Sony and Nintendo both have a big, fancy exclusive game at the top of the UK's physical games chart, and they've just swapped seats. Both Marvel's Spider-Man 2 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder launched on 20th October, and the superhero epic swung in with a debut at number one. Now, though, it's Nintendo's imaginative platformer on top. All new releases see a dip in physical sales after launch, but we imagine these two titans will be in the top 10 for several more weeks as the holidays approach.
Elsewhere, Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 snuck into fourth for its debut, with almost three quarters of those physical sales being for the PS5 version. EA Sports FC 24 holds firm in third, and Assassin's Creed Mirage also holds its place in fifth. Another new release, EA Sports UFC 5, appears at number seven, just ahead of Hogwarts Legacy in eighth.
Here's the latest physical top 10 in full.
UK Sales Charts: Week Ending 28th October, 2023
- Super Mario Bros. Wonder
- Marvel's Spider-Man 2
- EA Sports FC 24
- Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1
- Assassin's Creed Mirage
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- EA Sports UFC 5
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Nintendo Switch Sports
- Minecraft (Switch)

Until next week when well inevitably see CoD at no1 right up till easter 😒🙂
Only 1 week at the top for Spiderman 2 is suprising as its a long established hugely popular IP that has reach even beyond gaming. For that reason I did not expect the sales drop off to be as large as it was
@Sakai It only fell to number 2 behind arguably an even bigger IP in Mario that had a hugely popular movie release earlier this year, so also has a reach beyond gaming. Its hard to tell without the exact numbers but I really doubt that spiderman has had a large sales drop off.
@Sakai I think you shouldn't underestimate the selling power of a new 2D Mario game for a console with an install base of about thrice the size and a target group of both hardcore and casual fans alike.
I think next week will remain the same top 2 with WarioWare rounding out the top 3. Then inevitably CoD takes over the following week but like Diablo 4, I think it'll slow down faster than usual as people expect it on Game Pass (we may see Super Mario RPG take the #1 spot later in November as a result for example).
@Sakai In gaming Mario is bigger then Spidey and Mario hype this year is huge thanks to the film.
@SleepyNick 69% sales drop according to the figures released.
My pre launch prediction was #1 until COD releases
@Sakai you have to take into account the different install bases. This isn't surprising.
@Sakai See, I don't really know if a 69% drop is bad. If spidey sold like 2.5 million units in the first weekend then selling 30% of that in the next weekend is fine isn't it? This is why the Japanese charts are better, you can see the actual number of units sold it tells a much clearer story.
As for the number 1 spot it would have been tough to predict it. Spiderman and Mario are both massive.
Edit - and as others have mentioned the Switch install base is bigger. Mario is also cheaper. You could get it for half the price of spidey if you shop around.
@SleepyNick you could be correct, and maybe it will have long sales legs, but I always expect Mario titles to have the longest legs. Some of their evergreen titles seem to stick around in the charts forever, and deservedly so
It doesn’t help that shops like CEX now have the traded in stock from those that have completed the game and got some money back.
When CEX sell a game of course it’s not counted as its second hand sales. Plus Sony get zero money for the second hand sale as well.
@OldGamer999 Spider-man 2 is £65 at CEX. You can get it cheaper brand new! e.g. I paid less at launch, and it's £55.96 at The Game Collection with 20% off code SPOOKY20
That said I did trade in my copy to CEX for £47.
@Sakai it was a short game most people probably completed by now and hype has dropped
Surprised that Hogwarts legacy is going so well
I am guessing Spiderman made more money though.
Keeping my copy of Spidey2 for potential story expansion dlc and new game plus. Mario Wonder about 10 hours to finish main and about 18+ hours for 100%. Spiderman 2 takes about 15 hours to finish story and about 25+ hours to 100% platinum. Perfectly fine for Mario Wonder to not be a 70 to 100+ hour game but not for Spidey2, weird hypocrisy
@themightyant
I see you joined the trade in gang 😂
Another week, another Top 10 for Hogwarts Legacy. That, I like.
@themightyant this is why im trying to rush the plat since completing the campaign yesterday. I see it was 47 cash trade in and thought i wouldnt mind that 😂😂
I’d imagine that word of mouth has somewhat influenced this, as Super Mario Wonder has had such a positive reaction post-release whereas Spider-Man 2 had the big hype and then a lot of the discourse on the game now is, while largely positive, also somewhat variable. I expect Wonder will outsell Spider-Man 2 in the grand scheme of things.
Both amazing games, but as some like to hate on Nintendo. It shows how strong they are, never underestimate Nintendo and the power of there IPs.
How far did Sonic Superstars plummet?
@Deoxyr1bose 15th, Nintendo Life reports on the top 40:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2023/10/uk-charts-mario-wonder-jumps-ahead-of-spider-man-2-and-takes-the-top-spot
No digital just physical boxed sales and it's from one country. As always need a worldwide chart that includes both physical and digital. I wouldn't be surprised to see Mario Wonder have slightly more sales total given that almost 100 million more Switch in comparison to PS5. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 doesn't matter what position Spiderman 2 is in, it'll do amazing numbers regardless. Both previous Insomniac Spiderman games did 33 million total as of last year?
@SleepyNick I think a lot of people went straight in on Spider-man knowing what it will be. Where as 2D Mario maybe people needed more convincing, so once they’d seen the positive reviews maybe they got a bit of a bump in week 2.
@OldGamer999 Joined? I've been trading most games since the 80s. Second hand is an important part of the retail economy, I often wouldn't buy games Day 1 without it.
For Spider-man 2 specifically I suspect I will want to replay it some point. At which point I will either rebuy it at retail, digitally on a sale, or when it inevitably hits PS+. But I had my fill for now. Brilliant game.
@Kidfunkadelic83 I wouldn't worry too much it will likely only drop £5 or £10 if you wait another few days or weeks.
@themightyant
Me to games and consoles
@OldGamer999 Traded in and bought my PS3 with a lot of traded in games and tech from CEX. Long time fan, despite all the crap people give it online.
I kinda get it their day 1 / early BUY prices are really bad, but for older games, or SELL prices the value is usually great.
@themightyant im guessing it will drop pretty soon as i imagine they will start getting flooded with used copies.
It's a new 2D Mario game. It'll still be haunting the top ten years from now when Sony has to flog Spider-Man 2: Game of the Year Edition for $20 to generate any interest in it.
Both successful games, and both supposedly fantastic, but Nintendo's bigger titles have a unique position in the market compared to first-party offerings from other manufacturers.
Sad at some of the comments! This a huge victory for us! Massive AAA, single player, story driven exclusives trading top spots is awesome!
@The_Pixel_King It seems to be a deal on their ebay outlet store try this link The Game Collection. Deal is hot on hotukdeals and it says it expires at midnight.
Just finished the Story content in SM2 over the weekend. Fantastic game.
Even the art in the credits are amazing. Its like they took every chance to show off their talent.
@Sakai people just don’t have the cash for 15 hours of gameplay when so many games being released. Tons of people are sitting on the sideline.
@Sakai keep in mind that these are boxed charts too. It might have sold more digital
