If you're looking forward to The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria, good news: you get to look forward to it for longer! Yes, the co-op survival game set in Tolkien's ever-popular fantasy world has been delayed, though only on PS5.
Developer North Beach Games shared the following statement on social media today, announcing a delay to 5th December, 2023:
The PlayStation 5 version of The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria will now launch both digitally and physically at retail on December 5th, 2023," it reads. "We are taking this additional time to improve various aspects of the PS5 version, and to ensure we can deliver the highest possible quality for PlayStation 5 games."
The team goes on to apologise for the delay and thanks everyone for their "ongoing support and patience".
Return to Moria is a game in which you play as dwarves heading back to, well, Moria. Playing solo or with three others in online co-op, you'll delve into the depths to find treasure and build yourselves and your equipment up for future expeditions. Procedurally generated stages mean it won't ever be quite the same journey, and Gimli will make an appearance, portrayed by none other than John Rhys-Davies.
The game will be launching later this month on PC, but if you're planning to play it on PS5, you'll need to wait a few extra weeks.

Good. A delayed game is always better than a failed game.
I love LotR but the games always feel pretty cheap (even the ones that have large budgets like Shadow or Mordor), and like cash-ins that are just using the brand to sell a game that wouldn't have any attention otherwise. I think partly because the books are so revered (including by me) and went so long without any crass commercialisation and licensing deals attached, so it feels kind of like if the next Happy Meal toys were based on Hamlet or The Merchant of Venice.
@SovietTaters Not applying this to this game in particular but sometimes the biggest failures are the very delayed games, like Colonial Marines and Duke Nukem Forever. And some of the best games are frankly rushed out, like Majora's Mask. Some things are just bad, some things are just good. It's like if there's a rancid fart in an airtight jar - whenever you release it, it's gonna stink.
It looks dreadful. I dont know what's going on with these LOTR games but I'd love to see a proper high-budget project in the vein of Hogwarts Legacy
@Matroska Shadow of Moria was fantastic for its time and had some interesting and fresh mechanics. I felt like Shadow of War was a step in the wrong direction and I remember it feeling more unpolished.
The old Two Towers and Return of the King games were pretty well made co-op action games as well.
Is this going to be as good as the Gollum or the ’King’ Kong game?
@captainsandman Shadow of Moria sounds cool - imagine Talion traveling through enormous caves and giant halls of Khazad-dûm. Hope one day we'll see this title, too
Jokes aside Shadow of War was better in almost every aspect except the amount of grind if you wish to complete and max out all the possible things. It became too repetitive mid- / late-game.
