping Baldurs Gate 3 takes home the main awards as their team deserves the credit.
I would take the Street Fighter 6 W here already, but I gotta give a bigger W to Tetris Effect taking a top 3 spot. That's the power of how great Tetris Effect is
street fighter 6 was rated by casuals if it’s rated that high
Great to see insomniac get a 90+ game on metacritic haven't got one in a while and deserve it. Lets hope the few reviews that come in late don't drag the score just below 90.
@Ben7982 It might happen. Click-baiter publications rarely get pre-release codes and thrive on giving games scores in the 50s.
Obviously reviews are just reviews, but this is a very impressive score. It’s surely higher than Sony may have been expecting considering it is a familiar (but still improved!) sequel.
@Tharsman tell me about it metacritic really need to do something against those types of reviews. I've come to accept a metacritic score will likely go down by 1 (at minimum) a couple of days post release.
@Totheteeth Eurogamer have repented - changed their ways, they realized hating on AAA games just wasn't worth it anymore.
Cocoon and Tetris shouldnt be on the list with such low review counts.
I appreciate the consideration of AMOUNT of reviews this time around. Everyone's reaction to Baldur's Gate 3's metacritic score when it was floating around a dozen reviews irked me to no end.
Nothing else to say... Cocoon kinda sucked — sorry, just had to get that off my chest.
baring spiderman 2 the only one out of that top 6 that i enjoyed was resident evil 4 remake
Watch the Xbox fanboys try and review bomb the game. They tried and failed with both Horizon FW and God Of War Ragnarok.
@nomither6 sf6 is a really great fighting game though.
@DennisReynolds BotW and BG3 will likely win the most awards but GOTY is a subjective thing and those games, especially BG3, may not appeal to all. Spider-man 2 and others will still win a few.
@themightyant Sure but i expect with stuff like the Game Awards or Joysticks its either Zelda or BG3.
Lmao push square looking real funny now with their low score, extremely tough for a so called" iterative sequel" like spiderman 2 to get a 91 on Metacritic, just shows you that they must have done something right.
Well deserved on the scores.
@PixelDragon And it's funny how they dropped scores feeling like they're special, now they're back to scores hiding behind stars. That site only got popular with their PS3/360/PC comparisons back in the day which morphed into DF, that's it.
@Nepp67 I absolutely agree. I think they should have one team work on Spiderman and one on original IP
I never had a doubt. Cant wait.
Games, games and more game... and not only great games but also look beautiful thanks to great hardware.
Goes to show that zero excuse not to have both.
I’m READY TO PLAAAAAAAAAY 🕷️
I know this is about Spider-Man 2 but man, I gotta shout out Tetris Effect on PSVR2. Not only is it my most played game on PSVR2; it is my most played game in 2023 period.
Tetris Effect on PSVR2 is really one of those gaming experiences that go beyond the traditional idea of what a videogame can entail. Only people that have experienced it can have a full grasp of what I'm trying to convey here. It's a must play.
