Despite solid competition from another major new release, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has made a number one debut on the UK's physical games chart. It trumped Nintendo's Super Mario Bros. Wonder, "comfortably" selling the most boxed copies in the country. We imagine both games will remain in the top 10 for a while. We've yet to see digital sales data for Spidey, but presumably, the majority of sales will come from PS Store.
Anyway, the rest of the physical chart is mainly business as usual. EA Sports FC 24 is forced to number three thanks to the pair of juggernauts above it. Another new release, Sonic Superstars, manages a fourth place debut, while Assassin's Creed Mirage dips from second to fifth. Moving down a spot is Red Dead Redemption in seventh, while Hogwarts Legacy moves up a place to eighth.
Here's the latest top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 21st October, 2023
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- EA Sports FC 24
- Sonic Superstars
- Assassin's Creed Mirage
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Red Dead Redemption
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Minecraft (Switch)
- Nintendo Switch Sports

There's 3 times the amount of Switches out there and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 still outsold Mario? Crazy. Spider-Man 2 is a juggernaut.
Few other stats: "Spider-Man 2 is comfortably No.1 in the UK physical charts this week. It’s the 4th biggest UK boxed launch of the year, behind Zelda, EA Sports FC and Hogwarts Legacy.
Physical launch sales are 20% lower than what God of War Ragnarok managed last year. Digital data still to come.
Physical launch sales of Spider-Man 2 is significantly down on Spider-Man 1. But digital acceleration since 2018 means it isn’t possible to draw any conclusions until the download data is in."
@JAMes-BroWWWn @GreatKwyjibo "In the UK, Super Mario Bros Wonder is the third biggest launch for a Mario platformer in chart history. It is only very narrowly behind Super Mario Odyssey and Super Mario 3D All-Stars. I imagine with digital, it may well be the biggest Mario platform game launch in the UK ever"

@themightyant Its crazy how much fomo/***** limited release sold 3D All-stars
Well done Insomniac! I don't think selling less physical copies at launch than spiderman 1 is a problem as the install base was much larger on the ps4. I would have expected that
Sony marketing, never doubt it’s ability to sell a game.
@Powerplay94 Yes it would have included PS4.
@MagisterMagi Perhaps somewhat. But Mario 3D All-Stars was also three really fantastic Mario games in one package for £50. That was always going to sell like hot-cakes. I agree the time limited stuff was BS, as was not including Galaxy 2! But it was an excellent package all round.
Weirdly, FC24 still sits at number one in the UK on the PS Store, with Spidey at 2. And it never reached the #1 spot during the pre order phase either.
Surely a game like this can knock EA off for one week, come on. Very disappointed in UK PS5 owners 😅
@Ravix PS Store is digital, this is physical. FIFA / EA Football is almost unbeatable here.
I think Spiderman 2 will be top for a couple of weeks but overall Mario Wonder will end up staying in the charts for longer. Sonys games usually have insane launch week numbers but don't have the legs that Nintendo games have.
Curious to hear the overall sales numbers after one week.
I am going to guess its between 7 - 10 Million units sold.
@themightyant yes, where it is sadly number 2 on the top 10 list... I'm just disappointed it hasn't claimed #1 on both, especially as digital is more prominent now.
Mario wonder will be number one next week and stay there for absolutely ages. It is an amazing game and I’m playing it over Spider-Man 2 at the moment, it is just so good.
@Ravix I really don't care whether it's #1 or #10 as long as it's a success and they can keep making games they want to. And all metrics point to it being a big success. That's great imo.
@themightyant It's just a throwaway comment about being disappointed in UK gamers 😁😁 we must be better in future.
@Styledvinny79 I’m hoping Alan Wake 2 gets a #1 launch next week, but Mario Wonder topping wouldn’t make me cry. I played through it this weekend and it’s such a pure gaming experience. Absolutely loved it. In my own, year end list, I’m really contemplating, “Do I put Tears or Wonder in the #2 spot?” Rarely these days is there a game where you can say, “I don’t know what’s going to happen” and mean it in the same capacity as Wonder. I’d love to see it get some GotY accolades this year.
@Ravix I gave up on being disappointed by the masses taste in video games a long time ago.
No but seriously mario kart is consistently in the top 10 it's pushing nearly 60 million in sales who's still buying this game
@Drago201 Every single kid who is new to gaming and buying a Switch. New gamers are born every day, young and old.
Well deserved. Spider-Man 2 was an absolute blast. I was completely addicted all weekend long with it.
Also good for Sonic Superstars. As expected it didn't get buried by the competition as many people thought it would. Great game as well.
@themightyant I know but damn thats still alot 😕 😳
Well deserved! The best game for me for this year!
I wish i had got Spiderman to be honest. It was a choice between this and Mario and i told my wife a few weeks ago that Mario would be good to play together so i decided to stick with it. When i was in the cue i was still thinking i would rather be playing Spiderman tho but disnt have the heart to tell her that otherwise ahe would have made me get it instead of Mario lol.
Spiderman wins the sprint but Mario will win the long distance event. Mario will sell better once Santa starts filling his sack.
@UltimateOtaku91 True, though Spidey is like the only evergreen game that Sony owns. Remember Miles Morales and the initially disappointing sales? It ended up outselling most ps5 games because it had staying power.
@Drago201 they haven’t made a new mario kart in over 10 years , it’s all we got .
@themightyant
Like my son with his SM2 there will be thousands of them traded into CEX etc by the end of this week to recover initial purchase cost.
And those on here tell me Sony would not prefer an all digital market, they most definitely would.
Finished it this morning. Really enjoyed it but i prefer the first game and it does feel pretty unfinished in some areas and rushed. Solid 8.5 from me though.
@Powerplay94 Ah, very good point. Darn. That sort of sucks, as I wanted to see how well it competed in the charts. Rooting for Mario now instead!
Mario Wonder has to be one of the best games I've ever played, having literally reminded me why I enjoy video games in the first place. I think it's generation- defining, honestly, which I never expected out of a 2D Mario game since at least 1995, when I wasn't even alive yet. Congrats to Spidey and Insomniac, but Wonder is the winner here for me.
Glad to say I contributed to both Spiderman 2 and Mario Wonder sales 🙂
Not surprised. It is a fantastic game.
Narrative, characters, world, gameplay, voice acting, soundtrack... it is all in the package. They did a great job.
FF16, Starfield, Phantom Liberty, Baldur's Gate 3, SM2. These are the digital experiences that keep me in gaming. At this point, mindlessly running forward in a Crayola 2D world and jumping to collect stuff is simply not enough.
Patiently waiting for every one to finish it and trade it in, so I can pick it up cheaper. Or until it drops in price. Which ever first, I can wait.... I think
Hogwarts Legacy is like the new GTA 5, it is always in the top 10 pretty much every single week. Easily the best selling game of this year. It had already cleared nearly 20 million units in early MAY.
@OldGamer999 Why would Sony care if gamers traded in SM2? They already got the money for it. Sony doesn't payback money to Gamestop if a disc is traded in. Also, it's likely that the vast majority of sales were digital. Your comment seems to only exist to troll.
@theSpectre
Because when a game is traded in and then sold again Sony make no money from the traded game sale.
But if it was digital only from the Sony store front people could not be able to buy that second hand traded in game and would have to buy new digital from Sony.
The same goes for Xbox as well.
@theSpectre
Also Sony and Microsoft don’t have to make a disc or a box or pay a certain amount of the sale money to a shop.
If it’s digital on the store front costs are less but the game is still sold at full price.
Therefore making the Sony or Microsoft more money.
@theSpectre
And if you can’t work that simple economics out you must be replying just to troll.
@OldGamer999 I don't think used game sales are as much of a problem anymore especially as the majority of sales are digital. This game is going to sell massively and the minimal used games sales are not going to hurt it.
Mario & Fifa are really tough competition but I'm glad it is doing well.
